Does anyone have this set? I just found out about them and I'm thinking of picking them up. Is there a reputable place someone could recommend where I can purchase them? I've seen them on Ebay. If you have it, what do you think? Are they all unedited toons?

I don't recommand you this set. This set are more an outrage of Tex Avery's big talent. Some cartoons with blackface are edited and two shorts are deleted from this DVD. How are from Region 2? So yes, this is it that we speaking

*tilts head quizzically* I've never seen this DVD set before, and I've often wondered when Tex Avery was going to have his own DVD set.
Personally, I'm kinda disinterested in :red: for my age when I've become more aware of what she represents (sorry Red). I don't like her songs, I don't like her dancing, she's much to 1943 to me. And what's with that Mae West voice? It doesn't match her singing.
:droopy:, OTOH, rocks the box!

This set was released in France and, sadly, features a few edited cartoons (if I recall, the edited cartoons included "Lucky Ducky", "Droopy's Good Deed" and "Henpecked Hoboes"). It also doesn't include "Uncle Tom's Cabana" or "Half Pint Pgymy".

A friend of mine purchased one of these set from eBay & he had this to say...
I also bought the 'official' Tex Avery DVD set. Not bad, but none of the
track listings on Ebay are correct. It has none of the Lantz cartoons on it
and every auction lists them as being on disc 4!
I'm probably going to keep it just for collectors sake, the case is really
nice. But as far as the cartoons, it's just like the laserdisc set minus 3
or 4 cartoons. They cut out the non-PC cartoons and the Cinemascope
cartoons.

Wait for the R1 release, guys.
It's coming... Jerry Beck has hinted more than once that something is in the works for R1 SOON.
I wouldn't jump the gun and find out the hard way that the Tex Avery "official DVD set" that you bought on an e-Bay is A) an edited R2 release that ISN'T complete, or B) a lousy bootleg of the old laserdisc set released in the early 1990s.
I think the official R1 Tex Avery MGM set is something that will be worth waiting for. Just be a little bit more patient... :droopy: :wolfie: :red:

Oh, what I wouldn't give for a R1 Avery DVD...this guy is, like, my idol when it comes to animation. All the flipbooks I've put in my notebooks have his bouncy, exaggerated style.

Do you know if it will have unedited versions of Droopy's Good Deed & Garden Gophers? I was told they will never be restored becasue the origninals were destroyed! Any light on this one??

Were they Pre-1952? Becuase Jerry said all the orignal Negative to the Pre-1952 MGM cartoons were destroyed in a Vault Fire.
That doesn't necessarily mean, however, an uncut dupe or print of those cartoons don't exist.

That I don't know. I'm not a friend of Jerry Beck's although I've talked to him in e-mails and participated in forums that he frequents.
It's always possible as Leviathan said that a private collector has a print of the original version of the Droopy Cartoon you're looking for.
For instance, several Betty Boop shorts that weren't on the Betty Boop Definitive Collection put out by Artisan on LD and VHS turned up in private collections after those sets were released. :betty:

I too am very interested in what you mean. What does she represent? What don't you like about her songs and dancing? Would you expect the cartoons to reflect time periods other than when they were made? I'm confused about what you mean when you say that she's "much too 1943".
By the way, uncut negatives for Droopy's Good Deed and Garden Gopher were not lost. I have copies in my collection, as do many others here.

IMHO,
Red Hot Riding Hood was both designed better and sounded sexier than Jessica Rabbit, the obvious off-shoot of the original Red Hot.
(Red also doesn't sound anything like Mae West... If anything Jessica, sounds like a man...! Yeah, I know J.R. was voiced by Kathleen Turner, but still!)
I don't know what anybody could mean about Red being "too 1943."
Given a choice between a mush-faced femme fatale pretender (Jessica Rabbit) and the Classic (Red Hot), I'll go with the Classic. :red:
P.S. -- Red was better-animated, too. No question though that the redesigned Red Hot in "Swingshot Cinderella" looked better than Red did in her debut, "Red Hot Riding Hood."

I suppose I could be speaking in riddles when referring to :red:.
I will admit that Red is attractive, for a torch singer from the 40's, but call me old-fashioned when I say that I'd treat women with respect, and not like the wolf who went through those crazy takes gawking and oogling the chanteuse who's just doing her job performing for moderatly behaved, club-going patrons. I still think that her songs are rather corny. To give you an idea, I mute the volume of my TV when she sings. I do the same thing to Jessica Rabbit. Maybe it's the music of the period that I dislike. Who knows.
And for those who don't believe me that she speaks like Mae West, rewatch "The Shooting of Dan McGoo".

Actually, her voiced mimiced that of Katherine Hepburn. In Swing Shift Cinderella she was Joan Crawford. I guess Tex liked to slip in references to actresses he enjoyed.

Um, it's just a cartoon. Are you familiar with the stereotypical Hollywood wolf? That's all that the wolf in these cartoons is. I wonder if people have similar problems with the wolf in Bacall To Arms.

Well, didn't Preston Blair use a model when he animated Red in "Swing Shift"?

Well, didn't Preston Blair use a model when he animated Red in "Swing Shift"?
Nope.
He may have seen a nightclub act performance similar to Red's dance, but he animated that sequence out of his head. So say some books on the Tex Avery cartoons.
No question Blair was a great animator in his prime. The guy animated on Fantasia for heaven's sakes!

While it is disappointing that the original negatives no longer exist, that's no reason to say that these cartoons can't look good on DVD. It just means that Warner has to go a little further in cleaning up the surviving prints.

Do not waste your money on the Tex Avery set. I did.....some cartoons are censored because of the blackface gags. Also, even if there was a fire? That does not mean that only certain cartoons were lost, what about the rest? Do we really know for sure there even was a fire?????? We all know about the MGM Grand hotel fire, but what would that have to do with animation vaults??? For arguement sake, lets suppose the negatives were destroyed......There have been literally thousands of copies on 16mm (maybe even 35mm) for distribution to television stations or libraries. The cartoons were broadcast widely in syndication uncut back in the late 70's and early 80's. There should be plenty of excellent condition uncensored copies in private hands.

I have both "Droopy's Good Deed" and "Garden Gopher" in their unedited forms, but like you, my prints aren't the greatest. I'm sure there are nice cleaned-up prints already produced like the edited versions being broadcast, so don't fear...as to when they might end up on DVD, I don't know...:droopy:

I'm obvoiusly not Jerry Beck, but this is what he said on the Animation Show forums (Maybe he could clarify when the alleged fire took place, and the specific cut-off date for the destroyed negs).
And i would be really baffled if the Library of Congress didn't have at least a few usuable MGM cartoon prints

Not, trying to beat a dead horse..........but, if we think about this alleged fire? Why does it only affect certain cartoons with certain scenes. How was WB Europe able to release "Droopy's Good Deed" 1951 and "Garden Gopher" 1950 on the complete Tex Avery 4 disc set (blackface gags missing) if they needed the original negatives to do so? How did MGM release the complete Tom & Jerry set with pre 1952 episodes? Why did MGM not back up their negatives with duplicates? Do they really need negatives anyway to put a cartoon on DVD? Why not just use a 35mm or 16mm print? There are so many unanswered questions. I believe these companies are fearing the PC movement a little too much (which is an illusionary fear to begin with). Us collectors would by far spend more $$$ to get the material we desire than all other cartoon purchases for children combined. Just not convinced of the "fire" event. Maybe someday we will find out the truth.

Okay..........let me clear this up.
There WAS a fire at the MGM lot that affected the negatives to the pre 1952 shorts.
This does NOT mean that there are no complete prints of Droopy's Good Deed or Garden Gopher. I have copies, as do many others on these forums, that are taken from 16mm prints. Since 16mm prints were struck for TV use, it is safe to assume that there are several 16mm prints in circulation. Since there was no reason at all to strike 16mm prints for TV use before 1952 (as MGM cartoons were not shown on TV then) we can therefore come to the conclusion that at least one 35mm print was still around in 1952. Actually, it would be preposterous to assume that there were not dozens of prints in circulation in 1952, since these shorts were probably still being shown in neighborhood theaters.
There is no conspiracy. Edited versions of these two cartoons were used as a mistake while creating the laserdisc set.

I didn't say I didn't like any cartoons. Just the ones where bad things happen to the stars, and they can't get back at them. I mean, with all the abuse that Tom goes through just to kill a poor, defenseless mouse, you wonder why he doesn't fight back at the maid?
But this thread is about Tex Avery, and I happen to find scads of humor in his films with the exception of the "Red" character, who is probably a constant reminder that I don't have a girlfriend and severely need one.
