Bothering to listen to the first two parts of the first show, I know I have a lot to say about what Fred just stated and to go into context of the time he was doing these things, so I figured it was only necessary to bother spilling my guts to clarify certain things he said anyway since I felt compelled to do so!
First of all, in mentioning Disney, he mention Preston Blair as one of the "Nine Old Guys",. when in fact, he wasn't on of the Nine Old Men. I wouldn't put it past him for not knowing the actual guy's names or of other personal of the studio who have also worked at other places too.
Also, the Action for Childrens Television wasn't founded until '68, several years after Astro Boy was already out in syndication, but Fred thought it was around at the time he was doing the show. The subject of violence and the cultural differences is one subject that must've been hard for him to straighten out with the Mushi Pro guys putting out the show in the first place. Some of it is unanswerable questions only because TV of the day was still terribly confined and limited, the opinions expressed by local people were often overlooked in favor of not pissing anyone off as I've read. I found it amusing to think it's OK to show violence in a western a child may watch, but it's a no-no in a cartoon. This of course was how animation in the TV age came to be look upon as an electronic babysitter for the next few decades.
Although the beginning of Tetsuwan Atom in Japan was considered the first modern anime of it's kind produced (not the first for TV as another series called "Otogi Manga Calendar" preceeded it by some months), there was however anime produced before for some time, if only by remote studios in or around Tokyo, and often theatrically. Toei Doga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toei_Animation) by '62 had a number of animated features released and three of the first made their way to US screens such as Panda & The Magic Serpent (1957), Magic Boy (1959) and Alakazam the Great (1960). The studio didn't consider doing TV work until Tetsuwan Atom showed favorable success, which led to their debut with "Ken the Wolf Boy" in '63. As Fred had stated, studios began to sprang up during Astro Boy's broadcast, which led to the founding of those studios like TCJ (later Eiken) and Tatsunoko.
I had more to say, but I forgot now and it's already 7AM and I haven't slept a bit! Woe-is-me!
