Far outdistancing all others, Tom and Jerry was voted the favorite cartoon show in a survey of children conducted for Cartoon Network India and released Tuesday.
Turner Entertainment Networks, which includes CNN, Cartoon Network and Pogo, surveyed 3,206 children aged seven to 14. The poll was conducted in May and June in 14 cities across India, including New Delhi, Ludhiana, Guwahati, Ahmedabad, Mumbai (Bombay), Nasik, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Cochin.
Asked to name the top 10 cartoons of the year, kids were quick to include Tom and Jerry on their lists. It was named by 77% of children (75% of girls and 79% of boys).
Pokemon was second with 36% (43% of girls and 28% of boys). Third place went to Popeye, with 30% of children (20% of boys and 31% of girls) listing it.
Asked about their favorite type of show, cartoons were clearly in front, with 84% of children choosing them. Sports came in second with 36% of votes, and comedy series were third with 30%.
Cartoon Network had 54% of children voting for it as their favorite channel. Star Plus came in second with 13%.
A surprise third was Pogo, a children's channel, with 9% of votes. It only started broadcasting in January this year.
"The findings from the survey were quite interesting, and would be useful in shaping our channel's shows in the coming months," said Duncan Morris, vice-president for research at Turner Entertainment Networks Asia Pacific. "So far, most of the surveys conducted were for older children above the age of 14 and elders. This survey has helped us gauge the interests of our young audience better."
