View Full Version : Minor OT: Coal Black character = Tiny Toons character?

For those of you who have seen Tiny Toon Adventures and didn't wretch over it...

:bosko: -(And why would they? I was in it!)

:honey: -(Me too!)

For those who have seen Tiny Toons, there was a character called Merrie Melody, and for some oddball reason she somewhat resembles :sowhite: , but does not have those jazzy roots that the original Coal Black had.

Still think the Censored 11 cartoons should remain locked away from reality when Spielberg modifies one of them for a modern audience?

:bosko: :honey: -(Nobody objected to us!)

(You guys were modified into puppy-like toons.)

:bosko: :honey: -(Nobody's perfect.)

Yeah, I agree that Mary Melody was a conversion of So White, that was kind of slipped in as a subtle reference to the banned cartoon "Coal Black". I never really saw her do anything at all, she was never a focal point of any cartoons nor participated as a wholehearted cast member.... kind of similar to how much recognition So White is getting from Time-Warner in comparison... :sowhite:

Here's a link to her model sheet:

The only "big" appearance of Mary Melody was in an episode (forgot the title) that involded Mary going with Furball to Florida and every time Mary will fall asleep while at the beach, Furball will go back running to Acme Acres to try to catch Sweetie. Kinda vague description, but it's all I remember.

When I was a kid not knowing about :sowhite: I thought Mary Melody was just a token Black character created for Tiny Toons. The surprising thing is Hatta Marri a nazi war criminal appeared on Tiny Toons.

Interesting connection. It's somewhat ironic that at the time Tiny Toons was being produced, TV producers started making an effort to make their programming more "PC", which meant that the show's creators had to diversify their casts... and they drew inspiration from a cartoon banned for being "racist". (that is, if the theory is correct)

The surprising thing is Hatta Marri a nazi war criminal appeared on Tiny Toons.
really!?!? when??

That's nothing. What about "Who Bopped Bugs Bunny?", which featured Stanley the Elephant, who was a parody of Sidney the Elephant, created by Gene Deitch (yes, THE Gene Deitch) at Terrytoons. Now that has to be the most obscure cartoon character reference ever!

If anyone can tell me the title of the episode she was in, I'll post a screenshot. I know I saw that one, and I probably have it recorded too, as I taped that show faithfully for the first four years it was on trying to get the episodes with my animation in them.

I have a character sheet from my animation pool days of inbetweening on that show, which has a bunch of characters gleaned from WB traditional characters that never had episodes about them, or appeared as cameos somewhere in the backgrounds (or in school, crowd scenes, etc.) As a side note, if you think that "Little FowlMouth" was a Foghorn Leghorn adaptation, you're wrong.... There was actually a more distinct Foghorn ripoff (and the Dog too) made up as child-like denizens of Acme Acres.

Although it's probably already been mentioned before, Buddy also appeared in an episode too. :buddy: He was a lot more demented than the Buddy some of us are familiar with.

That's nothing. What about "Who Bopped Bugs Bunny?", which featured Stanley the Elephant, who was a parody of Sidney the Elephant.
Yes, I remember that one too- and what about the time they trashed "Bret Simpleton" (aka= a greenish-skinned Bart Simpson). These guys knew what they were doing....

...and Stanley was voiced by none other than Jonathan Winters!

That's interesting. I never knew they had planned Foghorn and Dog Tiny Toon counterparts. I knew about the Tiny Toon version of Speedy ("Lightning Rodriguez") who never appeared on the show. What were some of the others?

Too bad he never made it into any cartoons.

I'll post a few scans in the next few days of other characters I have drawings of (and I can find). The ones I can remember distinctly were extensions of : Foghorn Leghorn, The Dawg, Sam Sheepdog, Henery Hawk, and a couple more I can't figure out.... one's a blue cat wearing beatnik sandals, I wondered if he wasn't supposed to be a "Hep Cat" derivative or something. Keep in mind that these drawings were extremely preliminary... Plucky Duck was originally written to be named, "Mucky" Duck.

Could you possibly be thinking of that "Animaniacs" episode? I believe it was the Warners' 65th Anniversary Special.

By the way, did anyone ever happen to read the end credits for that episode? Funniest thing I ever saw, I had tears in my eyes once it was finished!!

THAT'S Lightning Rodriguez?!? Jeez, for years I thought he was that little Spanish mouse from "High Toon"! They SO should have used this guy at some point, why didn't they? I don't think the "Speedy Gonzales stereotype" thing had started in 1990, had it?

Larry T
09-08-2004, 04:02 PM
for years I thought he was that little Spanish mouse from "High Toon"! I think that particular character was supposed to be a chihuahua... Actually, when I first saw these drawings I thought the mouse character above was intended to be a minitaure version of "Little BlabberMouse", until I read the names.

That sounds like it could have been a Tiny Toon version of Cool Cat. Yeah, only this bluish cat isn't a tiger at all... he doesn't seem to resemble any other WB character that I can think of... I have a single drawing of him which I'll post when I scan it.

However, I do recall that there was another really, really rough sketch of a tiger that I saw at a briefing session, but he was all cutesy-wootsey and had a big head with fluffy tufts of fur on his cheeks... definitely not a Cool Cat offspring.... I might have a Xerox of him too, again, I'll have to do this when I get home and dig out the box of drawings within the next couple of days.... (where's the sweatting smilie when you need it?)

Maybe an early rendition of "furball", :sylvester 's counterpart?

Thanks for the images, Larry. The dog actually looks more like Charlie than the Barnyard Dawg. The blue cat kind of reminds me of the cat in "Birds Anonymous".

Vinnie Venison made it...there was a cartoon where Montana Max went hunting and encountered him. Barky Marky, Fowl Mouth, Arnold, Concord, Marcia, Gogo, Sneezer and Tyrone also made it. I never knew Tyrone was a Cecil Turtle knockoff though, nor did I know he had a name at all.

Jack
09-08-2004, 10:52 PM
Egghead Jr. also made it, he appeared in an episode where Plucky cheats on a test by erasing Egghead's name and writing his in.

I seem to recall Tyrone being named in a cartoon with Elmira (all I recall from the episode is her saying his name in Fuddese - "Tywone.")

I really liked the Pluck Twacy episode (don't recall which one since I haven't seen either in years) when I first saw it, mainly because the backgrounds seemed to be more interestingly designed than what one usually encountered in TTA. I think it took place in a house with onion domes.
