I'm interested in whether you think that the 1955 Walter Lantz/Chilly Willy cartoon, "The Legend of Rockabye Point", is a hit or a miss. It is one of only four Lantz cartoons (and one of only two :chilly: ) that were directed by Tex Avery after he left MGM. It was written by Michael Maltese.
I think it's a hit despite the fact that it appears to have been made on a low budget. It's a hit because the gags are funny. I especially like the clarinet gag.

It's a mit.
I'm a big fan of the studio and shorts that were released during that era, but despite Avery's work, I never found this to be anything exceptional. It's an average cartoon and I wouldn't even rank it among the top in Chilly Willy's film library either.

I got a copy with part of The New Woody Woodpecker Show and i considered like a hit because some gags are very repeating but also fun. :chilly:

Um, only a doofus can make a flop with a high budget but only a genius can make a hit with a low budget. And, since the director is Tex Avery, there is definite genius here. Hit! :chilly:

No question - this one is a hit. It has that classic Avery feel to it. :chilly:

I guess Chuck Jones was a doofus when he began his career with Sniffles ;) (okay. Sniffles isn't so bad, but not as good as Road Runner or "Punch Trunk")
Anyway, I like this Chilly Willy cartoon. I think it would have been better if in the end, an elderly Chilly Willy makes an appearance during that scene with the dog and the polar bear.

While I enjoy this cartoon and it is a classic, I think I would tend to prefer 1954's "I'm Cold" (another Avery Chilly short). To me that one is simply one of his best - the timing, the gags, the soundtrack - it's just such a good cartoon :chilly:

This is easily one of the best Chilly Willy cartoons, but I find all of Tex Avery's and Alex Lovy's to be classics (I also enjoy the later ones by Sid Marcus). I like the way that Chilly seems to be a bit more mischeivious than usual and all the gags are hilarous. :chilly:

Any Lantz cartoon directed by Tex Avery is a hit!
It is also one of my favourite Chilly Willy cartoons. :chilly:

An ironic observation about this cartoon. It has almost no dialogue, and it was written by Michael Maltese. "Rabbit Seasoning", also written by Maltese, has some of the cleverest dialogue ("pronoun trouble") of any cartoon ever made. Both cartoons are very funny. Goes to show how versatile Maltese was.

Yep! Maltese also wrote many of the greatest Roadrunner cartoons as well as One Froggy Evening with Jones. Definitely one of the greatest and most versatile writers of animation or anything ever.

I can't believe some people don't like this one. No offense and I'm sorry about responding to an old thread but I couldn't go without defending one of the best cartoons ever, imo.
After this one and "Crazy Mixed Up Pup" I'd have made Avery happy so he'd stay. Think of the possibilites! I've never seen his other 2 fwiw. I read somewhere that Avery left because of something about how often they collected their pay. If that was really all then I'd have done something...
However, God bless Walter Lantz for always sticking with what he said. He's one of few who did it all his life.

BloodyChamp,
I don't mind that you responded to my old post. I forgot that I even posted it! I notice that everyone called it a hit. :chilly:
