I was watching Gunsmoke and I realized there has never been a cartoon series set in the old west. I know there have been shorts set in the old west but a series I don't know. Does anybody know

You know, it's funny. I've kind of noticed the same thing. I suppose The Wacky World Of Tex Avery is probably the best I can come up with at the moment, but that probably doesn't count since it was really just a series of televised shorts (with only one set in the wild west).

Doesn't the Hoot Kloot series at DePatie-Freleng Enterprises count?

I have never heard of Hoot Kloot but it sounds neat. I was reading about it at the BCDB http://www.bcdb.com/cartoons/Other_Studios/D/DePatie-Freleng_Enterprises/Hoot_Kloot/

Er, Deputy Dawg? Quick-Draw McGraw?
Paul J. Smith's later Woody Woodpecker shorts were set out west so often that Texas may have become the most frequently-seen location in the series. But I think that was by accident. (-:

It's not a series per se, but in 1988 there was a "Gang" movie from HB called "The Good, The Bad and Huckleberry Hound" set in the West.

hah we used to watch that along with TinTin and Asterix in elementary school for French class...
Brings back memories.
There are several DVD releases available here in Quebec but all are in their original French language tracks without available subtitles.
I was never too excited by these cartoons as a kid, but I remember enjoying the animation a lot. Considering it was part of french class though, and the fact that I didnt really understand what the hell was going on in any of them, I don't think I was too fond of these series.
I've considered picking up the DVD releases though, just for nostalgia. Who'd ever think I'd want to relive elementary school French class memories a decade later?

The Legend of Calamity Jane, 1988.
Very good, and thus very short-lived. Canadian viewers got to see all 13 episodes on Teletoon, but in the States only about 4 were aired before cancellation. :(

What about the :ysam: / :bugs2: series?
Only four of those - "Hare Trigger", "Bugs Bunny Rides Again", "High-Diving Hare", and "Wild and Woolly Hare" had a Western motif. The others featured Sam in a role other than cowboy.

I bet there were plenty of them that were set in the old west.
Quick Draw McGraw has to be one of 'em!!!
I bet all cartoon series had their share of Old West-themed episodes one time or another.

It was pretty much a western version of "The Inspector" and it wasn't the best from DFE, although some were decent.

there are a few more, but i can't think of there titles at this time.
when i lived in texas, we got WGN out of chicago, and they showed all the PP epsodes, i know there were at least 4 to 5 epsodes.
i know there was an epsode of the Bunny and clyde series that was in an old west setting also but can't think of the title, as well as Merlin epsode that was set there.
and we forgot many Droopy cartoons set in the old west.
