I'm currently on vacation and can't update my site for a while, but I thought I share this information to people who visit my website.
Sometimes, I get asked why DePatie-Freleng subcontracted six shorts to other studios. Well, I got the answer from DFE animator Art Leonardi and I thought it was worth sharing this email in this forum.
The answer is very simple! The cost factor! It was cheaper to subcontract
them out of the studio. The problem arose that the contract with United Artist
stipulated that ALL the cartoons were to be done "In house" and not to be
subcontracted to an "Outside" production house. Only those few cartoons were not
created "In house." [2 "Blue Racer" and 4 "Hoot Kloot"]
Because they were not done as well as the ones that were done at our studio
the poor quality was noticed even by the powers that be at United Artist. DFE
was told to stop ALL outside Production and to complete the remaining cartoons
at DFE.
The success of a cartoon is still dictated by the TALENT USED!
Even DFE had contract problems.
