Before the cat and mouse, the short-lived Van Beuren studio produced cartoons featuring a Mutt and Jeff-like duo dubbed Tom and Jerry.

If you have seen them, what are your opinions of these shorts?

I only saw couple, but it's alright. I prefer MUTT AND JEFF though.

(BTW, this is off topic, but the comic strip MUTTS, was actually named after Mutt in Bud Fisher's comic-strip, rather than the fact the strip is about a group of animals)

Tom & Jerry (a.k.a. Dick and Larry) are one of my most favorite duos. They are sort of like the Two Stooges if you know what I mean. I especially like the humor instilled in the cartoons as well as the scenarios. Other than The Little King, I think this series was one of Van Beuren's best. I especially like "Puzzled Pals", "Rabid Hunters", and "Redskin Blues", all of which are Tom & Jerry entries.

I actually like the Van Beuren Tom & Jerry cartoons (I have @10 cartoons in my collection). Like "Aesop's Fables", the cartoons were wonderfully surreal. One of my favourite Tom & Jerry gags is featured in "Piano Tooners", where Jerry flushes a bad note down an off-screen toilet.

My favourite Tom & Jerry cartoons are:

Wot A Night
The Tuba Tooter
Piano Tooners
Hook & Ladder Hokum

Personally, I like them. I think they're the best series from the Van Buren studios (then again, I haven't seen too many series of recurring characters from the studio).

I only saw one, "Magic Mummy". I liked it. It has spooky surrealism that reminds me of Fleischer. (The little Ub Iwerks that I have seen also has it.) I guess that was the style during the early '30s (the age of rubber-hose animation).

I grew up with a fear of skeletons, which are prominently featured in this cartoon. Watching it helps me confront my fear. I wouldn't be surprised if the makers of this cartoon were inspired by Disney's "Skeleton Dance".

I think those cartoons vary in quality depending on how well the story works with the animation. I have seen eight of them, but not very recently.
