The sixth season of THE SIMPSONS is out on August 16 in the US. This is old news, but I was browsing Amazon, and I thought the cover art was odd:

While it is funny cover art, am I the only one seriously annoyed that they changed the packaging format? That's gonna look *really* weird on my shelf.

It is reported that 6-10 will match, with a different head for each family member. Personally I preferred the ordinary boxes, but watcha gonna do?

Personally, I'd have preferred a packaging similar to the other ones already released.

Well the episodes at this point are getting worse so maybe this is a marketing gimmick to attract people to funny looking boxs.

The episodes were hardly getting worse at this point. S3-8 is the golden age of The Simpsons IMO.

The best years for THE SIMPSONS are from Seasons 3 (the Al Jean/Mike Reiss years) to Season 8 (the Bill Oakley/Josh Weinstein years). The next 4 seasons (9-12) were executively produced by Mike Scully, who was better at writing for the show than running it.
Personally, I think the best thing that happened to THE SIMPSONS is when the production left Klasky/Csupo after Season 3 and went to Film Roman.
While it is funny cover art, am I the only one seriously annoyed that they changed the packaging format? That's gonna look *really* weird on my shelf. I don't think that its actually a cover, since it doesn't have anything to open it with. It looks more like a plastic sleeve that will (hopefully) go over a packaging design simaler to the ones used for the previous seasons.
While a DVD shaped like Homer's head works, and will probably sell well. I can't really see how a Marge shaped head (with long hair) or a Lisa head (with spikes pointing out from all directions) would look good without it being too big.

I agree. S3 is markedly better than S2 (though S2 still has some good episodes).

They claim that all the sets will fit nicely on a standard DVD rack. As for the casing of the DVDs, I believe the discs will be in individual slim cases like Futurama. Given that, I actually prefer this new look if only because he slim cases are more durable than the case used on the first five seasons. However, I would've liked all the seasons in the same type of box from a purely aesthetic point of view.

I'm out after Season 10.
That's stretching it, but I personally can't watch any episodes after that. I figure I'll go out on an even number and with this 5 installment cover design series, the shelf display doesnt take any awkward looking hits.

What season is "The City of New York v Homer Simpson" from? Thats been banned on Sky 1 for several years because of the events of 9/11 I think.
Would there be any problems with it in the relevant season set? Saying that it would be stupid not to include it.

That's the first episode in the ninth season, grim. I doubt that it won't be on the DVD set.
I don't care for much of The Simpsons past about the ninth or tenth season, but I still buy them all because I'm a completist.

I bought Seasons 1-5 all within the last couple weeks. Season 5 was good, but relied way too much on cameos by guest star celebrities. Anyway, I probably won't go past Season 8. I do agree with the person who said they're getting attractive packaging to attract buyers who would otherwise be turned off by the declining quality in the writing (it got worse in each season IMO).

I agree. There were a few good episodes, but honestly the fifth season is probably my least favorite so far.
*Edit: I mean my least favorite of the released DVD sets, not of all 16 seasons.

does anybody know what special features will be included (besides commentary on every episode)?
Season 5 was good, but relied way too much on cameos by guest star celebrities. I agree, there were some pretty pointless celebrity cameos, such as those in "$pingfield" (Robert Goulet and Gerry Cooney), "Deep Space Homer" (James Taylor), "The Last Temptation of Homer" (Werner Klemperer) and "Marge on the Lam" (George Fenneman). I do think most of the episodes were as funny as those in the previous seasons. Some people also claim that season five introduced the kind of wacky episodes that we see now, but I disagree with that as there were many silly episodes before like "Marge vs the Monorail", "Duffless", "Homer at the Bat" and "Bart the Daredevil" to name but a few.

"The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson" was the first episode of Season 9, but was a hold-over episode from Season 8. It is currently back in the syndication run since the FOX station here in Chicago has broadcast it twice within the last month or so (we get THE SIMPSONS 3 times a day here).

"Marge v The Monorail", "Duffless" and "Deep Space Homer" are classics IMO! :D
S4 is probably my favorite season of the ones I have so far. (I have 2, 3 and 4).
As for "Bart the Daredevil" that has one of THE funniest moments ever when Homer falls over the cliff. :D ;)
As for "Homer at the Bat" thats not my fave ep - though a fun parody of the film "The Natural" (1984).
