I think we're all familiar with Warner's Blue Ribbon reissue titles, but few people relize that the Disney cartoons were reissued similarly, but that detail has been deemed insignificant to some (Even Jerry Beck doesn't have a Disney Original Titles Section on his Cartoon Research Website).

According to some sources, Disney began reissuing it's cartoons in 1947 (When the were still releasing cartoons thru RKO). Some United Artist Cartoons (Like Pluto's Judgement Day) were given new title card art to go along with there original titles, and some Pluto Cartoons (Like Squatter's Rights) were Reissued as Mickey Mouse Cartoons. Confused yet?

Anyway, After Disney's Cartoon Contract with RKO expired in 1955 (Up a Tree being the last cartoon released with RKO titles), Disney began reissuing some their old color cartoons with Buena Vista Titles. 1956 Donald Duck Titles were attached to most color DD cartoons, but since no Mickey Mouse and only 3 Goofy Cartoons (All 3 With Irregular Titles, BTW) were released, New Titles for those cartoons were created on the spot. Some Other Things I have Noticed:

-There seems to be 3 Variations of the Buena Vista Titles.
1.) After Character Head Shot and Refilmed Character Title, there is a jumpcut to either the title card art (Pre-1946, i.e. Sky Trooper) or the Original Credits (Post-1946, i.e. Motor Mania)
2.) Post-1946, Both Credits and Character Titles are refilmed, and there is a jumpcut to the Title Card Art (i.e. Pluto's Christmas Tree)
3.) Post 1946, There is a Clean Dissolve from the Character Title to the Credits to the Title Card Art (i.e. Self Control)
-On the Complete Goofy DVD set, All but 2 (How to Dance and How to Sleep, both 1953) 1950's Goofy Cartoons have reissue titles. The Mickey Mouse cartoons are just as bad, and the state of the Donald Duck Cartoons are unknown.
- A Least Two Cartoons (Donald's Ostrich and R'Coon Dawg) that had their original Titles on various Videos Disney put out in the 1980's and 1990's have Buena Vista titles on the Walt Disney Treasures DVDs.
-In the Life With Mickey VHS Along, I counted Three Variations of Titles on Mickey's Polo Team, Alpine Climbers and Mickey's Circus
-On Mickey's Garden (On the Here's Mickey Set), There is a Jump Cut from the Character Title to the original UA title art (Alpine Climbers has this too)
- The Most Interesting Reissue Titles Cards are those used for Black and White Cartoons and Some United Artists Color Cartoons. They look like some kind of variation on the standard RKO-Buena Vista titles, but with musical notes on them. These are the kind used on most Black and White cartoons in circulation (Including the ones on Mickey Mosue in BLack and White??) and some UA cartoons like Donald and Pluto and the aforementioned Mickey's Circus.

Can anyone point me to a better authority on reissue Disney titles (Such as a complete list of reissued cartoons?)

I'm interested in the original titles for Disney shorts too, but I think you know more than me. I don't know where you can find records of when each short was rereleased - maybe you could try contacting the Disney archives. I believe that the DVDs with live action Disney films (I think it's the Vault collection or something like that) each come with the short that was shown with it in cinemas so you could find out the rerelease dates for those shorts.

BTW the cartoons on "Mickey in Black and White" have titles reconstructed for laserdisc to look like the originals - minus the name of the original distributor. (Exceptions include the earliest shorts - which have their original titles - and "Klondike Kid" which has normal rerelease titles). I believe a similar reconstruction may have been done to a few shorts in the 70s with a rerelease of several B&W Mickeys to cinemas (this might explain why my copy of Mickey's Good Deed has titles like this). This batch of rereleases also resulted in new posters being designed, but I might be wrong on the title cards.

Mac, Are You Sure It Was Only For Laserdisc? Because on the Life With Mickey VHS i had, I Noticed that Shanghaied has titles similar to the ones you described.

I did a search for old threads and found out the information about this - so all the following info I learned from David Gerstein. 6 B&W Mickey shorts were indeed rereleased, with recreated titles, in 1974 - Touch Down Mickey, Mickey's Good Deed, Building a Building, Shanghaied, 2 Gun Mickey and The Mail Pilot. BTW my copy of "Mickey's Good Deed" comes from the video "Jiminy Cricket's Christmas" which is a release of the TV special - "Fom all of us To all of you"
