I know why they put Daffy and Speedy together actually, but to be frank, I could have done it better. I almost thought of an interesting idea of Daffy and Speedy both being friends most of the time trying to flee from Sylvester. I think Sylvester could be a natural foil for Daffy as well.
I've been irked and disturbed by the Daffy/Speedy pairings since I was eight. I never did like it. Ducks chasing mice just doesn't make sense, IMHO.

I read somewhere that the reason why Daffy and Speedy were paired was because at the time, WB cartoons were most popular in the southwest. And Daffy and Speedy were their most popular characters in that area. I think WB themselves knew the whole DAffy/Speedy formula was kind of odd, hence Daffy's saying that "ducks don't eat mice" in their first official cartoon (Moby Duck). I'll admit, the whole badness of the Daffy/Speedy series was part of what made those cartoons entertaining for me. Just seeing how bitter and nasty Daffy became was good for a chuckle.

The "so bad it's good" thing?
I know about the whole Southwest thing, that those two were the most popular over there, and that's why they put 'em together.
I remember in the commentary for "Speedy Gonzales" on the LTGC vol. 1 that Jerry Beck (I think it was) stated that the Daffy/Speedy cartoons are very, very weak.

I'd say that's an understatement. He's being very polite.

Warner Bros. doesn't seem to emphasize that pairing much. Though in a CBS special in 1980, there was "The Chocolate Chase," which in my opinion, would have been better done with Sylvester (in fact the whole thing was mostly ripped from Speedy's self-titles short, with chocolate bunnies in the place of cheese).

Funny you should mention that cartoon at Easter of all times. I'll admit, that one was cute but pretty poor. Perhaps part of the reason why I don't mind the Daffy/Speedy pairings as much as some was because I never thought Sylvester really had the chemistry with Speedy that he had with Tweety, and of all his cartoons, the ones with Speedy Gonzales were probably his weakest. Plus, he almost seemed like too obvious an antagonist for the fastest mouse in all Mexico. It was kind of cool to see Speedy get a slightly less predictable nemesis in his later cartoons.
To be honest, I thought Speedy's best antagonists were those two cats in Mexicali Schmoes.
