Have you guys seen this site? The Library of Congress' website has a collection of early American animation. It has 23 examples you can download in various formats.

Go here http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/oahtml/oahome.html and choose Browse by Chronological Title list.

There's lots of other great stuff in their collection as well, including film of San Francisco in 1906 ( http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/papr/sfhome.html ), Theodore Roosevelt ( http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/collections/troosevelt_film/trffilm.html ) and early films of New York ( http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/S?ammem/papr:@FIELD(COLLID+newyork) ) among other things. Enjoy.

While the LOC produced a VHS collection of some of these silent cartoons, the transfers were inconsistent. The worst were the KRAYZ KAT and Rauol Barre cartoons, where were very blurred. I paid to have all of the Krazy Kats re-transferred to a Broadcast standard Master three years ago. And while the prints appear to suffer from shrinkage, my transfer which was used in the production of GEORGE HERRIMAN'S KRAZY KAT KARTOON KLASSICS
was an improvement.
