Boomerang UK have been digging deep in the archives a bit lately.

Starting with early Daffys, Bugs and Porkys they have now moved to Sylvester.

One cartoon features Porky Pig with 4 cats one of which talked like Sylvester but had a black nose.

In the cartoon called Tweety-Pie, a Sylvester like cat had the more common red nose and was called Thomas.

Then in a cartoon featuring Elmer Fudd and Hobo the Flea, Elmers dog was called Sylvester.

In Tom and Jerry, Tom was first called Tom in The Midnight Snack after being called Jasper in Puss Gets The Boot.

So in which cartoon was Sylvester the Cat first called Sylvester.

Don't know.... Sylvester wasn't called by name in his cartoons very often. If I had to guess (and I do) I'd say the 1948 Porky/Sylvester short Scaredy Cat (one of Chuck Jones' only handlings of the character).

Yes, Sylvester was identified by name for the first time in SCAREDY CAT. The name was on a 1947 modelsheet as well.

And Thad, with the approximate average from storyboard to release at that point running at 18 plus months that would put the naming of Sylvester back to at least mid-1946! :) That's not too darn long after his "birth";)
