You know the first seven DVD sets of the Walt Disney Treasures collection: Waves 1 and 2, and how they used to be available only on the DisneyDirect website? Well I can't find them anywhere. I even wrote to them on the "contact us" page, but I doubt I'll hear from them anytime soon. :(

Anybody know where I can buy these discs? I don't trust ebay or Amazon resellers.

Not if you refuse to buy from ebay or Amazon, no, they're pretty much impossible to find.

you didn't see this coming? Disney Treasures are sold as limited edition.

Well - limited in their first incarnation with nice cases and collectible tins, maybe - but I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see all of the Treasures resurface down the road, but maybe in a tin-less format of some kind.

I suggest you join the Disney DVD Club. Although they have been selling out, VERY recently my Dad purchased the entire second wave...Actually, I think he now has all of the Treasures discs except possibly "Silly Symphonies."

Anyways, the point is, that LONG after these have been unavailable, the Disney DVD club has been selling them (At very good, i.e. non-inflated prices) exclusively through their mail-order catalog. Now, if you join them online, don't expect to find the Treasures sets in the selections you can sign up for immediately. So I recommend that before you sign up and commit, you call their number and ask if they have any of these that you want still in stock. Perhaps you can even order them to fulfill your initial membership quota. I'm pretty sure they no longer have MMILC Vol. 1 or Silly Syms. anymore, but who knows....they stopped selling them for a long time, then brought them back...thats why I now own (as gifts from my dad) Goofy & Mickey B&W 1, two impossibly expensive sets...along with a bunch of other ones that are more easy to find elsewhere. Anyways, check it out, and happy hunting!

(Now if I could just get a Mickey in Color Vol. 1!!!!)

I was told by a Disney official that the boxsets were made from returns - especially ones were the tins were damaged.

I had a major issue with the boxset since the Tins weren't the limited part of the DVDs - it was the DVDs themselves. As the band read, "A Limited Series of Select Rare Material From the Disney Studio Vault." If it is proven Disney was making extra DVD sets to create the boxsets, they will be sued for false advertising and misrepresentation.

I assumed that there was some issue like that concerning their availability. However, I personally could care less if there is a ding on the tins. The tins I actually have (I think only 3 out of 7 sets I own, off the top of my head) are stored away from my DVDs. To me, it is almost inevitable that they would be dinged if you actually want to open them to get the discs out and watch them. If I had the tins from one of the early waves (which were also packaged in box sets, sans tin) I would sell them on ebay, because I don't care for 'em. The tins I have (Donald v.1, On the Front Lines, Mickey B&W 2) are too common to bother to attempt to sell them.

You're right that if they printed more, it would be false advertising. However, since they seem to have come in and out of availability on an erratic basis, I think they were just returns like the Disney rep said.

That being said, I wouldn't be opposed to them reprinting those discs! They could release them again without tins and in a different color packaging and I would be happy. Like I said, I want the cartoons, not the fancy packaging. I sure wouldn't mind finding a reasonably priced copy of MMLC v. 1!!!

At the time the DVDs were released, they were a "limited series". This hardly locks Disney in to never re-releasing this content again in some form in the future.

So the first two waves were only avilable online? no wonder I couldn't find any copies of mickey mouse In Black and White vol. 1.

SpeedyFast,

I think you misunderstood. All the waves were widely available in stores initially, but to find them NOW, 3 or 4 years after their release, you will have to hunt online for a copy in all likelihood.

The presentation on these discs should altered if they are re-released in an unlimited fashion. This would be a good thing on Silly Symphonies so they can eliminate all the annoying easter eggs.

But these DVDs are sold as collector's items like a limited edition lithograph or one of their figurines.

Why are you so annoyed by the "easter eggs"? I find it fun to round-up all those great shorts PLUS those shorts came with neat introductions by Walt Disney on his Disneyland show but they didn't continue with the tv-print of the cartoon. Instead they proceeded with a restored copy with original titles and all. So all the shorts are there, it just takes a little bit more effort to find them.:tweety:

Happy hunting!!:)

The tins, limitation sheet and the band WERE the "limited part". The words, "A Limited Series..." bear this out, as it means specifically the tins and certificates of limitation.

You would be correct that they are open to legal action if they made more tins and limitation sheets. The discs aren't limited in themselves. I've been collecting books for decades. The outer bells and whistles and tipped-in limitation sheets on "limited editions" is the limeted part. If the discs were "limited", they couldn't legally even have replacement for defective discs.

What part of ""A Limited Series of Select Rare Material From the Disney Studio Vault" are you not getting? That is what was declared on the band around the tins and was signed by Roy (Save) Disney. Did those tins come from the Disney vaults? No. The fact is that if Disney ran off a bunch of discs using the same set up as the DVDs released as Disney Treasures, they broke their covenant and played collectors for a pack of suckers. Remember that before these boxsets showed up at Costco, the price of Mickey Mouse in Color was close to $200 on the used market. After they came out - they lost all of their collectible value.

And while Easter Eggs can be fun, I had to deal with two older Disney collectors who kept driving me nuts because they kept needing me to help them find their cartoons that were hidden away. One or two hidden bonus features are cute. But it seemed like 1/4 of the cartoons were Easter Eggs on Silly Symphonies. That's when it gets annoying - especially when you want to show the cartoon.

I hate DVD Easter Eggs! I have a life and don't want to spend my valuable time hunting around trying to find something I've already paid for! Just put them all on the %&^*ing menu! Just had to vent.

My biggest beef along the same lines is the ads, disclaimers, federal warnings and logos I have to sit through just to GET to the menu of the DVD. That's why I use a script with MPlayer to rip all the cartoons (including easter eggs) to the hard drive and then make my own no-frills DVD that pops me right into the menu. No offense, but goodbye Leonard Maltin!

:bugs2: Maybe it's because I don't have too many other DVDs but I didn't think the easter eggs on Silly Symphonies and other WDTs were that hard to find. It was a very pleasant surprise for me to find "Who Killed Cock Robin" along with the brief history intro by uncle Walt. Now WKCR is just about my favorite SS (I need to see the rest of them in a volume 2 to make my final judgement). And then about a year later when I reinserted disc two in my player I found Farmyard Symphony. "Wow another cartoon!" I thought. For a while I discovered something new every time. :donald: :mickey:
