hello!
i hope i am posting this in the correct location, and in the correct manner; this is my first time posting here.
i am hoping someone can tell me the name of a cartoon that i have not seen in over 30 years. this is what i can remember of it:
1) it's a christmas cartoon, i would guess from the 1930's.
2) there's a particular scene, where children are helping santa get dressed. he's wearing long-johns. the children paint the long-johns red; santa stands up and bends over, so they can paint the area where he was sitting. the children use popped popcorn in lieu of the white fur on santa's outfit.
3) i guess that it might have been a harman-ising or a van beuren cartoon, i seem to remember it had a style similar to those.

unfortunately this is all i can remember of this cartoon, but i would dearly love to see it again. if anyone knows anything about this, i would love to hear from you! merry christmas!

Do you remember if the cartoon was in color or black & white?
Also do you remember if it was TV or Video?

Are you thikning of "Christmas Comes once a Year" by Max Fleischer?

Lilymunster particularly recalls a scene where the kids are painting Santa's long-johns. This is clearly not a segment from Fleischer's Christmas Comes But Once a Year.
Any other ideas? (I myself can only wonder:rolleyes: )

The cartoon is Lantz's TOYLAND PREMIERE (lantz.goldenagecartoons.com/1934.html) (1934), long a part of various Woody Woodpecker TV packages. When Santa's usual red outfit is eaten by moths, the elves use spray-paint to turn his underclothes red, making them into a new suit. The popcorn and fanny-painting sequences are exactly as you remember, though Santa isn't really in his long johns.

I've always wondered what happens at the end of that cartoon when the cake flies away from Santa. Every single print from every single collector I've ever seen has the splice that goes straight to Santa laughing. I'm pretty sure the cake hits Stan and Ollie in their faces, but if a blackface joke were edited out, that doesn't make sense, since the rest of the cartoon has caricatures of Al Jolson, etc. in it.

Does anybody know for sure what's missing?

Lilymunster~

Obviously I'm not David Gerstein... Buuuuut to date "Toyland Premiere" is not available on any legit media in the USA (unless I'm gravely wrong). But it was broadcast many, many times, and so there are numerous videotapes of it... And besides those, at least one high quality bootleg DVD containing it (obviously from a very good film print), has turned up.

Soggy and Rex, by any chance is this 'bootleg' version you mention missing the clipped scene at the end like the re-release version....?

You can PM me if you prefer about this.... :)

If you are meaning the quick cut where we don't see Laurel and Hardy getting a cake in the face, yes that cut is still there. :( I've never seen a version without it. Perhaps it could have been trimmed to fit in the TV show episode...
