View Full Version : OT: To all our NY/NJ/CT GACers: Don't be angry with the MTA. Much.

That above advice only applies, of course, should the New York Transit Workers Union make good on its apparent determination to call a subway/bus strike at 12:01 AM on Friday. That'd be just as the snow and/or freezing rain starts, natch.

Now, if you're potentially affected as is The Geez, and you haven't yet mapped out that all-important contingency plan, by all means, get moving! (I'm told snowshoes will help.)

And try to remember when the strike has ended, and our favorite people movers are back on the job to once again treat us with the ultimate respect, that they have only our best interests at heart.

Good luck, everybody!

As of this writing(7:02pm EST), the two sides are not even close to an agreement and things are looking bleek right about now.

from combined media sources:

"The MTA has enacted a limited strike that will affect private bus lines after 12 PM today, December 16, 2005. As of now, Jamaica Bus Lines and Triboro Coach are the lines that will be affected. However, other private bus lines may join the strike."

In other words, all regular Jamaica and Triboro bus riders who are skilled in roping and riding Great Danes should still have no trouble getting around. :tweety:

Well, that still leaves the Green Bus Lines in parts of Queens and Brooklyn, the LIRR, Metro North, NJ Transit and the PATH subway trains from New Jersey, though anyone who's spent any time in the New York area knows all of that doesn't amount to much when the NYCT buses and subway lines go down (As one who remembers the 1980 strike, you can get from eastern Queens or the northern Bronx to midtown by commuter rail, or even from midtown to downtown via PATH during a strike, but it's not cheap in most cases, and not easy in all cases).

This pending strike is double-jeopardy for myself, because I'm serving on a grand jury, and you can't be out for that.

Even though there won't be any problem with me getting around Brooklyn, there's gonna be mad traffic in the streets.

If the strike still occurs, ol' Brayman here would have to rely on mom to get me to and FROM school as opposed to riding home on the bus with friends.

I heard that now talks will continue into early next week, and a new deadline for a strike might be Wednesday. Gosh, if you're gonna strike, just do it already!:p

Now they're setting the deadline to 12:01 Tuesday morning. Even though this won't effect me, the strike is illegal, and it prevents millions of New Yorkers from commuting to work. The economic fallout is huge. My opinion is that Mayor Bloomburg should take the route that Ronald Regan did in the 80's when air traffic control workers went to strike - he fired all 12,000 of them.
