Personally, I think that both characters are over rated.

So do I, but I wanted to know who everybody prefferred. They are probably the most famous of the Looney Tunes characters who didn't appea in many classic cartoons.

I prefer Marvin because most of the cartoons that he is in are different.
The Taz cartoons with Bugs are all roughly the same plot.

I liked Marvin better, Taz is close though.
Marvin has some shade of character development, but Taz doesn't.
I don't think the characters are overrated though. You might as well say Bugs is overrated for appearing in so many cartoons.:p

Marvin is probably my favourite supporting character just 'coz of the graphic design - he's just so space retro.
Taz is okay, though I thought Tazmania was a good use of the character and a reasonable show considering it's target audience. I especially liked the idea that his wild slobbering was completely incidental to him being a Tazmanian Devil (an idea probably knicked from Duck Tales where Donald's croaky voice was potrayed as some sort of speech defect).

I agree with this. Even Ducking the Devil, with Daffy instead of Bugs, is basically the same, only with Taz preferring wild duck instead of rabbits. At least Daffy's encounter with marvin the martian, in Duck Dogers, was more original (Bugs was never sent to space as a space hero). I think that Dr. devil and Mr. Hare is the most different of the Tazmanian Devil cartoons.
Out of the Marvin cartoons, I do think that The Hasty Hare, Hare-way to the Stars, and Duck Doger all had similarites to Hare-Devil Hare.
Here are the similarites:
The Hasty Hare: The only other classic cartoon with k-9 (okay, not that much similar).
Hare-Way to the Stars: Bugs get's sent to another planet (though this time by accident) and marvin plans on blowing up the earth because it ruins his view of another planet.
Duck Dogers: Both cartoons end with most of a planet being blown up, with marvin and one other character hanging onto the bottom of that planet.
You could also say that Mad as a Mars Hare is similar to Hare-Devil Hare because both cartoons involve Bugs reluctantly being sent to another planet.

The cartoons featuring Marvin the Martian are better than the ones that feature the Tazmanian Devil. Taz is a fun character but the few cartoons he is in suffer from weak direction and tight budgets. Marvin was lucky enough to star in cartoons in the late forties when the studio was at its peak. (So I guess you can surmise that I vote for Marvin.)

Marvin the Martian, I like the "space themed" cartoon shorts that he is in.
My vote would have to be Marvin. He is turning out to be a more versatile character these days with his on going role in "Duck Dodgers". (Is that show cancelled now?) K-9 needs a lot more screen time though....
Granted, "Taz-Mania" gave me plenty of chuckles back in the day, even more then "Dodgers", but Taz just seem to have one motivation throughout his career, "Must Eat Everything!" (Is that show comin' to DVD? I'd buy it! Promise!)
The "Man From M.A.R.S." cartoon from "Taz-Mania" was a great short because it had both characters starring together for the first and only time ...

They were both featured prominently in the video game Taz: Escape From Mars (Taz was the character you play as, marvin was the main boss).

I agree, overrated.
But than I'm not so much a fan of the 50's LT entries with few exception. I prefer the earlier films/incarnations of the classic characters.
If I had to chose, I'd definitely go with Marvin over Taz who is a completely one-dimensional character. At least MtM's cartoons provide an original backdrop for the stories to play out. Taz is the embodiment of a billion other generic cartoon characters, only with less distinction or depth.

I definatley prefer Marvin the Martian, I think Taz is overrated, I never really liked him or understood what was so great about him.
