Not too long ago I saw a cartoon where Mickey Mouse recieves the stereotypical boxing kangaroo (one that honked like an animator's Model A) and it, along with the little one, naturally spends most of the cartoon making life impossible for good old Pluto. Then I started thinking of Hippety Hopper pestering Sylvester... then that kangarooish dinosaur from the Flintstones that literally "boinged", and I thought... has there ever been a decent kangaroo classic cartoon character???

How about Kiko the Kangaroo, who forever had to cope with Farmer Al Falfa and Puddy the Pup (or vice versa)? :mighty: :gandy:

Is the kangaroo in Norm McCabe's "Hop and Go" (voiced by Pinto Colvig) considered to be Hippety Hopper?

Nope.
Also, the kangaroo on The Flintstones had the "imaginitive" name of Hoppy. (I guess his full name would be Hoppy Rubble ;) )

His name is Claude Hopper in the cartoon, so no. I don't know why people dislike Hippety so much, though.

Interestingly enough, when I created my own cast of classic-style cartoon characters, I made my frontrunner a kangaroo - Ken Kangaroo, to be specific (he's the second character from the left in this picture):

So if I ever get into the animation business and get to utilize these guys, you can bet that there'll be one more worthy marsupial in Toontown.

Didju Draw These? Hey, very very nice, J.B.! You've got talent, Good Luck!
This may not count as a "classic" animation cartoon, but back in the mid-1960s there was a Saturday morning series "Linus the Lion Hearted", sponsored by Post cereals (practically all the characters, like Linus the Lion and Sugar Bear, appeared on the Post cereal boxes). One of the characters was Dinny Kangaroo, who was voiced by Carl Reiner, of all people. My memories are a bit vague about the actual series, I was a cartoon-crazy little kid at the time, and I'm not aware of the series ever being rerun or syndicated ...,I remember the cereal commercials better (ah, the powers of advertising!). As I recall, Dinny was a real Australian Kangaroo: big Australian accent, dressed in a hat & jacket suitable for the outback, had a boomerang, sometimes sang "Waltzing Matilda", etc etc. I don't remember him boxing...if he didn't box then animators avoided at least one cliche, since most cartoon kangaroos seem to be boxers (OT: did this site ever discuss boxing cartoons? There sure are a lot of them!)
