Just got back from my local Big Lots and noticed they were over-stocked with DVD's all priced for $3 each. Several movies old and new from the major movie studios were in their bins. I spotted quite a few classic WB and MGM feature films from the '30's and 40's. I myself decided to buy "Battleground" and "Presenting Lily Mars". Now I have DVD copies of "Little Rural Riding Hood" and "Who Killed Who?"
I am going to set aside some time this weekend to watch the actual movies. Given the price, I couldn't pass on the opportunity to start adding classic live-action features to my DVD collection.

I remember at some of my local groceries, they sold some DVD's at 3$ to 5$ each. They are mostly 1-disc and are mostly from Warner.

Just received BEST FOOT FORWARD from Big Lots today. I noticed for the first time the two radio personalities on the cartoon on the disc, ONE HAM'S FAMILY, being Red Skelton's "Junyuh, the Mean Widdle Kid" and :wolfie: as "The Great Gildersleeve". Funny thing though, there was a racial disclaimer before the Vitaphone two-reeler THE KNIGHT IS YOUNG*instead of the toon although I found nothing offensive about it.:ysam:

If you like the Warners Bros. cartoon, "Malibu Beach Party" (featuring caricatures of Jack Benny & Rocherster among many others), look for the DVD of DANCE GIRL DANCE at your local Big Lots. The Big Lots here had several copies.

Sadly, it was a complete waste of time here. They only had recent-ish stuff from Universal and Sony. Just stuff like Van Helsing and Slap Shots 2.
It more than evens out, though, since I found the Image "Beany and Cecil" DVD sealed on clearance at an FYE store about two months ago for $9.88, so I don't think I really should be complaining. :bugs2: They only had just the one copy.

Picked up the DANCE, GIRL, DANCE and BEST FOOT FORWARD DVDs today. Also scored FLYING DOWN TO RIO, the first teaming of Fred Astaire & Ginger Rodgers. Cartoon is "I Like Mountain Music."
For Don Bluth fans, they had several copies of THUMBELINA.
For non-animation fans, I picked up a copy of Monty Python's AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT - which is like having a "greatest hits" DVD. Also snagged a film noir classic BORN TO KILL.
There were copies of two of Christopher Guest & Eugene Levy's hilarious "mock-umentaries" WAITING FOR GUFFMAN and A MIGHTY WIND - but I already own those.

Just got back from a trip to the local Big Lots, and they have got a few Warner Home Video cartoon DVD sets for $6.00 each:
Pinky and the Brain, Vol. 1
The Best of the New Scooby-Doo Movies
a couple different Super Friends and Thundercats box sets
a box set of 5 or 6 of those modern direct-to-DVD Scooby-Doo movies (Zombie Island, etc)
Just a head's up if anyone was interested. I will have to go to the other nearby Big Lots at some point this coming week and see if there are any other sets to be found.

Went to Big Lots today, though the only thing I almost got for a good price was "An Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Even Harder" for $3!

I just picked up all 7 DePatie-Freleng Dr. Seuss TV specials for $6, but I also had to buy the atrocious Mike Myers version of "The Cat in the Hat", since these were part of a 2-pack bundle. But, I would've paid the $6 alone for just the TV specials.

No such luck at my nearest Big Lots. Aside from one copy of Gold Diggers of '35, it just had the usual bottom-of-the-barrel old crap that stays in the bins year-round.

I went to the second closest Big Lots and came up empty. From what I gather from reading the DVD Talk Forum, it seems like some Big Lots have been putting out the Warner box sets early while others are waiting until later in July when they will mentioned in an upcoming newspaper flyer. I will definitely be keeping an eye on the local Big Lots stores this month.
Hoping to snag some more good, cheap sets before the eBay vultures snatch everything up.

At my nearest Big Lots, I picked up Pinky and The Brain Vol.2 for $6.00.They also have Anamaniacs Vol. 2..Would have got that one, but bought Deal Or No Deal and Millionaire DVD games for 4 bucks each.
Aside from the above mentioned, they have a lot of varied Series DVD seasons, such as:
ER
Drew Carey Show (season 1)
Wonder Woman (all 3 seasons and season 2 by itself-for the same 6 dollar price)
Dukes of Hazzard
Nip/Tuck
Thundercats
along with others ive probably forgotten..
Just remembered they had a Superfriends set as well

For the heck of it, I stopped in at the same Big Lots I checked out earlier in the week and they were totally cleared out of the cartoon sets (except for a couple Super Friends collections). Haven't seen the Warner live-action TV show sets yet in my neck of the woods. They had a ton of $3 single-disc DVDs from WB, though... including a lot of classic films w/ bonus cartoons.
The hunt continues.

Tried another Big Lots further out of town. They had a lot of Pinky and the Brain Vol. 2, as well as The O.C. and Joey (and a much better selection of WB deep catalog titles).

Jackpot at Big Lots today, they had dozens of TV show box sets both animated and live-action.
Between the two of us, my fiancee and I picked up the following for $6 each-
Animaniacs, Vol. 2
Pinky and the Brain, Vol. 2 (they had about 20 copies of this one, seriously)
Dukes of Hazzard, Seasons 3, 4, 5
Night Court, Season 1
Stephen King's Nightmares and Dreamscapes
Full House, Season 5 (don't ask :shame: )
Also saw tons of Dallas, Joey, Friends, Drew Carey Show, Animaniacs, The OC, Knots Landing, Thundercats, New Scooby Movies, West Wing, and ER. Looks like WB is really clearing out their TV show box sets. I didn't see any Wonder Woman, though.
I also found for $3 each, Fred Astaire's The Gay Divorcee (w/ bonus cartoon, "Shake Your Powder Puff") and MGM's That's Entertainment. Are there any other WB/MGM live-action classics I should keep an eye open for? I actually don't own many on DVD, but can't refuse at $3 each.
Not a bad haul. Now who knows when we will ever have time to actually watch them all. :p
If anyone doesn't have a Big Lots store around and are interested in any of those, send me a PM. The store isn't too far from me and I go by it on a regular basis.

I went to Big Lots to check out the DVD because of this entry. Most of the animation dvds I already had, but I did pick up some others. I picked up Scooby Doo Movies. On the inside graphics, Oliver Hardy is identified as 'Laurel' and Stan Laurel is identified as 'Hardy'. Do they not have proofreaders in the graphics department? Or are they all too young to know their comedy heritage? I guess if Scooby Doo met Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell, they would know if something was right or wrong. -Craig

Keep checking the Big Lots, gang! I have been following the thread on the DVD Talk board and folks are reporting that now showing up in the next DVD restock are $3.00 (!!!) box sets including Popeye, Vol. 1 (:eek::eek:), the WB Academy Awards Animation set, and virtually EVERY Hanna-Barbera set (including Huck, Top Cat, Jonny Quest, etc). Plus, some have posted finding a massive box set bundle of LT Golden Collection Vols. 1-5 for... $10. :eek::eek::eek:
I haven't seen this wave personally yet, though. Good luck!

Cool, I need to look out for that Academy Awards set, because when I bought it a year or so ago, I somehow got the version that only had the winners and not the nominees. Hopefully they will have the full set, not the lousy half-set.

Today at my local Big Lots I picked up Seasons 2 and 3 of the Flintstones and Popeye 1933-38 for $3.00 each. The Lady was just putting out some of the H-B stuff..Also Grabbed Family Feud DVD Game for 4 bucks..
Another Note:Several Years ago, I bought Flintstones Season 1 at Family Dollar for $20.00 and we thought that was such a great deal then..In fact, I started a thread about this September 9, 2005..
http://www.goldenagecartoons.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4248&highlight=Flintstones+Family+Dollar+%2420.00
So, while it took some time, I basically bought 3 seasons of the Flintstones for only $26.00 rather than $90-100.00..

Going by product listings on Amazon, all these sets are still in print, and still selling for the normal prices on Amazon. The only one that is selling for significantly less is Popeye Vol. 1, but it is still priced at $26.99.
I think the case might be that WB has bulk quantities of these titles and wants a quick and easy way to get rid of them. This does not necessarily mean these sets are going out of print. Usually when something goes out of print, it would say so on Amazon's product listings.

Well, my local Big Lots was a bit behind the times. They were still on the $6 box set/$3 single DVD deal. Despite that, I picked up the following DVDS:
Animaniacs Vol. 2
Pinky and the Brain Vol. 1
Pinky and the Brain Vol. 2
There also had 2 different copies of "Gulliver's Travels" for $1. I picked up the one that included "Alladin and His Wonderful Lamp" and miscellaneous shorts. It also seemed they included some TV episode from a show called "Wacky and Packy", about a caveman and a mammoth stuck in our time (or whenever it was made). Has anyone heard of this show?

The $3 batch has shown up at the Big Lots here, too. We were happily filling up our basket when the fire department evacuated the store due to a gas leak. I will be back tomorrow, I am hoping it's not all picked over.
I didn't get to see everything, but I saw many copies of Popeye, Vol. 1, the B&W George Reeves Superman TV series, Lois & Clark - Seasons 1-4, Tales From the Crypt, most of the Flintstone seasons, Top Cat, Wacky Races, Murphy Brown, a two-pack of Superman - The Animated Series and Batman - The Animated Series Season 1 shrinkwrapped together, and some Tom & Jerry bundles (Magic Ring / T&J The Movie / Greatest Chases in a 3-pack). All $3 each! That's all I remember, I didn't even have time to see everything!

BTW-Wacky and Packy was a "component" cartoon of ABC's Uncle Croc's Block, which lasted less than a season in the 1970's on Saturday Mornings..Was a supposed takeoff on Costumed Childrens Show hosts (which was pretty much out of fashion at Local TV Stations by this time) with Charles Nelson Reilly and Jonathan Harris as the stars..A waste of both their talents..The "Wacky and Packy" Cartoons have been on the 600-Giant Cartoon set recently..

Wow. I still I can't believe I bought everything below for $3.00 each.
* Superman - The Theatrical Serials Collection : All 30 Episodes From the 1948 and 1950 Serials
* Adventures of Superman (George Reeves) - Seasons 1, 2, 3&4, 5&6
* Superman - The Animated Series, Season 1 / Batman - The Animated Series, Season 1 (both sets shrinkwrapped together)
* Lois and Clark - Seasons 1, 2, 3, 4
* King Kong (1933 restored edition) < --- only saw this one copy
Proving that you can slap a $3 price tag on anything and I'll probably buy it, I also picked up:
* Tom & Jerry Tales, Vol. 1 / Tom & Jerry - The Magic Ring
* Wacky Races
* Dastardly & Muttley
* Perils of Penelope Pitstop
* Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm
* Birdman & the Galaxy Trio
* Space Ghost & Dino Boy
* Josie and the Pussycats
I also bought a couple extras of Top Cat, Popeye, Batman TAS S.1/Superman TAS S.1, and Flintstones S.4 for possible GAC prizes, gifts, and to donate to the local church's annual toy drive this Christmas.
They also had-
* Flintstones Seasons 2, 3, 4, and 5 (oddly most weren't in any sort of shrinkwrap)
* Murphy Brown Season 1
* Tales from the Crypt (didn't pay attention to which volumes they had)
The cashier also handed me a coupon when I checked out good this Sunday only for 20% off my entire purchase. So, if ANYBODY wants ANY of these titles, shoot me a PM. I plan to be back on Sunday before I go to work.

Jackpot here in Austin today. I went to both of the stores near me, and here's what I saw:
Animaniacs (Volumes 1 and 2)
Pinky and the Brain (Volumes 1 and 2)
Flintstones 1-5
Popeye Volume 1
Wacky Races
Dastardley and Muttley
Scooby Doo (3 disc package)
Tom and Jerry Tales/Magic Ring
Superfriends
Josie and the Pussycats
Top Cat
I grabbed Season 1 of the Flintstones and the Top Cat set for 3 bucks each. Apparently they got this shipment in today, and had a few Looney Tunes and Huckleberry Hound sets as well, but sold out of them before lunchtime! They gave me a tipoff though...they restock their DVDs on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Yes it was a spin-off of Friends... a terrible, terrible spin-off I might add.
Part of the problem is the show's producer believed that "Frasier" was a terrible spin-off, and wanted to make sure Joey didn't make the same "mistakes" that Frasier made.
The show was canceled well into the 2nd season.

"Frasier" was funny. It was on seemingly forever, and certainly smarter and wittier than "Cheers", the show the character came from. If "Joey"'s producer thought sophistication, good acting and longevity were "mistakes", then the show deserved to wind up as bargain-bin fodder. For the record I never understood the appeal of "Friends" either. It was a show with 30-something actors playing 20-something characters sitting around whining about random stuff.

I don't recall the name of Joey's producer (I think it was "Scott Silver" or something), but the man started out as a TV writer. A darned good one. Wrote some awesome episodes of Friends, and Just Shoot Me! But when he became a TV producer and executive, his IQ and judgement went out the window.
I believe what he said he didn't like about "Frasier" was how the writers made him too different from how he was on "Cheers". In other words, he disliked how the writers made Frasier Crane evolve into a likeable character (personally I found him obnoxious on "Cheers"). He told Friends fans, that they weren't going to make the same "mistake" by changing Joey Tribbiani for the spin-off. He was always going to be the same: Dumb and stupid. This is the main reason why "Joey" failed. The character didn't evolve or develope AT ALL. Another problem is just about all the other characters were morons as well. There were really no smart characters anywhere to balance things out. A show about idiots doesn't work, because every single joke revolves around someone saying or doing something stupid. That gets old quickly.
For the record I never understood the appeal of "Friends" either. It was a show with 30-something actors playing 20-something characters sitting around whining about random stuff.
It should be noted that when "Friends" first started, the only actor in their 30's was Lisa Kudrow.
The original idea of "Friends" was it was about a group of friends, just out of college, finally experiencing adult life for the first time, and are basically all at a crossroads; none of them really sure what to do with their lives. That was the original idea. But by Season 2 (when the characters really started to develope, and the overall show started getting good), the initial premise pretty much faded away.
I actually am kind of a fan of Friends. At least of the first 7 seasons. The final three were very weak, partly because the show started focusing too much on Jennifer Aniston's character (and I realize it's because she was becoming very popular at that time), and not enough on the other (much more likeable characters). Heck, sometimes I wonder why Courteney Cox even bothered showing up for the Season 9 shows.

I just spent an entire morning on a 100-mile round trip to the other two Big Lots in my area, and all I found was Popeye Vol. 1 and a 2-disc version of The Philadelphia Story. (The only one within twenty miles naturally didn't have any old movies or animation, not even the H-B sets. All they had were the same lousy recent movies as before--XXX State Of The Union, come on down!--and sets of "Joey." :rolleyes: ) I suppose I should be happy about finding Popeye for such a cheap price, but I was set on at least finding the Academy Award Winners set (the full version, not the single-disc version), and hoping to find a LTGC set.
Stinks, especially since I don't have the time or money to keep going back to these two stores.

I think most Big Lots DVD racks got picked dry during their 20% off sale yesterday. I am glad I was able to help out a few GACers, though. I will peek in later this week to see if they have restocked and can keep an eye out of the Academy Awards and Looney Tunes DVDs (which I haven't seen in this neck of the woods yet, either).
Glad you got a Popeye, though! Enjoy!

I know Jon is gratiously helping me with some stuff he picked up....but decided to sneak out last nigth to a couple of the Omaha stores. First store had TONS of Popeyes...so I bought several, to use for family, friends, and stocking stuffers.....they also had a couple Flintstones-a ton of season 2, and one or two of Season 3. And...the ususal bushel basket of JOEY....
The other store ALSO had a bunch of Popeyes....but a better selection of Flintstones (all but season 1) a couple copies of WACKY RACES, and a couple copies of JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS.....
That was yesterday....went back today (Monday) and NO Popeye's were left. And there had to have been 40 left yesterday between the two stores at 6pm.....and no Wacky Races or Josie's left.....lots of Flintstones 2.....but nothing else.
Find it a bit hard to believe that so many could go so fast when it was already past 6pm when I stopped last night. Makes me wonder...if perhaps there was a time limit set for certain items? God knows....still a lot of JOEY to be found.....and latter Dukes of Hazzard....
Guess I'm glad I got there when I did....and especially glad that I found OUT about it in the first place....AND ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY GLAD that Jon is helping me out a bit with a few things. (THE CHECK IS IN THE MAIL!!!!)
Wondering, though, if these stores could stand some close watching over the next few months.
But, man, how can you go wrong with B/W Popeye's for less than 5 cents apiece?

Thanks, Jon. The Popeye set is great, I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm actually pretty happy I managed to find one, now that the whiny daze induced by going through several miles of one-lane-roads-due-to-construction are wearing off. :o
EDIT: I do admit, I kinda feel guilty that I wasn't able to pick any of the Popeye sets up at full price so far, due to basically being unemployed for two years, odd jobs notwithstanding.

I wasn't expecting to find anything, but stopped at a different Big Lots today and they had apparently just put out a display chock-full of $3 DVD sets this morning. Lots of people were picking through it, but I did find a couple new additions for myself:
* Batman the Animated Series, Vol. 2 (only copy they had)
and, one of the titles I have been hoping to find at BL...
* WB Academy Award Animation Collection (the 3-disc version)!!!! :cool:

With all these cheap buyouts could there be a GAC contest in the air soon?;)
O.T. Will anyone keep an eye out for the two-disc of EASTER PARADE and report back please? Mucho Gracias!
Oh! And here's what I recently bought...
Ziegfeild Follies (with THE HICK CHICK and SOLID SERENADE as bonuses)
For Me and My Gal
Total $6.
And heres some good things I saw for $3 each.
Till the Clouds Roll By (official WB leading brand version)
Cabin in the Sky
The Last Voyage (classic Robert Stack movie much like Titanic)
Kitty Foiled (Ginger Rogers)
3 Astaire & Rogers films: Flying Down to Rio, The Gay Divorcee, Follow the Fleet
and lots of classic Hepburn & Tracey films.

After reading this thread I drove up to the nearest Big Lots. I've never been there before and never will again. The place is a dump in the worst neighborhood, lots of odd overpriced canned food apparently packaged for Canada and plastic lawn furniture and the only DVDs were Joey season 1, Night Court season 1 and a bunch of awful recent movies. Nothing at all to buy. I doubt they ever had anything else because nobody there would have the cash to buy it.

I was just at Big Lots yesterday. I picked up the following:
Popeye the Sailor Vol. 1
Wacky Races: The Complete Series
My mother (yeah, I'm one of the few non-adults here :p) picked up the following:
The Flintstones: The Complete Second Season
The Flintstones: The Complete Third Season
The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show: The Complete Series
Hooper (for my grandfather)
Also, if my memory serves me correctly, they also had one copy of "Space Ghost and Dino Boy: The Complete Series", "Super Friends: Volume 1" and "Super Friends Vol. 2", "The Best Interviews of Larry King" and lots of miscellaneous movies.

