It's that time of year again. When I go on a shopping spree for books on Amazon to read this summer. Last summer I really enjoyed reading SUNDAY NIGHTS AT SEVEN by Jack and Joan Benny. This summer I have these on my wishlist:

Daws Butler: Characters Actor
Welcome Foolish Mortals: The Life & Voices of Paul Frees

Along with Gemstone's The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck and Walt Disney's Vacation Parade #2.

Does anyone else have any suggestions or comments for books about classic cartoons, movies, radio shows, or comedians that would be worth a look this summer?

The University Press of Mississippi has excellent books on animators and cartoonists in their CONVERSATIONS series. I highly recommend the ones on Carl Barks and Charles Schulz.

The new Richard Fleischer book, Out Of The Inkwell: Max Fleischer And The Animation Revolution looks great. I'd pick it up if I had some extra money, or if our Library would get it.

I can't say enough good things about the Little Lulu series of comics from Dark Horse.

Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho's House by Steve Stoliar and Movie Comedy Teams by Leonard Maltin are also recommended for those interested in the subject matter.

If you enjoyed SUNDAY NIGHTS AT SEVEN, you'd also like Leonard Maltin's THE GREAT AMERICAN BROADCAST. Lots of stories and background info on some of radio's top shows (you've probably already read it).

This isn't animation related, but I did purchase a book called 100 Years of Comic Strips at my local Barnes and Noble. It includes comic series such as "The Yellow Kid," "The Katzenjammer Kids" (later made into the "Captain and the Kids" cartoon series by MGM), and Segar's "Thimble Theater" strips, which introduced Popeye.

I have already read it and enjoyed it very much. In fact, it was the book that inspired my yearly "TTTP Summer Reading" threads a couple years ago. :)

You too, eh? All right!! I think that's going to be my No. 1 summer book as well, even if it's easier to prop open on a coffee table than under a beach umbrella.

And Tom Stathes no doubt will also appreciate the fact that it includes a couple of "Jerry on the Job" Sunday strips. [Edit: It's just come to my attention that Tom owns that book too. More proof positive that GACers Know Quality!]

Well since this will be a slow summer and books are the best thing for now, until the fall arrives with more classic dvd collections.Just today, I picked up a great book on legendary comedy pioneer Mack Sennett, that is titled "Keystone:The Life And Clowns Of Mack Sennett", that covers the entire career of Sennett himself, his studio, his rival Hal Roach and the comedians that worked for him in front and behind the camera. This book just came out recently and if you're a fan of classic slapstick comedy, then I highly recommend this book.

Other books, I do plan on getting Richard Fleischer's new book on his father Max Felsicher and I heard it's pretty good book.Other ones I want' to check out is the biography of Louis B. Mayer, founder of MGM and a new book on Buster Keaton.
