View Full Version : Newly Discovered (for me!) Bradbury Art!

I realize this won't hold the excitement for any one else that it does for me, but I just discovered a new source of Jack Bradbury comic art that I can add to my long-running index of his work!

I can't even remember where I got the tip, but several months of eBay searching turned up a copy of the Whitman Big Little Book of "Goofy in Giant Trouble" that contains 121 panels of Jack's depictions of Mickey, Goofy, Black Pete, an elephant, a parrot, various pirates and some natives!!

The book is copyright 1968 which is mighty close to the end of Bradbury's career as a cartoonist, sadly shortened by his macular degeneration and loss of sight. It may explain why I strongly suspect that Jack had an inking assist on this job. The line is not his normally elegant thick and thin brushwork, but the inking remains incredibly true to his style.

My Bradbury Index currently stands at 6212 recorded pages of his comic book work -- for the most part added on in small increments as I recorded his 6-, 8-, or 12-page stories. I feel a little 'guilty' adding in 121 pages at one fell swoop from this Big Little book.

Maybe I should divide the number these full page panels by 6 - since that was the usual number of panels to a page that Jack drew.

Anyway, I'm probably the only one who cares, but I just wanted to express my delight somewhere, since it has become increasingly difficult to find new examples of Jack's work after 25 years of indexing -- and there's no more appropriate place that I know of than here at GAC!!

Black Pete is the name that was given in the US comicbooks to " our favorite villain " Peg Leg Pete .

Pete , during the years , changed his name a great number of times , both in comics and in cartoons . Some examples are : Peg-Leg Pete, Black Pete, Big Pete, Big Bad Pete, Dirty Pete , Pete de Fox , Pierre de Fraud , Foxy Pete , Pegleg Pedro , Pierre the Trapper , Louie the Leg , Sylvester Macaroni , Pistol Pete and many many other ones .

Thanks for the nice words, Doc. All of my research and notes are on over 500 index cards , since I started this project 'way before computers were in common use. It would take ages to get it in presentable, dispersable form, but hopefully when I retire I'll have the time!:eek:

(And I feel I should apologize for the weird HTML-exposed way the title of this thread showed up -- apparently you cannot edit a thread title once you have entered it. I've tried every way I can think of to change it, but can't -- maybe one of our moderators can clean it up??)

I have spent several years compiling an index for Dell/Gold Key comic artists.
I know Bradbury drew the following titles. In a TCR (THE COMIC READER)
article, Mike Tiefenbacher mentioned Bradbury as one of the artists on the
Hanna-Barbera books. Can you tell me which Hanna-Barbera comic characters he drew?

Jack Bradbury: Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Silly Symphonies, Hanna-
Barbera comics, Beany & Cecil, Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Oswald the Rabbit, Porky Pig, Andy Panda, Chilly Willy,
Spike & Tyke

You know, DCF, I've looked at a lot of comics that have Jack Bradbury art and I really can't recall one where he drew the characters from Hanna and Barbera's own studio.

The closest I can think of is one story featuring Spike & Tyke in Tom and Jerry Comics #187. Those are H•B characters, of course, but probably not what you're looking for.

After hooking up with Western, Jack worked pretty exclusively on Warner Bros., Disney, Lantz, and Clampett characters. You should ask Mike Tiefenbacher what he was referring to when he said there were Bradbury H•B comics.

(And thanks,Thad, for the 'facelift'! :))

It was given when Pete lost his peg-leg.

Not Woody Woodpecker? :woody:

Jack Bradbury may have drawn Woody, but not to my knowledge.

I did a Google search on "Mike Tiefenbacher" and found several websites but,
unfortunately, none with an e-mail address. So I don't know how to contact him.

I thought I had his email address, but it's not in my address book any longer.

Here's a way to reach him, roundabout as it may seem:

Go to ebay, click on Advance Search, choose "Search by Bidder" from the left column, and enter 'miketief' as the user ID.

That will take you to a page where you can click on his ID and send him an email through eBay.

A little convoluted, but it should work!

O.K. I might try that. Thanks!
