Now Popeye is being drawn into the whirlpool. Check this out: (www.alternet.org/drugreporter/21206/)

Poor Popeye. First he's gay, now this.
Personally, I think these "satires" are getting pretty stale...

After reading part of the article, it makes he wonder: is this all because someone did a reggae song about Popeye?

Actually, with the Fleischers I'm not surprised. They injected SOOOO many racy elements into their stuff.

Well, at least the part about Bobby London is accurate.
You could wrap fish with the rest as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe Popeye was smoking Kryptonite, so he'd give Bluto a sporting chance.

What they don't seem to be mentioning is that Popeye never really SMOKED that pipe. He tooted it like a whistle, sucked spinach through it like a straw, spun it around and occasionally BLEW smoke, but the pipe is never shown lit and he never puffs on it. This whole thing is nuts, the supposedly gay characters, the inferred drug references and the stupid idiots who go along with them are starting to tick me off. Nobody goes after the gay superheroes on the SNL cartoons, South Park and Family Guy get away with all kinds of off-color humor, and in those, it's actually intentional. Here they are criticising a tame children's cartoon about a talking sponge and a tried-and-true classic about a sailor man who eats his spinach and then teaches the big fat dude who tries to steal his "goil" a lesson. Since when was the animated cartoon some big bad moth threatening to eat into America's moral fabric? Leave the 'toons alone, man!

Go over to Cartoon Brew right now, and Jerry has a post from Bobby London saying it's spinach, (http://www.cartoonbrew.com/archives/2005_02.html#000853)and adding that he told the article's author it was, but since it didn't fit his story's theme, he just left London's quote out.
Larsen comes off looking like a Bizzaro-world James Dobson here, though his infraction is actually worse, since he published a claim he had been told was false by the author himself. Dobson may see homosexual activism behind the drawing boards at Viacom, but paranoia is a step down from out-and-out lying.

The drug that would explain Popeye's behavior is PCP. Like Super Goof, who ate a special variety of goobers, Popeye's spinach would be a special PCP-containing variety.

What this whole thing amounts to is a certain group of people with no real sense of wit, humor, or imagination thinking up these things in order to gain the spotlight at the expense of those who did the work many years ago in full ernestness. These smarmy cheap shots are easierto invent than coming up with really original or truly amusing insights, which require real intelligence and talent.:sailor:
