This year we've seen a few announced classic cartoon DVD releases either delayed or cancelled. Which one were you most looking forward to...?

The nominees are:

The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection --- Delayed when Sony announced that they have delayed the Steve Martin live action remake movie until Spring, 2006.

The Mr. Magoo Show: The Complete Series --- Originally due for release earlier this year. Delayed by Classic Media until 2006 for reasons unknown.

The Man Called Flintstone --- Delayed twice by Warner Home Video (original release dates were Dec. 2004 and Mar. 2005). Now on hold due to legal reasons, but copies are currently available in Canada.

The Harveytoons Box Set --- Announced by Classic Media for a Sept. 2005 release. Rumored release date is now sometime in 2006.

Woody Woodpecker --- Columbia House discontinued their Collector's Edition late last year before the announced Volumes 16-20 could be released. Shortly after, Universal announced plans for their own WW release sometime in 2005, but so far we've heard nothing else...

For me, the Pink Panther set. Aside from email contacts with Art Leonardi and Dale Case, I don't know much about the behind-the-scenes with DFE, and I think there are some stuff about it in the next DVD.

Woody Woodpecker. How Universal really have rights to the shorts?

I'll split my vote between Woody and the Pink Panther, though I really do want all of these sets. :woody::thinkpink

At first glance, I thought maybe of the Woody Woodpecker set... but then I realized that unless Universal planned to let all the Swing Symphonies and "Cartunes" out on that set (which I highly doubt), there would be nothing available on it that I didn't already have in nice shape.

So my real vote goes to those Harveytoon classics... those are getting more and more rare every year, with all the consecutive television editing, revoicing, chopping off of titles, PD-version ruining, etc. :huey: :buzzy: :audrey:

Some of them are really beautifully-animated and actually quite enjoyable... they deserve a lot more respect than they get.

I had to go with the Pink Panther set. I was actually really looking forward to this one over the summer and I think Sony/MGM really missed out since I believe this would have been a big seller around the holidays.

Next would be Harveytoons. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Classic Media gives them a good release and not just throw the syndicated Harveytoon Show copies onto DVD.

Woody would be next. I would have loved to complete my Columbia House set. Universal's announcement was so vague, however, that we still have no idea if they were talking about releasing the Lantz classics or the modern WW Show from the 1990s.

Definitley Woody Woodpecker, especially if they throw in the other cartoons/characters. Entire sets devoted to Pink Panther, Magoo, and even the Harveytoons would get VERY tiring.

My vote went to the Pink Panther:thinkpink

This was one set that I was really looking forward to owning the dvd collection and now we have to wait possibly until January 2006 for the set to come out.The Steve Martin verison will be released on Febuary 6th, 2006, so SONY/MGM wants to get the jump a month early on Pink Panther releated material to tie in with the movie, so they have plenty of time to promote the film.

But Classic Media gets a thumbs down from me, since they were the one company with the most delayed dvd collections this year. The latest i've heard from CM is that both sets(Mr.Magoo, Harveytoons) will be released sometime next year....So this means it might be a long time until we see both sets get released either in the summer or next fall.

But regarding the Harveytoon collection, from what I know there has been no mention on bonus material and Jerry Beck(who helped put together syndicated The Harveytoon Show) has not been contacted by CM to help out on the collection and who know's how the set will be represented without Jerry invloved on the set.

:woody: all the way. I never saw a single Woody cartoon besides "Pantry Panic" in my life and was looking forward to this release. But who knows what Universal has on their minds anyway?
"The Man Called Flintstone" would come in second for me. I know that it's from the start of HB's 'dark ages' but last time I saw it on CN, I hated it. But I was ready to give it a second chance (which I don't give many movies I hate the 1st time 'round) but now that second chance looks very slim.

:thinkpink comes in 3rd, I've only seen a small asortment of Pink Panther cartoons in my life and they were all last year when I rented the final disc of the Pink Panther Film Collection and when I rented "Goldfinger" on vacation and that had a Pink short on the tape. I was ready to see him from day 1.

I could live without Harveytoons (I would get them nonetheless) and Mr. Magoo (ugh). But I still hope these sets do indeed come next year.

I voted for the Harveytoons set, or should I say the Noveltoons set, because that's what these cartoons truly are. I want to see Paramount cartoons starring someone besides Popeye.

Considering I have the Mr Magoo set and we're not even sure what was to be the contents or even source of the Woody Woodpecker release... Pink Panther was the set I was MOST looking forward to!!! A complete collection of the DFE P.P. theatrical shorts with original soundtracks, full title cards and credits and thoughtfully restored transfers had been lingering at the top of my wishlist for years. Luckily, the timing is appropriate as I'm broke right now, but I was still very dissapointed by the announcement of this set's delay...

There really weren't enough disc specs released by the studio to make a fair judgement on any of them, but I picked the Harveytoons box set, simply because I would like those on DVD more than the others. If they are edited, or have their original titles removed (or both), then I will skip it.

The cartoons that I considered the best ones in your list are without any doubt the Woody Woodpecker ones ( and in that category I also include the Andy Panda shorts and the other Lantz series ).

But my choice happens to be the Harveytoons set because the various Noveltoons or the Herman and Katnip cartoons are really starting to get rare stuff among us animation aficionados.

Also , I'd love to see better prints of them cartoons ( the Casper cartoons available in dvds show , in the majority , better prints than the ones I have seen in the past years and I hope the same thing will happen with the shorts featured in the Harveytoons dvd set when it will be released )

P. S. : For those who may concern , as I pointed in another thread , " The Man Called Flintstone " is available in Canada ( and I bought it ) .

Maybe Universal were planning on releasing a quick and crappy collection of cartoons for their Woody Woodpecker release, but then got wise to how well other classic cartoon sets have been doing and decided to spend more time and money on a better release which would appeal more, and sell better, to collectors. Admitedly I doubt it, but that would be cool!

I went with Woody, providing they are uncut, with original titles and featured the other Lantz characters.:woody: :chilly: :andy:

I went with The Pink Panther Cartoon Collection. It'll be nice to watch The Pink Panther cartoons . I wonder why they didn't include the openings and bumpers for the rest of The Pink Panther Shows? Maybe they might be release the bumpers on differnt discs one for the Ant and the aardvark, etc.:thinkpink