Since yesterday's newspaper had an ad for Big Lots advertising $3 DVD's, I decided to check out all 3 stores today. Needless to say, I made all my purchases at the first store.
The first one I stopped at had:
Flintstones Season 1 (about 15 copies)
Flintstones Season 4 (I bought the only copy they had)
Top Cat (about 6 copies)
Wacky Races (about 6 copies)
Josie and the Pussycats (2 copies)
The second and third stores I stopped at each had about 20 copies of Popeye Vol. 1, and about 6 copies of Wacky Races. There was this one couple I happened to see shopping around the DVD rack in both of these stores. At the third store, I saw them with a copy of Flintstones Season 2 in their shopping cart. Lucky them since I looked around all the DVD racks and did not see any Flintstones at all.
On my way home, I made a second trip to the first Big Lots store I visited and noticed that all copies of Flintstones Season 1 were gone!!! This all happened in about 2 hours! :eek:

I saw the ad in the paper and thought there would be hope of the store restocking the DVD section. No luck. No $3 sets left except for some Tracy Takes On, Larry King's Best Interviews and a few leftover $6 sets like Joey. I doubt I will be finding anything else here for awhile. It was fun while it lasted!
If anyone spots any of the following in their travels, I am willing to pay you back or work out a trade (I have a handful of extras):
Animaniacs, Vol. 3
Batman the Animated Series, Vol. 3
Batman the Animated Series, Vol. 4
Hong Kong Phooey
Jetsons - Season 1
Jonny Quest - Season 1
Pinky and the Brain, Vol. 3
Powerpuff Girls - Complete Series (10th Anniversary Ed.)
Samurai Jack Seasons 1-3
Superman the Animated Series, Vol. 2
Superman the Animated Series, Vol. 3
Wonder Woman (Lynda Carter) - Complete Series

Even though I can't say I am now a huge fan or even that it's a great show, but I was pleasantly surprised with the Wacky Races DVD set. After suffering through the 1970's Saturday Morning Cartoons set recently, it was nice to see WR actually had some clever humor and a fast pace. Paul Winchell definitely steals the show as Dick Dastardly. The bonus features are very entertaining/informative as well, I especially enjoyed the commentaries by Earl Kress, Scott Shaw, Iwao Takamoto, and Jerry Eisenberg. Worth the 3 bucks.

Lois and Clark Seasons 1 and 3 for $3.00 (Best Buy is still selling these for $49.99!)
Wacky Races
ER season 7
No matter what store, they always have plenty of "Joey"..Lots of Top Cat and Flintstones season 1, 2, and 3..In Alliance, Ohio Big Lots they had several copies of "Looney Tunes Movie Collection" for $10.00..Also saw Josie/Pussycats and Dastardly and Muttley(Almost got it, but I like Penelope Pitstop better..Hoping to see that one at some point..)

I managed to find a copy of Flintstones Season 5, and I didn't hesitate to grab it as it was the only one. Yeah, I have heard reports of this one showing up among the $3 sets, but it isn't as widespread as some other titles. It all varies by store. It seems nearly every store is getting a decent amount of some titles (Popeye, Flintstones, the Superman stuff) and the rest is coming in totally random assortments.

(Well, that stands to reason considering how the set only came out earlier last year, but still...)
Speaking of which, Most of the sets that Warner is dumping at Big Lots apparently have sold well, like the Flintstones and Animaniacs/Pinky and the Brain sets. Warner just manufactured lots of DVD's.

Well, never say "not" ... but I was just dwelling on the fact that it went for close to $100 in the first place. That'd kind of take the Powerpuff set out of the same league as **cough** "Joey" or "The Dukes of Hazzard."

I've been keeping tabs on the closest Big Lots, and while this one hasn't yet had anything anyone was looking for, they did start getting in the animated stuff last Thursday. They had a ton of Popeye. Problem is, it was all gone by Friday, and they were back to only having "Joey," "The Dukes Of Hazzard," "Tracy Takes On," and about a zillion copies of various terrible recent movies.
Someone turned in a bunch of the Popeyes to FYE on Saturday (they suddenly had three copies used, which they're selling for $41.99 each... what a deal :rolleyes:), which makes me suspect the reason these are selling out so fast is that a lot of people may be buying them purely for resale and a quick profit. Even at the terrible prices stores like FYE offer customers for used stuff, if you're only paying $3 to $6 a set, you're probably still going to make a modest profit. (You'd do better selling them yourself online, of course, but somebody who wants quick money might not think of that.)

Slim pickings today, but I did manage to find Kitty Foyle ($3) and Wait Till Your Father Gets Home ($6...leftover from the first wave of box sets, I guess), though. The only copies left of each. For $3 sets all they had left were about a dozen copies each of Tracy Takes On and The War at Home. Everything was still pretty well picked over.
I got Wait Till... more for curiosity's sake than anything else. I have heard it has aged horribly (I was surprised when it managed to get a DVD release in the first place).

All week I have been stopping by the nearest Big Lots on my way home from work. It looks like they have been picked dry. All they really have left on the shelf are a bunch of copies of Looney Tunes Movie Collection. It does not surprise me that title isn't selling with the $10 price tag.
However, I have been informed that all 3 stores in my area get delivery tomorrow. So, I'll keep stopping by on a daily basis at least through this weekend. I just hope that they get some more of those H-B sets since I haven't even seen half of the titles reportedly seen at Big Lots stores nationwide.

Gumby Essentials (is that any good?)
I highly recommend it. It is a pretty good sampler collecting some of Gumby's best shorts from the 50's, 60's and 80's. Although I am not a particular fan of the 1980's revival, they do hold some nostalgic value for me when I watched them on TV in kindergarten. Also, the 50's episodes on that disc are restored to their original 11-minute format. Previously, all 50's episodes had been split up into two separate stories, with many of them having footage that overlapped from one to the other. Also, all 50's and 60's episodes are restored transfers with their original audio tracks.
Here are all the details of the DVD
1950's episodes
Robot Rumpus
Too Loo
Rain Spirits
In the Dough
The Racing Game
1960's episodes
The Groobee
Hidden Valley
Ricochet Pete
The Small Planets
Gumby Crosses the Delaware
1980's episodes
The Wild Horse
The Knight Mare
Goo's Pies
Too Bee or Not to Bee

Remastered Pilot episode "Gumby on the Moon"

Oh, man...I'd hate to think of the three sets I bought as "hot" or "illegal". I can see Warner's side of this. "Destroy" does not mean "resell for personal gain".
However, it does raise the question of why Warner would want them destroyed in the first place. They are not defective. I'm no conspiracy theorist, but the whole thing smells fishy on all sides. Why would Warner want so many DVDs destroyed when they could still stand to make a profit from them, and why would Big Lots not do their homework before buying them from the company assigned to destroy them?
On the bright side, I'm sure it introduced Hanna-Barbera to a whole new generation of kids.

Brain: "While that would be amusing, no, I requested that they sell OUR subliminally doctored DVD sets to bargain outlet retailers, so that it may reach the maximum number of consumers. At three dollars per unit, no bargain-hunter in any income bracket can resist buying even the most banal of entertainment! Even...I shudder to think...Josie and the Pussycats or the Dukes of Hazzard! Not gonna, nope, I'm not gonna. DEFINITELY not bring up the Josie and the Pussycats or Pebbles and Bamm Bamm sets either...as they'd probably have me committed...even when I found them for $3.
I do feel for WB in getting burned...but, as a customer who bought with confidence from the stores...WE didn't do anything wrong.
Be interesting to see if the remain stuff that's dribbling out secretly disappears for good.
Maybe this explains the look at the clerks' faces when I asked about any inventory in the back room. You'd have thought I'd just asked her what aisle had the edible babies....

The only difference between this and the zillion's of other attempts to play big corporations for chumps is that these people got caught. Which speaks volumes about the stupidity involved in this.
Did IWMB not expect Warner to find out about this, especially afters Big Lots nationwide are suddenly stocking WB catalog material? Were they not counting on the internet to light itself on fire trying to take advantage of all of the crazy bargains? I just can't fathom this.
I'm a little pissed off that I probably won't save $47 on the complete Powerpuff Girls set, and slightly relieved that the future of LT and Popeye is probably not as grim as the Big Lots sales let on.

Looking for any HB stuff besides Flintstones 2, Top Cat, Huck Hound and Josie & The Pussycats.
I think our stores get trucks in on Wednesdays, so I'll be making the rounds tonight. Anything anyone is looking for, let me know.
I pretty much fully expect these to still be trickling out on schedule for the immediate time being.
You people and this whole country sicken me. These corporations have us by the balls on everything, and you people 'feel bad' because you may have gotten some of these asses' overstock 'illegally', that was destined to be destroyed?
I can't tell you how many times this happens with film - some rental outfit gets told to bandsaw the prints (i.e., literally put them through a bandsaw, cutting the film in half), and tons of treasures get destroyed. True, a lot of them are dupes and/or faded, but I watched in horror once as a ton of IB Disney and Lantz shorts/features got bandsawed. Thank christ the girl doing it let me slip her a twenty and I saved a couple of reels of really nice stuff.
So the hell you, Warner pigs. For the sheer volume of stuff they sold, I bet these IWMB guys are laughing all the way to the bank over only a 10 million dollar lawsuit.
BTW, if anyone gets an extra Flintstones S1 or the original Jetsons, let me know. Three bucks each is about all I'd pay for that garbage just for reference copies.

