For those who don't remember, Charlie was Chuck Jones' short-lived obnoxious canine. Pretty much every one of his cartoons showed him trying (and usually failing) to get a master. So for those of you who do remember him and have seen him, which cartoon is your favorite?

And no, his brief cameo in Dog Tales doesn't count.

I went with Often an Orphan (by Chuck Jones c. 1949) myself. That speech Charlie gives about needing to live in the country is the best cartoon acting has ever been. Now THAT'S personality animation.

Funny that Chuck Jones would have re-worked an idea that Bob Clampett originated in "Porky's Pooch", seeing as he didn't seem to be fond of Clampett...
Which one of those cartoons is the one that ends with a crazed Porky telling Charlie "I like you..." and laughing insanely, ending with Charlie as the fez-wearing master and Porky growling at him when he tries to get away? That is my favorite of those cartoons.

That's the ending to THE AWFUL ORPHAN. Great speech of surrender by :ham:
("-I acquiese. I know my destiny-") , capped by marvelous Blanc vocalizations of him flipping out, then as a final gag, his imitation of a dog.
It's hard to believe Charlie only appeared in five cartoons: three with :ham: and two solos. Charlie apparently made enough of an impression that, ten years after this last short, A HOUND FOR TROUBLE, he and :ham: did a re-creation of their classic "Have ya got a Labrador?" routine in a bumper of the prime-time :bugs1: show. Like many other of that show's bumpers, it was rerun for many years on CBS Saturday AM :bugs1: :beepbeep: extravaganza.

All of Charlie's shorts display Mike Maltese's creative peak as far as hilarious, literate dialogue. They are somewhat hampered by repetition: in each one, :ham: 'mails' him away only to see him immediately return, having adopted the accent and mannerisms of the foreign land in question. (More great performances by Blanc, especially the 'Australian' speech: "'Allo there, Nipper!") My personal favorite of the limited inventory is probably their first collaboration, LITTLE OPRHAN AIREDALE despite its weak ending. It's astounding that the 'faked pregnancy' sequence ("Well, there was once a case in Venenzuela.") made it past the censors at that time.;)

DOGGONE SOUTH, a longtime Saturday AM staple, is for some reason rarely shown on CN. We still quote some of its dialogue. "Oh, Belvedere- come heah, boy!" "Ah, magnolias-" "Yankees to the right of me- doodles to the left.":D

Doggone South, and I really hope it shows up on the next LTGC. We just recently got a dog, and I tried to convince my wife that we should name him Belvedere, just so I could train him to come whenever I say "Oh Belvedere, come heah, boy!" She was opposed to it. :(

By the way, I voted for A Hound For Trouble. I love its backgrounds, and Charlie's interaction with the restaurant owner is probably the best of any Charlie Dog cartoon IMO. Great punchline at the end, too. Capiche?

I'm going with DOG GONE SOUTH. The plotline with Charlie trying to win Colonel Shuffle by making Belvedier look like a traitor is great.

BTW, I don't believe the dog in PORKY'S POOCH is actually Charlie, but a Charlie prototype.
