I was also at the flea market today that I saw the original soundtrack to the movie "Popeye" starring Robin Williams. It features music by Harry Nillson. The songs on that soundtrack are the following:
1. I Am What I Am
2. He Needs Me
3. Swee'pea's Lullaby
4. Din' We
5. Sweet Haven
6. Blow Me Down
7. Sailin'
8. It's Not Easy Being Me
9. He's Large
10. I'm Mean
11. Kids
12. I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
I've seen that album, but I wouldn't tried to get it. It was a great soundtrack album of the live action version of "Popeye". Here is the album cover.

Frankly, the songs were not good. The only good one was Sammy Lerner's original I"M POPEYE THE SAILOR song. The rest are forgettable. Who remembers them, eh?:sailor:

I agree -- loved Robin Williams as "Mister Eye," but the songs were the most unmemorable and insipid film music I've ever heard -- really dragged the flick down to a mediocre level.
That soundtrack album may be fairly collectible, as I doubt many were sold. :p

It was used because no one remembers its source, and the audience thought it was new. Again, no one remembers it, and someone knew it was available for the commercial. But it still can't compare to "I'm In Love With a Wonderful Guy" from SOUTH PACIFIC, or "As Long As He Needs Me" from OLIVER, now can it?

I don't think that's it at all, the "nobody remembering it" part that is.
Paul Anderson's movie "Punch Drunk Love" also utilized "He Needs Me," as in the same Shelley Duvall recording from the soundtrack. Paul occasionally uses songs from movie soundtracks, particularly those remembered for their quirky nature (a trait he picked up from his father, the late television personality Ernie Anderson). Clearly Paul wasn't trying to pass it off as a new song created for the movie. No doubt he instead thought there would be more than a few people who would immediately recognize it...even those who would choose not to.
I know it pains some people to have to admit it, but the movie and the songs have a fair number of genuine fans now thanks to television and home video, like any movie that ends up becoming a cult favorite. The film's merits can be argued and debated for years, but to say that nobody remembers it or its soundtrack is completely baseless.
