I've recently noticed something on my LTGC2. Three consecutive scenes in "Gorilla My Dreams" seem to be blurrier and unremastered:

- Bugs taking to the trees as Gruesome Gorilla charges after him
- Bugs walking by Gruesome upside down and saying "You can't hang around here!"
- Bugs swinging into Gruesome's roaring face, then turning around and taking off again

After this, the cartoon becomes crystal clear again. Anyone else notice this, or have any idea what happened here?

This cartoon, unfortunately, has fallen victim to the DVNR process. DVNR is a process which removes "imperfections" in classic films but, unfortunately, cannot tell the difference sometimes between animation lines and actual scratches. So DVNR occasionally "blurs" a cartoon (as you noticed).

Are you sure that it's the result of DVNR? Because I thought that process only caused parts of the image to disappear (like the tips of Bugs' ears when he does the Russian dance in "The Big Snooze").I noticed parts of the vine that Mrs. Gorilla swings on seemed to disappear in this cartoon and I suspected that it was the only noticeable DVNR residue, because there were no parts of "The Big Snooze" that looked blurry, just parts that seemed to be missing.

See, what I mean is that, for those three scenes, "Gorilla My Dreams" looks like the TV print rather than the restored print. Does DVNR overlook certain parts of a film during restoration?

If these are the same segments I myself noted as being of lesser quality in the cartoon, you'll also note that they are all shots or segments that either start or begin with dissolves, or are part of a section that contains a series of dissolves; in other words, opticals. Effects such as these were accomplished by re-photographing the original film in an optical printer; these duped elements were then cut into the original camera negative. In the olden days, the apparent difference in quality between the dupe and original sections would have been rendered less dramatic as the images passed through the various generations from camera neg to the final projection print. Remember, what you're seeing on these DVDs is, as I understand it, only one generation beyond the camera negative; you'd never see something like that in a theater.

It's typical, in live-action films of this period, to see upcoming dissolves and fades "telegraph" themselves by a sudden change in image quality immediately before they occur. Montage sequences, composed of a number of separate shots linked by dissolves, would generally consist of dupe material throughout.

That's something I didn't know, but did notice. I'll have to watch the cartoon again with these bits of info in mind.

On the other hand, maybe this cartoon fell victim to the same MPEG authoring error that is in Book Revue. Anybody know for sure?

It's a shame. With the DVD version having DVNR, it seems we'll never get a version of "Gorilla My Dreams" that actually looks like it was meant to be.

I took a look at the cartoon and did notice the following:

When the female gorilla is carrying Bugs in the barrel to her home, she swings on a vine. Part of the vine appears to be "erased."

That's the DVNR at work.

Speaking of DVNR, I hope WB has been able to clean up the DVNR in the version of "Falling Hare" on the Bob Clampettt documentary when it is released on a future DVD.

Ditto. Fortunately, "Horton Hatches the Egg" doesn't seem to have any problems.

Actually, I watched that one last night and didn't notice anything wrong. Though it did seem to end rather abruptly.