I made my rounds to all 3 area stores today and two of them had restocked, while the one closest to me has done absolutely nothing to address the issue that half of their DVD space is vacant.
The cashier at the first store told me that they actually restocked last night, and that they also received a new shipment today that is still sitting in the back unopened. I could tell they were a little behind since last weekend, I saw many of the $6 DVD sets that have vanished from the other two stores, and well, this store didn't seem to have as much space to display DVDs. At this store, I picked up a few that I hadn't seen previously as well as a few extra copies of sets I bought last weekend. They also had a copy of LTGC vol. 6 for $10. I passed on buying it. Also, behind the service counter, I saw a boxed set of LTGC vols. 1-5, which was probably being held for another customer. At this store I bought:
The Flintstones Seasons 4, 5, 6 (I got the only copy of Season 6 they had. The copies of Seasons 4 and 5 I bought are extras)
Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm :shame:
Top Cat (This is also an extra . They had about 15-20 copies)
Wacky Races (Yet another extra. They had about 10 copies)
At the second store I went to, they had also restocked the shelves, but the cashier told me that all the DVD's they have were out, so nothing was sitting in the back of the store. At this store I bought:
Dastardly and Muttley (I bought two copies)
Space Ghost and Dino Boy (I bought two copies)
And the last store I stopped at (the one closest to my house), had not restocked yet. Hopefully tomorrow when I go they will have more DVD's out.
To sum things up, I have extra copies of the following (but just one of each):
Dastardly and Muttley
The Flintstones Seasons 4 and 5
Space Ghost and Dino Boy
Top Cat
Wacky Races
I hope to find the following this weekend:
Birdman and the Galaxy Trio
The Flintstones Seasons 2 and 3
Huckleberry Hound
Jonny Quest
Penelope Pitstop
I passed on buying extra copies of "Josie and the Pussycats" and "Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm", but I can easily get extras if anyone would really like to trade for them. This weekend I will report back on my progress.

That's NOT All Folks!
OK ... since this thread does have some juice yet left in it, I'll stir in one more request:
If anyone has managed to salt away an extra copy of Adventures of Superman Season 1 and/or Season 2, please PM me immediately! Much obliged.

More proof that WB are idiots. Instead of ordering them to be destroyed, they could have just let them sell them cheap anyway. No, actually that would have made too much sense.
What bothers me is that WB didn't see this coming at all. Are they THAT trusting/gullible?

Nothing new to report from my neck of the woods. One thing is for sure, Joey DVDs seem to multiply faster than rabbits :bugs1:. I swear there are more on the rack every time I visit.
Well, if this really is the end of the BL party, then I must say I am happy with my haul. I am glad I could save a few classic cartoon sets from the shredder. ;)

I'm still looking for Flintstones 5 and 6. Didn't pick up any extra copies of anything to trade, but I'm willing to reimburse purchase price and pay for shipping. Anybody willing to help?

I just got back from making my rounds to the stores in my area yet again. The store closest to me finally did restock their shelves, but they didn't receive much this week. All they received was about a dozen copies each of "The Flintstones" Seasons 2 and 3. Needless to say, I grabbed two copies of each, so from the post I made a couple of days ago, you can cross those off my wishlist and move them to my list of extra copies I have. While I was at it, I also picked up extra copies of "Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm" and "Josie and the Pussycats".
Oh, and I also am looking for a few of the $6 sets if anyone has extras. The only $6 set I have picked up is "The Best of the New Scooby-Doo Movies". But, people on the DVDTalk forum have seen $6 copies of "The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour", "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! Seaons 1 and 2", "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! Season 3" and "Wait 'Till Your Father Gets Home". Anyone who can provide me with copies of either of these will either get 2 of the $3 sets I have extras of, or a reimbursement of cost+shipping. Also, those of you that have a Five Below store nearby, I will reimburse you cost+shipping if you can get me a copy of "Hong Kong Phooey".
Starting Monday, I will start to look closely at everyone's inquiries about the extra copies I have. I will honor first any request to trade away one of my extras for one of the titles on my wishlist. But, if I don't get any trade requests by the end of Monday, I will sell my extras for cost+shipping on a first come, first serve basis.

they probably have more sets in the backroom but are too lazy to put them out until all the ones currently out are sold.....

While that might be possible, its really unfair to call them names..Give them a break..Plus from what I gather, they only put out new stuff once or twice a week..If there is more and its time to bring it out they will

Actually, based on what I'm hearing, because of the lawsuit regarding these sets getting out at all, they're not supposed to be putting them on the shelves at all. So, maybe they're just doing their jobs.....

While I doubt I will ever be able to sit through an entire episode, the Josie and the Pussycats DVD has a surprisingly well done 24 minute featurette on the life and artwork of Dan DeCarlo. Skip the awful TV show and just watch the bonus feature. :p

The weekend is almost over and the shelves at Big Lots are starting to look empty. I'm not expecting them to get any more DVDs this week, but of course I could be wrong. With what I didn't find, I am probably going to get off Amazon marketplace for still a really low price.
I am looking to sell all my extra copies that I picked up.
Right now, sales on the following sets are pending:
Flintstones Season 4
Flintstones Season 5
Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm
Space Ghost and Dino Boy
Wacky Races
The following sets are still up for grabs
Dastardly and Muttley
Flintstones Season 2
Flintstones Season 3
Josie and the Pussycats
Top Cat

All this talk of cheap Warner DVDs got me excited, so this weekend I went over the the only Big Lots store I know of in Hollywood. They only had one tiny shelf stuffed with DVDs of modern movies that I had no interest in. No cartoons at all, except for a few Christmas specials by Rankin/Bass.
I'd never been in a Big Lots before, and the place was pretty depressing. Really run down, with cheaply made junk lining the rickety shelves. Homeless people sleep in the parking lot at night, too. It made me feel like I was witnessing the decline of America.

That's pretty close to my own experience - the closest Big Lots to me is in a run down neighborhood next to the Social Security office, the place was full of sad looking people buying day old bread and dented cans of food with odd labels. They store was dirty and very unpleasant.
Last week I took a trip to a further away Big Lots, it's in a better neighborhood but still no animation DVDs, although I did buy some good 30s and 40s Warner films for $3 each including one of my favorite war films, Bill Wellman's 'Battleground' that includes a bonus MGM Avery toon. I gave up on searching for these discount DVDs and ordered Flintstones season 2 and Popeye 1 on Amazon marketplace for about $7 each including shipping, cheaper than the gas to far away Big Lots. That's pretty much all I was looking for anyway, no interest in most HB product (I've had Flintstone's season 1 for two or three years and still haven't finished watching it, so season 2 should last a long time).

Yikes. :eek: We must be lucky here in Maine. Both the Big Lots I visit on a semi-regular basis are both in larger shopping plazas and are generally well lit, clean and organized.
On the other hand, Family Dollar stores around here tend to be pretty run-down and depressing. :shame:

I miss these junky, odd n' sods kinds of stores. There aren't any where I'm living now. The Big Lots I lived next to in Utah always had a well stocked food section filled with some high quality items, not just bum food. But it also had a really lame DVD section, so it looks like each store "specializes" in certain products if the posts here are any indication.

I got through the whole thing. It wasn't easy, but yeah it was worth the three bucks just for the documentary.

Looks like things have returned to business as usual at Big Lots. I stopped in today while running errands and the only new DVDs on the rack were dozens of shoddy looking PD sets from our pals at Mill Creek for $6 each. There were still a handful of WB sets lingering around, but nothing of interest (Tracy Takes On, War at Home, Joey and Larry King). I did pick up some of the $3 classic WB live-action film DVDs that I have had my eye on for awhile, since I figured this may very well be my last chance for those.
I ended up with:
* Dames
* Flying Down to Rio
* Presenting Lily Mars
* Each Dawn I Die
* Till the Clouds Roll By
* Gold Diggers of 1935
* Dance, Girl, Dance

Nothing new to report in my area. The majority of the DVDs remaining are the usual $3 movies that have always been there. There were still a few copies of Popeye Vol. 1 at a couple of stores. One store still had about 15 copies of Wacky Races and another store still had about 15 copies of Josie and the Pussycats. Oh, and (surprise) the closest store still has about a dozen copies of Looney Tunes Movie Collection. Today was the first time all week I had checked all 3 Big Lots in my area. It looks like I don't need to be stopping by Big Lots any time soon. It is now time to actually watch all those H-B shows I picked up. For starters, I have decided to watch the Flintstones in chronological order. I just started Season 2 today.

The closest Big Lots no longer had any cartoons; they'd been cleaned out. Just the usual junk, no interesting old movies.

Judy Garland was never more beautiful than in PRESENTING LILY MARS. Not a bad film, really. It COULD have been a great film-screwball wise-in the hands of someone else: ala YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU. It's good...but wants so hard to be a whacky comedy....and JUST falls a bit short, imho.
But Garland is absolutely gorgeous throughout.
Why she never saw herself that way....and why Louis B called her his "little hunchback", I'll never know. For a time: 1940-1944...she was as beautiful as anyone in Hollywood...in my opinion.

Had some time to kill today, so I set foot in the Big Lots for the first time in a couple weeks. :p
I managed to pick out a few more $3 titles that looked worthwhile:
* Ninotchka
* Born to Kill (1947)
* Boom Town
* Little Caesar
* The Champ
* All the King's Men (Columbia)
The supply of classic WB movies is dwindling. I was hoping to find Follow the Fleet to go with the other Astaire/Rogers films I already have (did any of the other movies from the big A&R box set show up at Big Lots?).

At my nearest Big Lots, their DVD section is less than half the size it was a month ago. When I last went there, I saw nothing of interest. They finally did have copies of the "Seuss Celebration" DVD being sold individually for $3 each, but I already had bought it for $6 bundled with the Mike Myers version of "The Cat in the Hat" :shame:. As far as I could tell, these Dr. Seuss specials have not been restored. I even saw some very noticeable DVNR on "Halloween is Grinch Night".
And, I still have extra copies of Flintstones Season 2, Josie and the Pussycats and Top Cat that are still available for sale/trade.

I don't know if you've already seen them, but Ninotchka, Little Caesar and All the King's Men are all excellent! I didn't care so much for Born to Kill, but it is interesting to see Lawrence Tierney when he was young. Before, I'd only known him from his role in Reservoir Dogs.
