I've been reading some comments in recent posts, as well as the Wikipedia page for Daffy Duck's Quackbusters, and I've been wondering, did The Duxorcist debut in Daffy Duck's Quackbusters, or was it released theatrically with a different movie? I often read about it being Warner's first new short in years, and it's a bit hard to consider it that if it originated as part of the story of a movie, only to later be cut and shown on TV as a stand-alone short.

"The Duxorcist" has a release date of 1987, and Daffy Duck's Quackbusters came out in 1988. So my guess is that Ford and Lennon made the short, then took the concept and made a whole compilation feature out of it, then decided to incorporate the short into the movie.

You're right, J. B. The DUXORCIST short was released to theatres as a stand-alone in 1987, appearing before feature films in the style of traditional animated shorts.

So what feature film did The Duxorcist appear before?

I forgot about the fact that The Duxorcist came out in 1987 instead of 1988. I guess it's safe to assume that Night of the Living Duck was released with Quackbusters, though wikipedia claims that it came out a day before Quackbusters. I don't really know what that's all about.
And interestingly, it seems like The Duxorcist is the only short inincorportated into the plot of Quackbusters to be shown with the original iris-out at the end. The iris-out is edited from other shorts in the movie.

IIRC, both "Claws for Alarm" and "The Abominable Snow-Rabbit" also have iris-outs in the movie.

IMDB says The Duxorcist was released with a film called "Nuts".

And it was made to celebrate Daffy's 50th birthday (back when WB actually acknowledged such things).

Well, that explains everything.

A Looney Tune with an R-rated film? I know they were originally made for adults but...I'm skeptical.

I added that on IMDB years ago. It was the only Warner movie that was released the day The Duxorcist apparently went out to theaters, so I just went by that.
A few things to note, though: Siskel and Ebert actually reviewed the short on their show (http://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/atm/reviews.html?sec=6&subsec=The+Duxorcist I hope that works...) and said that the short was only playing in 5 theaters in NYC and 1 in LA. I have come to assume those 6 theaters played it with Nuts for the sake of Oscar consideration. I mean, even Daffy Duck's Quackbusters got an extremely limited release, Box Office Mojo doesn't even have any info on it.
I have also heard (I believe from a Greg Ford interview) that WB just sent the short to theaters and let them play it before any movie the theater wanted. So who really knows. :daffy:
