View Full Version : Flintstones on the Rocks
Sure wish this was released on DVD. I've never had the pleasure of seeing it, but from what I've read around the web, it was pretty good. I love the retro style used in the character designs! Very modern take on the original versions! I know, I know, it's ironic I used the word "retro" to describe something "modern", but the style looks so cool!

I was very lucky to have seen this. A bunch of us were in the middle of an intense game of Advanced Civilization when it came on (we had the TV on in the background). Most of us weren't even animation fans, but the opening sequence was so hilarious we put the game on hold until it was over. We all laughed our butts of through the whole thing.

I managed to see a bit of it one summer and was quite impressed. I believe it's a "Cartoon Network Production, but who worked on it? They should have done more.
I'd buy it if it were released on DVD, at least before A Man Called Flinstone (which has been delayed about a dozen times now). I remember it pretty much being a revamp of the first season of the Flintstones, with its edgier humor and innuendo.
Too bad there's no chance of it reairing, since Cartoon Network plays nothing but crap now.

Yeah, I'd buy a DVD as well. It was pretty good from what I recall. I liked the designs (but did think they made Fred too much of a jerk at times).
I don't think ON THE ROCKS has even aired on Boomerang. I know I taped it when it originally aired on CN... but I have no idea if I still have that recording or not. :befuddled

I'd buy the DVD in a heartbeat! Maybe they'll release it after the Flintstones season sets are all out.

I know that Genndy Tartakovsky (the creator of Dexter's Lab and other stuff) worked on it.
FYI, Fred Flintstone (looking like he did in Flintstones on the Rocks) made a guest star appearance on a recent episode of the Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. Cool that the Hanna-Barbera classic characters are still around (albiet in less than relevent shows).

I liked it too, but as much as I liked the designs, I did think Fred's nose was just a little TOO big.

It was a hilarious movie, except for one part: Fred and Barney in thongs.
I DID NOT NEED TO SEE THAT
That's the funniest thing I've ever heard Fred and Barney doing! Okay, now I gotta see this show!

I have heard that Chris Savino (http://savinoboy.blogspot.com) directed it.

Genndy Tartakovsky was a producer.
It was directed by Chris Savino and David Smith. They were both also listed as writers and storyboard artists along with Cindy Morrow and Clay Morrow.

Still seems rather a tease you'd have to go over there for that. Rather have the Museum come to me! (Everyone needs to discover Video-On-Demand more often)

I remember it pretty much being a revamp of the first season of the Flintstones, with its edgier humor and innuendo.
The animation style deliberately evoked the series' first season, when Barney's shirt front was partially open and binded together with strings. Voice actor Kevin Michael Richardson admirably recreated Mel Blanc's initial, pre-accident 'nasal Barney'. As with many 21st Century revivals of classic H-B characters- particuarly John K's twisted takes on Yogi and the Jetsons-vintage studio SFX and music score associated with the original property was used as well. (Actually, ON THE ROCKS did take some liberties, using many SFX that H-B didn't start using until 1966 or so.) Jeff Bergman, the best modern voice of :bugs1: :befuddled, marvelously channeled Alan Reed in a way Henry Corden never could- no disrespect intended for Corden, who was obviously aging and would only have four years to live at the time. The always reliable Tress McNeill turned in a great performance as an 'early/edgy' Wilma.
The movie must've been created as a 'prequel' or 'lost episode'. It's clearly set before either the Flintstones or Rubbles had kids. It most definitely echoes the edgier, boisterous tone of the first season, with Fred much more strident towards Wilma and Wilma returning much of his vitrol. (Don't forget that THE FLINTSTONES was initially created as an animated semi-version of THE HONEYMOONERS, and fans of that show know how well Alice could dish it out to Ralphie boy!:D ) We're mercifully spared the irritating modern touch of cameos from semi-regular or one-shot characters, a device that evokes a quick inside laugh but contributes absolutely nothing to the story.
In an obvious concession to looser standards, ON THE ROCKS contained much more adult innuendo than the series, or any 1960s prime-time show, ever could. Most prominent is the amusing misplaced-context gag involving the Rubbles' offscreen boisterous laughter over the vibrating bed. Wilma's provocative attire in her futile attempts at attracting Fred, underscored by an early Curtin 'jazz' piece, also come to mind. (She should wear her hair down more often!;) ) Then there's the hilarious, but rather stomach-turning sight gag of Fred quite inappropriately clad in a tight bathing suit.
Then there's the inevitable use of bathroom humor made popular by a pioneering John K creation of the early nineties. There's the return of the venerable vomiting-away-from-the-camera bit, which was rather popular in the theatrical era:sylvester :tomcat: :jerry: but pretty much disappeared in the sixties. And of course the obligatory crotch gag, with the detective hiding in the shower the victim. (Fred thinks he's reaching in to loufer Wilma's back.)
Viewers accustomed to the kinder and genter characters from the series' postnatal seasons- and subsequent Saturday AM sequel series- might be put off by the potentially grim storyline (although the title of the film says it all) and many loud arguments between Fred and Wilma. The frequently combative tone makes one wonder if they really will make up at the end. But for a lifelong FLINTSTONE fan and H-B buff, ON THE ROCKS is a treat. Regretfully, it did not get the same home video release other CN original releases:tomcat: :jerry: :tweety: did.:(
Well. after next Tuesday, there's only 1 more season to come out on DVD. Hopefully "FOTR" would be included on the last set!
Slightly off topic: I remember seeing a kid's book published starring The Flintstones and The Great Gazoo. I think it came out around the time that "FOTR" premired on CN. It used the retro designs of the characters if I remember correctly. It was one of those "sound-books" that used the classic H-B sound effects.

It's not included.
An independant release then?
A plan for a release is in the works?
A thought of a release?
Television distribution then?
Anything? ....

Does anyone have a copy they'll post online? From the interview I read with Chris Savino and fan reaction, it sounds like they did everything right! I really want to see this!
