Oh my GOD! I've read about this thing in Cecil Munsey's DISNEYANA -- the book even had a promotional ad for it -- but I've NEVER seen an actual example of it until now. Looks to be in pretty swell condition, too. I'd doubted any of these even existed anymore.

This is from 1927 if I'm not mistaken, Oswald's first year.

I was told the Disney Archive has a set. This so far is probably the only other example.

I've actually seen a xerox of the cover of that stencil set. I don't have a scan of it on hand, but I believe my associate Oswaldophile, David Gerstein has it somewhere.

(Also, I meant to thank you, Del for that personalized Oswald business card you posted for me awhile back)

Just asking, would it have gone for 1.5 grand before this whole Oswald craze? Just curious. It just seems to be a timely auction.

I'll bet it would have. Somebody willing to spend 1500 bucks on this would probably have been well aware of what he was buying even before Oswald showed up on the front page of USA TODAY. :)

Good question Thad- though the thing to consider is if it became any rarer after that Disney acquisition. I think not because it's always been a rare item. If Disney merchandises Oswald and/or includes him in a Treasures collection, I'm sure memorabilia will go up in value.

Any piece of pre-Mickey merchandise will fetch a good amount on eBay.

I'm pretty sure it would have gotten a large amount - I just didn't think it'd get THAT much!

I don't think the "Oswald craze" has driven up the price of Oswald items—yet—but it does seem as if it has reminded antique dealers of the character, so everyone is dragging out whatever Oswald items they have in an effort to unload their stock. I've certainly seen more of him on eBay lately than in awhile.

Well, comically, my bid didn't even go through!! And it's unique to see animation art auctionhouse Howard Lowery as one of the bidders on something for a change:p .

Buuuuut of the two mega-rarities this or the passel of lost-Oswalds that went off-auction today, I'd have preferred the 16mm lost Oswalds.

I can't call this an example of Disney merchandising. First of all, Oswald was Universal's property at the time and Disney never made a dime off it. Second, nowhere does Disney's name appear anywhere on the box. And now that Disney has the rights to Oswald doesn't change what happened in the past.

Wow! Thank you for posting those pictures, Dan. I'd heard of this piece of merchandise and always wondered what it looked like, but it's far more deluxe than I thought. I never expected such great art on the box - I love the fact that a mouse is setting fire to Oswald's books as he looks on happily (maybe they're not his books!). There was usually a mouse causing trouble on the Oswald posters and it's nice to see this trend was continued on other Oswald art too. Maybe the artwork is based on a poster for "Oh Teacher!" - it certainly fits the theme. The stencils themselves are pretty cool too - I recognise some of the poses from other Oswald publicity material I've seen in books and on the net, but others are new to me - the "Jazz Singer" pose is great!
