Shouldn't we respect Sylvester better? I mean, he did win WB's most Academy Awards, Jerry Beck calls him "Best Supporting Actor", and "one of the most reliable cartoon characters in WB's stock", and proabally WB's best/worst dad. (If you know what I mean):sylvester :sylvester :sylvester :sylvester :sylvester :sylvester :sylvester :sylvester :sylvester :sylvester :sylvester :sylvester :sylvester

I think Sylvester really got the short end of the publicity stick. Instead, it's Tweety that gets crammed down our throats because he's cute and can attract girls to "Looney Tunes" merchandise (for the same reason, Pussyfoot is now appearing on more and more products). Sylvester's great accomplishments as an "actor" have really gone unnoticed - his number of cartoons probably rivals Bugs Bunny's, and he's been handled by almost every major Warner director (Freleng, McKimson, Jones, Clampett, Davis). Plus, he's the most versatile personality in the Warner roster. I love Sylvester's cartoons, but the character doesn't really get his just desserts.

Poor guy - can't catch a bird, a mouse, a kangaroo, or a break.

Sylvester is certainly underappreciated. The "character actor" of the group. On another thread they're discussing whether he's a villain. He can certainly play a good villain, but he can be a very sympathetic character, too. He makes no muss, no fuss, just goes in and plays his part. The Spencer Tracy of cartoons.

Uh, wait, make that Gene Hackman.

i consider him underapreciated,too.
he starred in many academy award nominated cartoons (and in three winners),he is,along with bugs, porky, elmer and daffy, the greatest character created by wb.

did you ever notice that in space jam(ok,it's a terrible movie,i know but ...hey,mj is there)when the looney tunes go to choice a way to challenge the aliens the ones who are considered to be the leaders are bugs, porky, daffy, elmer and sylvester?
they're in fact the only characters which were not exclusively directed by one directors but which were used by all the directors(jones,clampett,avery,freleng,tashlin...) they're the leaders!this is one of the few imes i've seen sylvester considered as much an important character as bugs/daffy/porky/(also elmer is a bit underappreciated)

Of course, Yosemite Sam was the next character created after Sylvester, and he had a large simalarity to Friz Freleng, who was the only director to use the character.

Actually, I never noticed that before. That's a very good observation. Apparently, the producers of "Space Jam" did know a thing or two about the Looney Tunes' heritage after all (they could just as easily have made Bugs, Daffy, Tweety, and Taz the head characters, but they didn't).

Sylvester's certainly got my attention - he is in many of my very favorite WB cartoons.

Look at slevester, before the tweety pair up. He was very sharp and very funny entirely on his own. If "Kitty Kornered" does not prove that, I don't know what will. He could have ended up being the next Bugs Bunny.

after he was paired with tweety he still was casted alone,in such gems as canned feud or a mouse divided to quote a few ones
.he was also casted as a father for sylvester jr. and he was also a foil for hippety hopper and speedy gonzales.
yes, considering all this,he's really an underappreciated character

I think almost everyone of those characters are underrated even DAFFY! Merchandisers seem to think that Bugs, Taz, and Tweety are the only characters. Why is Taz popular anyway? He only appeared in 6 Bugs Bunny cartoons. Taz is way too overrated and shouldn't be classified as a main character. Sylvester and Daffy should get more fame.:daffy: :sylvester

I definitely think Sylvester is underrated and underappreciated. In fact, I just mentioned the same thing not long ago on the "Favorite Academy Award Winning Cartoon" thread. I think Sylvester is much funnier than most of his co-stars and really deserves as much attention as Bugs and Daffy. I also feel the same way about Porky, but that's a different story.

YES! I think Sylvester should be the third important LT character.

For some reason Taz (a character I've never been particularly enamored of) has been embraced as some kind of "badass" icon over the last decade or so. I agree that he's ludicrously overrepresented in WB promotion and merchandising.

As to the thread's original topic...hear, hear! I've long maintained that Sylvester was the most versatile "utility player" of the LT/MM cast, and has never gotten his critical due.

Which is ironic, considering that in the cartoons, he's more of a ravenous dimwit than a "badass".
