OT: The "Abridged Series" thread

So, has anyone on these forum heard something called "abridged series"? If not, the thing is that it's pretty much either a guy, two guys, or a group of people, etc, taking a show (mostly anime), and pretty much shorting it to 7 or so minutes, and in the process, putting in some humor, like taking the show's flaws and make fun of them in a funny matter.

And let me tell you, if done right, I think there's some really funny stuff in some series. It's even better if you love the show it's parodying. Yet, since I noticed no one has mentioned any of this (yes Fiber, I know), hey, why not?

You know, since you brought that series up, I have a confession to make. I honestly think that out of all of the mainstay abridged series, this is my least favorite, or the one that doesn't feel right to me, and this is coming from someone who REALLY DISLIKES the dub. Now, before you ask, I'm not saying it's sucks, heavens no (Rei's character, some of the jokes, voices are nicely varied, the Christmas video they did was great), in fact, I think this series is the "Terrytoons" of abridgment, I'm just saying that I honestly think they could do WAY better than what they're doing (just like Terrytoons). Here's some things on what I mean...

1. I don't know about you, but completely changing the character's personality just to make jokes about their stereotypical character doesn't feel comfortable with me. I mean, changing Minako's character to make blone jokes? Why?
2. I don't know, I have a "lol this show sucks, here's proof!" feeling around this series. I mean, it doesn't get any more overt than "Man, this show makes no sense!" Um, don't you realize that there's people that don't mind the show's nonsense? 'Cause it looks like some people didn't take hbi2k's advice...
3. Is it just me, but are some of the jokes completely lazy? Come on, explaining the joke BEFORE the joke? Making "actual dub dialogue" jokes like ten times? I know the dub sucks, but come on!
4. Why are there 5 writers, and like only one of them is actually a fan of the show? Because you know the old saying, "Too many chiefs would ruin the meal."
5. This relates to 2, but honestly, the thing about Abridged Series is that these are made by fans who are admitting that the show they love isn't perfect, so hey, might as well have fun with it. But with SMA, I feel like that they did because only because they want to, without understanding the things we fans (like me, not all of the fans) love about the show. I mean, for example, the thing about the jokes is that as out-of-context jokes, they're funny, but in-context, it doesn't feel right. I mean, honestly, how many fat/blone/bling bling/drunk/annoying voice jokes can we stand?

Whew, glad to get that out of my system. So yeah, while I find SMA pretty flawed, at least it's watchable and not really terrible. But hey, maybe I'm taking the show way too seriously or something, I don't know. After all, it's only an opinion. If it's worth anything, at least I can look forward to the "Day Of Density" episode. Here's hope they show no mercy on THAT!
