Have you ever had any odd experiences, or heard some rather dim-witted comments when watching classic cartoons with a less-than-enthusiastic friend(s)?
I remember I once took one of my Golden Collection sets to school and played them on a laptop. As soon as I popped in disc 1, the guys begin to say "ach! I hate Bugs Bunny - he always wins!", so we watched a few Daffy cartoons, and I distinctly remember one of them saying after the end of The Scarlet Pumpernickel "that's such a bad influence! Too much violence!". He said the same after Tortoise Wins By A Hare. I'm sure that had we seen Have You Got Any Castles, they would've called me a racist!
Then I recall I once wrote something about Looney Tunes, and this guy saw the words "Termite Terrace" written - he thought that was the name of the guy that took care of the WB water tank!! No offence to this fellow, but that really disturbed me.

While watching several Clampett cartoons on GC2 once, my across-the-hall neighbor walked in and declared that "Looney Tunes" have horrible animation compared to "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe". It was bad enough that he said such a ridiculous comment - but in the middle of "Baby Bottleneck", no less!
This same friend also tells me that I'm wasting my time trying to pursue a career in animation and that I should try to do something sensible, like butter carving or Communism. I don't take him seriously anymore.

High school is no place for smart people like us, I'm afraid. :shame:

HAH! That's gotta be the funniest thing I've read all day! He-Man, really....

Yeah, that He-Man comment is about as dim-witted as the anime crowd saying Japanese animation is superior to classic 1940s American animation from any of the Big American 3 (Disney, WB, MGM).
However, most people just aren't into cartoons that much and many people wouldn't notice the difference in MOTION anyway. They just think one picture says it all as opposed to a SERIES OF DRAWINGS describing motion.
Heck, there are more than a few character designers in animation (these guys aren't even real animators!) that don't see why the classic animation is a LOT better than any TV series or recent movies they've worked on!
Believe me, I've read and participated in this argument more than a few times myself! :bugs2: :daffy: :sylvester :ysam: :befuddled :speedy: :coyote: :beepbeep: :lepew: :ham: :marvin: :sowhite: :dodo: :bugs1: :tomcat: :jerry: :droopy: :wolfie: :red: :bbear: :mickey: :donald: :goof: :scrooge: :sailor: :betty: :audrey: :felix:

Heck, if anything, I think anime should be MORE like classic 1940s animation. I recently wrote a lengthy anime fanfiction for another forum I frequent, and the script reads a lot better if you imagine the characters moving with the wild elasticity of a Tex Avery cartoon. That's just my vision, I guess.

I suppose this is as good a place as any to tell this story. In high school gym class, we were playing tennis and one of my court-mates was dedicating his lobs to random people, like Jay Leno for example. At one point he said "this is for that 'Tom and Jerry' guy, Fred Quimby!" I tried to correct him, but unfortunately I rushed my explanation and now he probably thinks Tom and Jerry was created by some lady named Hanna Barbera!:tomcat: :jerry:
