Although there have been some duds, I wonder who can recall the really bad ones. Dreadful series such as THE BEARY FAMILY and the Paramount GO-GO TOONS directed by Ralph Bakshi, Shamus Culhane and others come to mind.:audrey:

As much as I love the works of the Terrytoons studio, neither I nor anyone else can deny that they hit that particular mark quite hard with Luno the Flying Horse. :(

And let's not forget the Larriva Roadrunners. Maybe we can't be that harsh on them, after all, most of the animation I reckon was reused from the FAR superior Jones shorts, wasn't it?

Only in "The Wild Chase", to my knowledge, and that was directed by Friz Freleng. Although, the openings to each Larriva Road Runner used the exact same footage of the Coyote chasing the Road Runner.

Dreadful series such as THE BEARY FAMILY
Earlier ones, mostly featuring Goose, was pretty good, although I agree it went downhill in the later years.
Anyway, WORST theatrical cartoon? I think that honor goes to DePatie-Freleng's "The Dogfather".

I nominate 1960s Looney Tunes the absolute WORST decade for the classic characters (which may be eclipsed by the upcoming piece of crappitude, "Loonatics").
Probably the worst cartoons featuring :bugs2: :daffy: :tweety: :sylvester :befuddled :speedy: :beepbeep: :coyote: and new "classics" like Bunny and Claude were produced during this era.
Who can forget the "classic pairing" of :daffy: and :speedy: ! Pure genius, I tells ya! :shame:
I'm not one to say that the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s Looney Tunes were great shakes either, but it was clear that after 1960, the original LT directors were retired or PLAIN tired with the way their output quality declined.
I don't think even Chuck Jones directed anything memorable after "The Grinch." I certainly didn't think any of his theatrical shorts past 1959/1960 were anything to write home about.'
Seems pretty much the case for Freleng, too.
As for Popeye, I'm biased. I'm gonna admit that I don't particularly care for Popeye cartoons that I've seen made past 1940... Popeye seemed to be better in black-and-white, and even Fleischer it seems lost its way with their most popular star in the early 1940s from what I've seen and can remember.

If I had to go strictly with the WORST animated series I've seen on DVD recently, it'd be Mel-O-Toons.
Just sitting through one of those on a DVD I recently bought made me fastforward through the other Mel-O-Toons shorts on that disc!
And I thought Baby Looney Tunes were bland enough...!

The title of this thread says "worst short", but everyone seems to be mentioning series, so I'll go with Max Fleischer's "Color Classics". Pass the Pepto!

The GABBY series was far worse. There was also a series of one shots and a few returns using other GULLIVER characters such as Twinkletoes and also the Three Spies, SNEAK, SNOOP, and SNITCH. These were pretty horrible. too.
But one of the worst in the series was a one shot call BIG HIMSELF BACK ALIVE.
Details on this can be found in The Big Cartoon Database in case there is :sailor: interest.

Yes, and who could forget that the Great Lost Famous Studios B&W Short would have had Gabby and Shorty land in that "Happy Birthdaze" furnace instead, both armed...!
(Hey, if you want to talk closure, that'd be it!!) :D

I read the synopsis. That sounds so bizarre I actually want to see it now!

If your interest is in BRING HIMSELF BACK ALIVE, I can tell you that the best gag in the cartoon comes when the egotistical lion comes strutting through the jungle and looks up and sees a peaked-looking monkey. The lion roars, "I'm king of the jungle, what's with you?" The poor little monkey answers, "Well, I've been sick!"

As far as series go, I hated Herman and Katnip. Yuck!

worst toon short there are many, top is for me 'SPACED OUT BUnny"
poory animated and filmed (this was made in the CBS 70's Special area, were the threw the short together and see if it flew).
on a series, i say hands down BAby LT, that show is Awful, as well as
the Filmations mistake "the tom and Jerry comedy hour" (79-81, and yes it premired in 79, found an old comic book ad with the show premire on the CBS saturday morning line up). It to suffers from the same flaw that effects "Spaced" poor film and sound quality and animation.
Pass the pepto, rolaids, and tums as well as the barf bags..

I pretty much hate all the newer so called Cartoons on Cartoon Network. They are all pretty much garbage, with the exception of Family Guy & Futurama.
Whatever happed to Cow & Chicken, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Lab. Those toons were OK.

The same could be said of Cal Howard who left Warners to go to Fleischer's in 1938 and was responsible for some of the sotries for their worst cartoons, including the GABBY series. He also was responsible for redoing the structure of GULLIVER'S TRAVELS into a weak, Gilbert and Sullivan pseudo-operetta. I would have been interesting if the original concept which was supposed to have been heavier on comedy could have been done without Howard's output.
Then he went to Walter Lantz and did good work. So it may have depended on the atmosphere and the producers and directors he was working under. The same can be said of Jack King.
We can't be sure what the circumstances were that led Jack King to do what he did at Warners. It is most likely that his performance at Disney was better because there was a producer who communicated what he wanted in his cartoons and wouldn't accept anything less than what it should have been. That was Walt Disney. Incidentally, Jack King was an animator on Krazy Kat for the Winkler Company in the mid 1920s.:ham:
