After asking Steve Stanchfield if it was okay, here is the content of "Thunderbean's Classic Commercial Volume 1". Note that since there are more than one commercial for some products, I will put a small title that decribes the commercial (most of which I made up, some are already identified on the set) and will also identify if the commercial is in black and white. I should also note that I do not own a copy of "The Moose That Roars" so I apologies if I get any of the Jay Ward spots' names wrong.

Note: For those you who want to be surprised on this collection might want to skip this thread.

Honestly, it's impossible for me to watch old TV commercials without feeling like I'm lost in a time warp. I think I'll pass on this set.

I'd rather be lost in a time warp than to be bombarded by advertising of today!

I have the "Classic Commercials" 2-DVD set that Madacy Entertainment put out a few years ago..One of my first "DVD Set" purchases. While some of the commercials Steve has may be in this set..I definitely want to get Steve's collection..Nothing wrong with a "time warp"..Stuff like this is almost like a "time machine" effect..Looks like a good set..

nick - thanks for the dilligent work.

I wonder if anyone has copies of two old animated/semi-animated commercials from the 50's:

Bucky Beaver for Ipana
Fresh-Up Freddie for 7-Up (I had always heard that Freddie was a creation of the Disney organization)

Bucky Beaver for Ipana
Fresh-Up Freddie for 7-Up (I had always heard that Freddie was a creation of the Disney organization)

The Bucky Beaver commercials are out there. I have three of them (1956) on a VHS called "Cartoons Celing Commercials" [sic-Intentionally spelled "cel-ing" as in cartoon cel]. I got this tape through the old "Whole Toon Catalog" by Facets video, www.facets.org. The Facets site still lists a volume 2, using the hyphenated "cel-ing" spelling in the title. "Volume 2" also has Bucky Beaver, but is listed as "No Longer Available". I don't see vol 1 listed. My case for Volume 1 says "(c) 1991 Ed Finn" if that would help your search.

There are also 2 of the Ipana commercials (I think 2 of the 3 mentioned above) on a tape called "Best of Animated Commercials" that I picked up at a comic convention in the 1990's. There is no other identifying info on that package about where the VHS came from.

I'm happy to have the listing of the contents of Steve's DVD. I second the thanks to Nick for posting that. When I have the time I will re-watch my Thunderbean DVD so I can split up the contents list by chapter number for easier access in the future.

By the way, I also really liked Steve's feature of having the optional subtitles with studio and/or animator info for each cartoon, although I find it a little distracting to have the subtitle on screen for the length of the commercial. It would be nice to have the subtitle appear for a shorter time to avoid the need to "toggle" the titles. Something to keep in mind if there is ever a Thunderbean volume 2.

I vote for about ten more volumes of animated commercials. I'd be happy with materials of a quality far below Thunderbean's normal high standards, too.

Honestly, it's impossible for me to watch old TV commercials without feeling like I'm lost in a time warp. I think I'll pass on this set.

But you'll watch cartoons with steam locomotives, candlestick phones, songs about shuffling to Buffalo and references to Joe Penner?

I enjoy 50s commercials. People can see through the ridiculousness of some of them ("More lab-coated doctors in front of desks with bookshelves behind them smoke Filter-tipped Grazzits than the other leading brand!" "Ladies, want to make sure the King of the House enjoys the dinner you've cooked for him after a hard day at the office?"). And some of the animated ones are cute.

Commercials started losing their charm in the 60s. Maybe it's because they started getting slicker, I don't know.

The collection was an attempt to put out the first set that actually is (overall) pretty good quality- though I did have a few spots from old transfers that I'm not sure I could get again, and used what I had already mastered.

Thanks so much for putting the list up! I have a bunch of other things transferred already and have been holding them for a specific set...maybe even one detailing a certain design era or a collaboration- more on this soon. A few collectors were kind enough to lend me really great copies of some really rare spots, including those Disney animated Bucky Beavers (yes, some were made at Disney.....)

I guess for me it's more commercials from the late-70's and early-80's that I have a problem with (1978-1982). Perhaps it's because I was born in '82, and it's a little odd seeing how automobiles, music, computer technology, etc. have changed so much since then. But TV commercials haven't really.
