View Full Version : Slightly OT: Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries
I had never seen an episode, but just noticed CN is airing episodes of this show in the mornings. The few minutes I saw were pretty enjoyable. Characters seem right on, voices are pretty close and the premise, while contrived, seems sustainable (it is, after all, just the premise for Scooby-Doo, right?).
What do other people think of this show?

It was pretty good during it's early seasons, but the quality started to take a nosedive as the seasons progressed. Joe Alaskey, and June Foray did a pretty good job with their respective roles. However, Tweety's jokes can be hit, and miss sometimes. Overall, it was a fairly good WB series of the non Spielberg veriety, but for my money, "Taz-Mania" was the better of the two.
It was a pretty lame series. Sylvester NEVER got an even break, even when he WASN'T an antagonist, the plots were mediocre and repetitive, and the insane amount of minor LT characters appearing that only about four people remember... Of course, what else do you expect from a show that's main purpose is to sell more Tweety t-shirts and purses..:o:shame:

Not a good show.
Tweety was annoying with his constant puns.
Joe Alaskey was good as Sylvester and Tweety, though.

My least favorite revived LT spin-off series, with the possible exception of BLT which I've never seen a single episode of. I can't think of anything that was remotely enjoyable about this show.

I can think of one thing: the theme tune - I quite liked the theme tune! other than that I don't remember much about it other than I found it disappointing.
Even when I was a kid and it was still airing on Kid's WB, I had no interest in it whatsoever. I think I might've watched the show once and saw bits and pieces of it later, but always changed the channel... I mean, why watch that when you could watch the originals on Nickelodeon? For God's sake, I found TAZ-MANIA more interesting than this crap (which could've been a good series if it didn't suffer from WBA's talking-head syndrome, which they did not create, but defined).

-Thad I thought "Taz Mania" was quite good, but, like you said, it often seemed just like a bunch of obnoxious characters talking on screen (like the Platipus brothers and Taz's actual family). The better episodes were the ones that didn't have much talking in them, and I didn't mind the ones with the Kiwi and those German Bushrats (who, amazingly, didn't talk). There was also an episode called "Taz Babies" that I found pretty funny.

I actually enjoyed Taz-Mania also.

You know, it's funny. CN shows spin-off shows from Looney Tunes most of the time but they try as hard as possible not to show the actual cartoons. Anyone notice that?

The first season of S&TM is nicely animated, but incredibly boring. The half-hour shows drag on forever. In season two, the show began doing two shorter cartoons instead of one long story. The quality of cartoons improved for a few clever episodes, but the quality quickly declined again.
So, in other words, there are some decent S&TM cartoons... you just need to sit through a LOT of bad ones to find 'em.

I find the show to, in general, have boring stories or interesting plots with poorly-done humor (or a combination of boring stories AND poor humor), though still watchable. I also thought that some of the later episodes have rather sloppy animation, though I prefer it to the extremely stiff, lifeless animation of the "Duck Dodgers" TV series. It's not a really bad series, but it was never something I went out of my way to watch.

I never got to see much of "Taz-Mania", but I did watch several episodes of "The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries" back when it was on Kids' WB. From what I recall, I liked it. I didn't think the minor character cameos were all that bad - in fact, I thought they were nice sly references to the other classic cartoons (although I do notice that the majority of them - Angus McCrory, Hubie and Bertie, Michigan J. Frog, etc. - were from Jones shorts rather than Freleng shorts).

A little bit of trivia: Granny's bulldog on S&TM was originally going to be Marc Anthony. However, Chuck Jones wasn't comfortable with the idea, so Marc Anthony became "Hector" instead.

Marc Anthony was a big, loveable, affectionate mutt, who only beat up Claude Cat because he was harming Pussyfoot... So of course Jones wouldn't be comfortable with his character being an antagonist towards Sylvester...
Another bit of trivia: Notice how this incarnation was done right after Friz Freleng died? Could it be that he was completely against this series, but after the unmentionable, they said "The hell with him, he's dead, let's do it anyways"...? I can't help thinking that this is true, as well as how "Duck Dodgers" was done so soon after Jones' death...

I agree. I really liked the first season, but the later episodes when there were two mysteries per show weren't quite as good, I thought they were too much like newer cartoon shorts. I really wish CN would pay more attention to the classic cartoons more than the newer LT shows.
