Anyone out there in InternetLand with a favorite Scrappy cartoon produced by the Charles Mintz/Screen Gems cartoon studio in the 1930s and early 1940s?:crow:

BATTLE OF THE BARN (1932)— no question.

The combination of extremely high energy, goofy Dick Huemer humor, and one of Joe De Nat's best scores makes for a real classic. It never stops moving, and it uses its early 1930s cartoon design to its advantage, too. The story of a giant kid-on-kid brawl would be unpleasant if drawn realistically; but as Paul Etcheverry and Will Friedwald put it (http://www.scrappyland.com/animania2.htm), "this waterloo of slingshots, rocks, and spitballs [stars] the ugliest, shabbiest, most ridiculous looking band of runts imaginable."

Just about all the first-year Scrappys are good, though. The production team had come right off of the wild Toby the Pup series, and one can immediately tell.

The early ones are great.

My favorite might be Minding The Baby. I actually like Oopy (Oopie, Poopsie, or Vonzey) better. What a brat!

Other ones I like:
Yelp Wanted, The Little Pest, The Dog Snatcher, Treasure Runt, Railroad Wretch, and Bad Genius.

I've seen Battle Of The Barn but it hasn't stuck in my head.

I've only seen two Toby The Pups and I'd like to see more.

If you haven't visited Scrappyland (http://www.scrappyland.com/) you should take a peak.

Here are my favorite Scrappy cartoons.

The Dog Snatcher
Battle Of The Barn
Yelp Wanted

Basically any of the Huemer era shorts from 1931 to 1933 are quite good.

The Flop House and Let's Ring Door Bells are a couple of faves. I'm pretty sure my wife would vote for Holiday Land.

OK, I will concede that THE BEER PARADE is one fine, funny cartoon. Y'know, the one with little children getting bombed and Prohibition being represented by a big ugly hook-nosed Jew caricature... C'mon, that's gold!

I started collecting 16mm prints of the Scrappys in the early 80's after reading a great article in Mindrot (later animania)....

My favorites are:
Scrappy's Art Gallery ('can we see our picture pleeeeeze??!?')
Sunday Clothes
Battle of the Barn
The Bad Genius
The Flop House
Puttin' out the Kitten
The Wolf at the Door
The Dog Snatcher
(I like almost all of 'em... I ran a 5 hour marathon once and bored my good friends with some really BAD ones)

That bootleg you see around of a bunch of 'em is familiar to me....maybe someday Columbia will release them.

Holidayland (for totally other reasons than the others...)

It seems that the really early entries in this series had sort of a Max Fleischerist feel to them.

It seems that the really early entries in this series had sort of a Max Fleischerist feel to them.Probably because of Dick Huemer, Art Davis who were Fleischer alumni.

Not that I've yet seen more than a tiny handful of those ... but based on the available evidence (such as it is), Scrappy sure got a lot of pure pleasure from beating the crap out of Vontzy, didn't he?

May be politically incorrect but it's a very typical thing.

A couple of them come to mind.

THE FLOP HOUSE: I like the ones when Scrappy assumes roles that would otherwise be strictly for adults. But then again what kid hasn't dreamt of someday running a flop house.

THE LITTLE PEST: Very touching. Scrappy decides to let his little brother drown, then has a change of heart when he realizes he might get "the chair". So he selflessly saves his sibling, only to toss him back after the little *#%$@# asks for a drink of water.

I have to say "The Dog Snatcher". Very bizarre, especially the scene where Scrappy yanked the skin off of one of the pound dog in order to disguise himself to rescue his dog.

But then again what kid hasn't dreamt of someday running a flop house.Assuming kids know what a flop house is these days!

So he selflessly saves his sibling, only to toss him back after the little *#%$@# asks for a drink of water. :D I found that hysterical the first time I saw it.

I find Vontzy/Oopie very funny at times.

Yep, on quite a few occasions, Scrappy had this penchant for beating up or slugging poor little Oopie/Vonsey.:)
