I purchased this advertising display at a flea market in Delaware many years ago. It measures 12" wide at the base and stands 9" tall.

I've heard of hiring a magician or a clown for your kid's birthday party but I never heard of renting home movies.

Was this a common event in the days before families had video machines?

Not that common, but obviously some families who could afford it, did this.
It wasn't something that most people would offer for a children's party, however. I recall reading in the book, THE MAKING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ that Margaret Hamilton had a children's party some time in the early 1940s and they ran a print of THE WIZARD OF OZ. That was nearly 70 years ago.
