So which of the three Bugs/Cecil cartoons is your favorite?
I voted for Rabbit Transit because it ultimately had the most creative set-up and best gags (especially the ending).

I will also go with TORTISE WINS BY A HARE as my favorite (even though I enjoy all three of them), particularly for Clampett's wild gags.:bugs2:
I love the ending.

I like Tortose Wins by a Hare the best. It was the first cecil Turtle cartoon I ever saw. It also seems to have the most classic quality out of the three. This one should have been nominated for an oscar.

Tortoise Wins By A Hare would definitely be second on my list. And hey, good to see WB respecting their past by actually including a clip from Tortoise Beats Hare at the beginning of the cartoon.
And as for TBH, pretty good cartoon (considering the fact that it's one of the first Bugs shorts). Even though it's really just the story of "Brer Rabbit" being retold with the rabbit being a surprisingly gullable Bugs Bunny.

It seems my recollection of the dialog goest this way. Bugs schemes to cheat the turtle and reverse the myth of the old Aesop's Fable. He disguises himself as a turtle sure to win the race, equipped with rocket power. As he is nearing the end of the road and the finish line, a group of rabbit thugs hiding behing a tree attack Bugs disguised at the turtle. The dialog goes more like this:
Gang: "Take dat, you doity toitle!"
Bugs: "I'mm not the toitle, I'm the rabbit!"
Gang: "Toitle!"
Bugs: "Rabbit!"
Gang: "Toitle!"
Bugs: "Rabbit!"
Gang: "TOITLE!"
Bugs: "RABBIT!"
After this, we see Cecil Turtle dressed in a bunny suit.
Cecil: (Munching on a carrot) "Yup, he's the turtle, alright.:bugs2:

Bugs: "Toitle schmoitle, I'm the rabbit!"

Tortoise Wins By A Hare is my favourite. Great animation (especially Rob Scribner's) and a great ending. :bugs2:

along with a lot of you, Tortoise Wins By A Hare
No contest. Tortoise Wins By a Hare is one of the best cartoons ever made. I really like Tortoise Beats Hare a lot too. Rabbit Transit is one of the worst Bugs shorts ever made though.

None of 'em!
The idea of making Bugs Bunny as a loser doesn't work for me.
It may be formulatic to have Bugs win all the time, but I don't find him funny as a loser.
Since Bugs (to me) is a cool, controlled character, I'm not a fan of Clampett's interpretation of Bugs.
I'm a big fan of Clampett's other cartoons though.

I have certain parts I like of all three -- the first part of both Avery's (Tex absoutely nails the brand-new character's personality in the first two minutes of the short) and Clampett's (Bugs' actions while watching the film and disguised as the old-time are great), and the middle of Freleng's (unlike the other two, Bugs isn't a dupe here, and gives as good as he gets with Cecil). But Bugs' defeat at the end of each is a bit of a downer (and why I enjoy the ending of "Falling Hare" more than "Tortoise Beats Hare", to compare the two Clampett cartoons where Bugs gets the snot beat out of him).

Actually, one more thing I like about Rabbit Transit is that you DO feel glad about what happened to Bugs at the end since he was more or less the "bully" in the beginning. In other words, he basically got what he had coming to him. By contrast, in the other two shorts, Cecil did come off as being a little less likable (and, thus, his victory was more disappointing).

YOUR opinion. I think it's easily one of the BEST BB cartoons, and certainly my favorite of the trilogy, although I do like them all. :bugs1:

I also choose "Tortoise Wins by a Hare". That one's one of Clampett's best; simply a masterpiece. I agree about Scribner's animation; the bit he does at the beginning with Bugs ranting and raving (and scrunching up his face while saying, "How DOES that moron do it?!") is some of the wildest and greatest animation I've seen in my life.
To be honest, even though I disapprove of Bugs being cast as a loser, I generally like all three cartoons, even "Rabbit Transit" (To me, the good gags in that cartoon make up for Bugs coming out a loser in the end).
This may be controversial to some, but for me..... RABBIT TRANSIT wins by a "hare"...:D

Oh of course. Maybe it's just Gerry Chiniquy's model of Bugs I find grating. It probably would've been a thousand times better if McKimson or Davis got it instead of Freleng though. Freleng was not well with handling a 'losing' Bugs (nor was Jones).

Agreed. "Hare Brush" and "Haredevil Hare" are evidence enough of that (both are among my least favorite Bugs cartoons).

Well "Haredevil Hare" is one of my absolute favorites so we'll have to disagree on that one. :marvin:

The main problem I have with "Haredevil Hare" is its' ending... where Bugs truly IS a loser. Bugs is in no greater a position than his foe... dangling helplessly from space by a crescent moon with dubious chance of getting rescued.
If Jones and Maltese had concentrated on a more satisfying and conclusive ending which does Bugs justice, I would like it much, much more.

Tortoise Wins By A Hare... even if we never do find out why the toitle *really* always wins... :)
Jeez... it's a cartoon.
The very best cartoons are created when, after thoughtfully devising many 'rules', you break the rules.
It's OK for Bugs to lose a couple -- really... it's unexpected... keeps it fresh and interesting.
It's a cartoon -- if Sylvester ever gave us a valuable lesson, it's that "ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE IN A CARTOON"
Haredevil Hare? -- immortal!... a great wacky Golden-Ager... Hareway to the Stars is OK, but much less interesting than HH because it 'does everything right'.
Oh yeah, the topic... my vote goes to the Clampett... but I like all 3.

Again, it wasn't at all the cartoon's plot that was the problem. It was really just the fact that it was totally out of character for Bugs to be the bully/jerk. Generally, it's Bugs who's initially tormented by some kind of bully and then gets the best of him in the end (Long-Haired Hare, The Case Of The Missing Hare, Barbary Coast Bunny, etc). Here, there was a bit of a role reversal with Bugs playing the tormenter/jerk and Cecil simply defending himself.
On the other hand, all three Cecil cartoons were like that, casting Bugs as a self-rightious jerk. But Rabbit Transit seemed to make him even less likable than in the previous two cartoons. That still doesn't stop it from being my favorite Bugs/Cecil cartoon though.

I have to say I'm just a little surprised at the poll results so far. I personally voted for Tortoise Beats Hare but expected it to be, going by the opinions posted, to at least be in second place. Transit's placing was a surprise.

I don't like my heroes to be invulnerable or infallible. Achilles had his heel, Superman had his Kryptonite. Bugs Bunny had at least 4 weaknesses:
1. Carrots
2. Dames
3. Not Vanity, but Pride, which leads us to....
4. The Toitle!
I like all three cartoons. The Avery has a brilliant opening sequence, worth the price of admission. The Freleng is a lot of fun, it's a kick to see Bugs actually "matching wits" with a clever advisary for a change. Tortoise Wins By a Hare is one of the remarkable group of exploding volcanos Clampett produced in his last years at Warners. It got my vote as the best, even though I tend towards the opinion (shared with others) that Clampett's Bugs is really Daffy Duck in a Bunny suit.
I think it's a shame Maltese & Jones didn't do a Tortoise VS. Hare toon. Might've been interesting.... I haven't seen any, but I understand there have been more Toitle vs Bugs stories in the comic books. Did they ever think of having Cecil team up Daffy and/or Elmer?
