Camaflouge

[Cartman]

There is a cartoon I have made during WWII called CAMAFLOUGE. It features a chameleon named Yahooey who teaches a group of soldiers the importance of camaflouge. I have heard from the guy that sent me this cartoon that it was done by Disney animator Frank Thomas (and I believe another one, but cannot remember his name). I'm just wondering if this was done independently or if it was done for one of the major Hollywood cartoon studios.

It was actually made by the U.S. Army... It was directed by Frank Thomas at "Fort Roach" (the Hal Roach Studio was commandeered by the army in WWII). All the animators on it were those drafted (or enlisted) from the major studios.

Camoflage was produced by the US Army Air Force's First Motion Picture Unit. This studio was formed by J.L.Warner and Owen Crump at the behest of General "Hap" Arnold in 1942.The FMPU's animation division was run by Rudy Ising and some of the animation was done by the late Frank Thomas.

Siiiiiiiiigh... Despite Mr. Weil's attempting to correct me above, "Camoflage" was indeed directed by Frank Thomas (at "Fort Roach"/FMPU). Frank was one of two permanent animation directors there under the command of Major Rudy Ising. (And NOOOOO poor Norm McCabe was not the other director, even then he found himself bumped back to animator.)

Ising had quit MGM in 1942 to enlist in the army where he was almost immediately sent to officer's training school and then put in command of the Army animation unit. Bill Hanna would recall that Rudy came and visited at MGM during the War, presumably checking on production there. One animator is remembered as walking in and seeing his beloved former boss (Major) Ising back at Metro in full uniform and affectionately yelling out something on the lines of "Hey Rudy it's nice to see the Army has worked some of that fat off of your ...!!!"
