So they've finally released Popeye cartoons on DVD? I didn't expect it to happen so soon!:sailor:

Cartman,

these are still PUBLIC DOMAIN cartoons, which have previously been released by VCI Entertainment and many other PD companies. A deal between King Features Syndicate (that owns Thimble Theater characters) and Warner Bros (that owns theatrical (Fleischer and Famous) Popeye cartoons) still hasn't been reached. In other words, Popeye is still in the same legal limbo he's been in for the last two decades.

Why does it appear that they're only available used?

These are the finalized, official silver-backed DVD pressings, right?

... or are these the same DVD-R versions Steve has been offering through Ebay for some time now?

Let me just add that this set is EXCELLENT! I have the dvd a week now, and I love it. I suggest it to all who would further like to complete their collections, and to those who would like to learn about and see more of early sound cartoons.

I have the Cubby and Popeye DVDs, and they're both excellent. The Popeye DVD is vastly superior to the VCI edition. It's great to see the Technicolor Popeye shorts digitally restored without the use of DVNR. The B&W cartoons are in good shape, especially "A Date To Skate".

I've also bought another Thunderbean DVD on eBay very recently - Felix The Cat & Rareties from the 1920's. It has a really interesting mix of silent cartoons, including the Aesop's Fable "The Black Duck" which has a strange but rather enjoyable soundtrack ("Wanna buy some ducks?")!

Well, OK, but do we really need to "dis" the VCI Popeye edition? After all, it still has Jerry Beck's input to recommend it. (And I'd still like it in any form.) :sailor:

I, personally, like both. The VCI DVD has Jerry's commentaries and the 50s Famous cartoons (which, lesser though they are, are still enjoyable in some ways).

The Thunderbean DVD has the better quality prints (and in progressive scan, too)...and the extra bonus features.

There are mastering porblems with both, though. There's that little bit of "Me Musical Nephews" which found its way onto Disc 1 of the VCI set (the full cartoon is on Disc 2 with the other Famous shorts), and the Thunderbean DVD utilizes PCM audio, whch somehow doesn't work right with my Power DVD software. The cartoons end up playing at double speed. Win DVD works fine, though.

But, beggars can't be choosers, right? :D
