Just wondering, but what was the "first" offical Terrytoon one reeler that starred Farmer Al Falfa?By the time the Terrytoons was launched in 1930, the Van Bueren Studios was still using the character until Terry put a halt to that and claimed Al Falfa as his own creation.

Terry created Farmer Al Falfa way back in 1916 when he was working at the Bray Studios. The following year (1917) he had opened up his own studio (Paul Terry Studios) and produced one Farmer Al Falfa short (The Wayward Pup) and a few other cartoons before the U.S. got involved in WWI and Terry was inducted into the service. When Terry got out (Around 1921) he started Fables Studios which prominently featured the farmer in many of the shorts. It wasn't until 1929 when Terry-Moser (later called Terrytoons) was started that Farmer Al was featured in what you call a true Terrytoon. The title doesn't come to mind now, but you could find it in the IMDB.

"Farmer Alfalfa's Revenge" is one of the 1916 cartoons Terry made for Bray.
Others were "Farmer Alfalfa's Eggcitement," "Farmer Alfalfa's Wlfhound," "Farmer Alfalfa's Blind Pig," "Farmer Alfalfa's Catasrophe," and "Farmer Alfalfa's Prune Plantation."

It is to my understanding that Nelson means first official TERRYTOON of the 1930s starring the Farmer, not anything silent. It's obvious when Nelson goes on to cite Van Beuren using the character in the early sound days which turned out to be a conflict. The key term here is Terrytoon, the likes of which did not exist in the silent days.

OF MICE AND MAGIC lists CLUB SANDWICH released January 25, 1931 as the earliest appearance of Al Falfa in the official Terrytoons. As for the first silent appearance, FARMER AL FALFA'S WAYWARD PUP always comes up.

I did come across a rare one-sheet theatrical movie poster of the 1930 Terrytoon release, "FRENCH FRIED", on that poster, has a well drawn sexy flapper carrying Farmer Al Falfa, that says "Just Married" on his suitcase, so maybe this was his Terrytoon debut?

Hey Dodgers, for some strange reason, I was unable to download the poster, but I do have the link that everyone can see.

It's a really nice looking Terrytoon poster from 1930.
If anyone can't see this poster when clicking the link above, just go to search (on Moviegoods.com)and type in FRENCH FRIED and you'll be able to see the poster.

Thanks !
Too bad this cartoon is one of the very few Terrytoons unincluded in Jerry Beck's monumental ( and a must buy for any animation aficionados ) collection .

Sure , Nelson !
I had to write the name of the cartoon in the search section .
By the way , do you own that cartoon ? Is it on the level of the " Ape Girl " one in terms of risquè gags or it is a " mild-mannered " cartoon ?
