Didn't want to steal thunder in the other thread about these so I went ahead and did a new thread. It reminded me of 2 things I've been meaning to ask.
Who was that little girl called Alice and what happenned to her?
Also, why did they do voice overs in live action cartoons?

If you're reffering to Disney's Alice In Cartoonland series, there were four girls who portrayed Alice. They were:
Virginia Davis
Dawn O'Day (real name: Dawn Paris. Later became Anne Shirley for playing her namesake character in 1934's Anne Of Green Gables)
Margie Gay
Lois Hardwick

Funny you should ask. These were the ALICE COMEDIES, commonly referred to as "Alice in Cartoonland," though this was not the official name of the series. While there were four girls who portrayed Alice, only one that I know of survives, Virginia Davis McGee, who was the first and best ALICE from the 1923 pilot ALICE'S WONDERLAND, produced in Kansas City, and into the Los Angeles produced series from 1924-1925. The second Alice, "Dawn O'Day" appeared in only one film,ALICE'S EGG PLANT (1925), which is one of my all time favorites.
This was the series that gave Walt Disney his first break as a cartoon producer, and having relocated to Los Angeles, Disney started the first animation studio there, first working out of his uncle Robert's wooden one-car garage, and later from a storefront six block west on the same street. Both buildings still survive in the Los Feliz/Hollywood area, near the old Pickford Studio, which was formerly the home of ABC.
When Disney's STEAMBOAT WILLIE became a success, the Winkler Film Company, which originally contracted the series sold them to Alfred J. Weiss in, or around 1928. To capitalize on Disney's name, they cheaply "dubbed" in
by post-synchronization methods the soundtracks for a number of these cartoons, and re-released them through The Raytone Corporation. And while the tracks are a bit irritating in many cases, they are sometimes the only surviving evidence of this important period in Disney's career.
It's a fortunate coincidence that you should ask about this films since I had produced a compilation program, ALICE IN CARTOONLAND in 2000. Although I am preparing a new and expanded two disc version, the original is back by popular demand on Amazon.com and also on Ebay.
