Hi.
Just want to announce that Jerry Beck is working on a new book called "Pink Panther: Ultimate Visual Guide", which will be similar to "Looney Tunes: Ultimate Visual Guide".
It should come out in April or May 2005

Moved to News forum. Sounds interesting.
I wonder if the book will mention any of the non-PP Depatie-Freleng cartoons (like the Ant and the Aardvark, etc)?

I should hope so! A book entirely devoted to the Pink Panther only would be a mighty boring read...

I want to know when we'll be getting a complete box set collection of PP shorts (plus Inspector, Ant & Aardvark & Blue Racer). France and I believe Germany or Japan already have these in production and scheduled for release later this year! With the 40th anniversary underway and all the recent promotion, new merchandising, DVD film collection and I even think a new movie in the works, I would expect and hope to see a complete catalogue release of all these shorts in North America as well!

This sounds interesting - but the upcoming Jerry Beck book I'm ethusiastic to see is "Animation Art: From Pencil to Pixel, the World of Cartoon, Anime, and CGI" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0060737131/theunofficlooneyA/)

Hi.
Just to let you know. Yes, Jerry will infact at least mention OTHER DFE theatricals, like Ant and Aardvark, Tijuana Toads, and even...(some may argue) Hoot Kloot.
Hopefully, the book will convince MGM to release a remastered DVD set with every single DFE theatricals.

It is definately a different take on Animation History, well worth the purchase, even if I do say so myself. I had a hand in writing some of the chapters along with several other honored collegues. :betty:
I spent a good while looking at "Animation Art" over at my comic book shop awhile ago. I don't think I'd like to buy it, maybe get it as a gift, but I don't see it justifiable to spend $40 on a book that barely covers the theatrical animation output. Maybe I need to look at it again, but all that I got out of it was about 30 or so pages devoted to the history of the cartoons we love. And even with that, it wasn't anything we haven't heard about either.
Who picked out that ugly eyeball cover anyway? It's so unattractive, at first glance it looks like some art book I'd have no interest in purchasing.

As you admit, you didn't spend much time reading it. You should consider giving it another pass. When the project was begun, it was understood that with the many excellent books that have delved into the detailed history of Animation, this one should be unique. There ARE facts told that have not been previously reported, or have been published incorrectly, and certainly not from the perspective presented in this book.
Understand that each section was written by an expert in a certain area of Animation History. And the problem all of the contributors had was that their sections were limited to a certain word count. So the text had to be brief, yet infomational. . With these types of limitations, the writing had to be concise and clear, which is a credit to those writers. And for what I was contracted to do in discussing aspects of Silent Animation, color systems, the Fleischer Studio, and Industrial Animation, I seemed to have fulfilled the text requirements to the satisfaction of the editor, Jerry Beck, and the publisher, Flametree, Ltd.
As for the cover concept, I'd agree that it is odd, a sensitive point with Jerry Beck. But I'm sure you've seen far worse--I know I have, and on Animation books. So just think of how much worse if could have been. :bosko:
