I was watching the DVDs I made of the Warner cartoons the other night and randomly chose a 1935-1936 disc that had most of the "Beans Gang" cartoons on it. Most are pretty bland, mostly because Beans himself was. But I'd forgotten how interesting "The Phantom Ship" was. Warner didn't usually do "adventure" cartoons...nor did they do Fleischer-esque gags with doors and things coming to life after the Harman/Ising days.

I uploaded the cartoon to Youtube (Shhhh...don't tell anyone!) and I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

Great cartoon, makes you long for LTGC No. 7 (wishfull thinking)

It's indeed remarkable for a WB cartoon of that time not coming from Avery's department.

I think that was the only Ham and Ex cartoon I didn't loathe. It's not great, but it's OK.

Fore pure WB adventure, I like Shanghaied Shipmates. Barely any jokes at all in that one, just straight up high-seas thriller.

Yeah, I don't really see anything special about this one either. It's a typical 1935-1936 Looney Tunes short. Albeit one that's a bit more epic in scope than most. And Beans, when all is said and done, is such a dull character that I have no idea why WB wanted to make him into a big star.
