From bucks to broncs, Walt Disney's Comics and Stories 647 shifts scenes from forest to frontier. In ”Riding Deranged”, writer/artist William Van Horn takes Donald out west for work as a dude ranch guide. But his position at the Lazy-Q means trouble, too-- when outlaw Woimly Filcher wants Donald to guide him to a strongbox of stolen gold! The Western wilding continues in our first backup story, Carl Barks' 1943 classic ”Limber W Guest Ranch”. Now Donald is the dude for a ride round the prairie... and it's Huey, Dewey, and Louie's job to keep him intact.
Of course, four ducks do not a WDC&S make. Mickey Mouse clocks in with ”Pin-Top PC”, by Stefan Petrucha (The X-Files) and Fabrizio Petrossi. Visiting from 2447, Mickey's futuristic pal Eega Beeva brings a computer chip that can give any inanimate object artificial intelligence. When Mickey loses the chip in a strong wind, he must trail it to Pi Square science lab-- where it's due to be used in a dangerous experiment.
Three more Disney sagas round out our book. In Frank Jonker's ”Confidence Booster”, Big Bad Wolf is quarantined-until he fulfills doctor's orders by catching a pig. Donald will spend ”Money Like Water” to win a lotto prize, in the first-ever USA publication of a story by Dutch master artist Jan Gulbransson. And finally, in Janet Gilbert's and Vicar's instant classic ”Pure Inspiration”, the nephews' search for purloined paintings take them to a land inhabited by characters from art. Mona Lisa sells pizza, Munch's ”The Scream” hollers your ears off, and a poet exclaims that ”Duckburg stinks-- because everyone's a critic, even three little finks!
So what did everyone think of this issue? Don't think that because I premote the Gemstones on my website that you have to be biased positively.....
