View Full Version : OT: The Most Shameful Question Ever

Note: This question is inspired by a Nostalgia Critic video I saw yesterday.

Okay, I know almost everybody who responds with "Yes" will probably want to crawl under a rock in shame. But here it goes: Did anybody here used to watch Mighty Morphing Power Rangers as children?

Okay! Okay! I'll admit it: Bulk and Skull made the show worth watching for me. They were actually a pretty hilarious Laurel And Hardy or Abbott And Costello-like duo. And the fact that they were supposed to be the school bullies made them all the more humorous. Their finest moment being the time, I believe, Bulk dreamed that they were both power rangers. And, of course, who could forget their theme music or those video game-like sound effects that would punctuate most of their actions?

Otherwise, there's not really much else to say about the show. It had such terrible production values that I have to wonder if it was intentional. The acting was cheesy. The plots were stupid. The fight scenes were made almost entirely of Japanese movie stock footage (with shots of the Power Rangers occasionally being woven into them). And so on. Yet, in spite of all that, I still found the show rather entertaining when I was 11 or 12. It was basically one of those shows you'd watch but not admit to anybody else that you watched. Which is kind of ironic since it was probably the biggest kid's show on television back in 1993/1994. It was stupid, cheesy, but actually kind of entertaining. If mostly because of two certain co-stars (mentioned above).

Are you kidding? Power Rangers is iconic for '90s kids like me! I certainly did watch it as a kid, and I'm not ashamed to admit it, because it brings back a lot of fond memories of childhood for me. Sure it was cheesy, but what the hell, it was fun to watch. It was a show that even now seems to be something of a common bond for my generation- for example, last year the theater department at my college did an improv show, and when a Power Rangers bit occurred, everyone laughed and applauded in happy recognition.
It's funny that this topic should come up at this time, because just recently I downloaded some episodes and watched them for old times' sake. I agree, Bulk and Skull were often quite funny.
To say nothing of the fact that Kimberly and Trini were two girls I had crushes on when I was too young to realize what it meant to have a crush, and seeing them again as an adult is even more of a pleasure. :o:o

Nope. Not at all. The show never interested me in the slightest then and still doesn't now.

Actually, Youtube even has a video series sometimes called "The Misadventures Of Bulk And Skull" and other times called "Bulk and Skull - The Inseperable Duo." I think it features every skit of theirs that ever appeared on the show:

Whether we may like it or not, shows like this were a pretty significant part of being a kid in the 90's.

Sure. I hated it, but I had friends who enjoyed it, so I watched it more than I'd like to admit. Just wish I could purge the screaming witch ('Rita', was it?) from my memory. I've heard nails on chalkboards that were easier to take!

I sure did. Only because I knew the Red Power Ranger was the best one...and really the only character I watched the show for. I was one of those kids that my brain was used as a minion to the TV. So I was also a sucker for the *ahem* "action".

I turned way far away from MMPR nowadays, but still brag that the Red PR was the best. :o

Those are two entirely different kinds of teams;)

I really didn't watch it at all myself besides one or two glances to see what the fuss was about.

I watched the show. I tried to avoid it at first. However, I had a few friends that enjoyed the show, so once Season 2 came around, I actually watched an episode one day after school. That was only the beginning. I became hooked on the show. A while back, I watched a few episodes on Youtube, and it just wasn't the same. While it brought back memories, I suddenly began thinking, "I actually watched this?"

Even when I was a kid and the episodes were brand new, I could tell that the fight scenes were not actually filmed for this show. Even back then I was able to spot the differences in the Ranger's outfits between the fight scenes, and the scenes where they would be morphed but not actually in battle.

It turns out that the fight scenes were sourced from "Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger" the 16th installment of the long-running Japanese TV series, "Super Sentai". I actually watched the first 9 episodes of "Zyuranger" on Dailymotion as they were available to watch with Engligh subtitles. IMO, it was a decent show, and far superior to the "Power Rangers" incarnation I grew up with here in the USA.

Maybe once or twice as a kid-but against my will. The afterschool program in elementary school would put it on for us sometimes. I actually watched "VR Troopers" and "Superhuman Samuraii" more often and willingly. THose were really weird. I also somehow got on a listing for a Power Ranger magazine as a kid because the company (wrongly) thought that it would make a good replacement for the no longer available Looney Tunes magazines.

Oh yeah-and one time in first grade my "Frienemy" and me did a bag puppetshow with the Power Rangers in the same mentioned afterschool program. I was Rita. He had two bags-one with lots of the villains on it and one with all the Rangers on it. I drew my own-so it stank. The puppetshow stank too-I think kids were throwing paper at us.:D

I love the spoof that Animaniacs did on it-"Superstrong Warner Siblings"

I never watched it nor was I interested, but I do remember hearing a lot of hoop-la over the show. People were saying that the show caused kids to be violent. I didn't watch it because I just thought it looked dumb.

People were saying that the show caused kids to be violent.

Aren't these the same people who watched uncut cartoons when they were kids? Did they grow up to be violent? Morons.

I didn't grow up when this was on, but saw one where a boy and girl switched bodies. In real-life high school, that'd be creepy.

Yeah, I remember that episode, actually. Until watching those Youtube videos of Bulk and Skull, it's probably been a good 14 or so years since I've last watched the show. But I can still remember several of its episodes. Such as one with Trini's cousin Sylvia getting tangled up with an evil circus clown and being turned into a cardboard cutout. I also remember how, at the end of every episode, there'd be some moralistic message by the power rangers ("moralistic messages" at the end of kid shows were rather common in the early-90's).

My brother is a BIG fan of the Power Rangers. And I did watch some of the show back as a kid. And we have (tons of) video copies of some episodes and video copies of the first two movies (yes, the Turbo movie). Did I mention that my brother also have plenty of those megazoids?

That's all I'm telling. And no, I'm not the fan, my brother is.

Sort of like the original Ultraman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNb7o6x7hEU&feature=related), which was more Of My Time. ;) (Note that the editing and pacing are not all that different from MMPR in its first couple of seasons!)

Being a child of ther 60's and 70's, I watched MMPR once.

Once.

I prefer the vintage Ultraman. Four Power Rangers do not come close to equalling Ultraman. And it was deliberately cheesy, in the Toho manner of the later Godzilla films. Funny, funny stuff! Great American theme song, too.

You might want to ask Coach Z about that since I don't have baseball gloves.
Er... on second thought, you might not want to ask him that since Coach dosen't own a computer nor do I think he knows how to use one.

Moving on.

Originally it was five, then it was occasinally six, then it was five and it soon reguarly became six.

Be that as it may, the original five will forever owe their existence to Ultraman.

(BTW: With credit as due, it appears Keith Paynter and I coincidentally referenced the same Ultraman entry on YouTube. Accept no substitutes!)

I never personally cared for Power Rangers..(I am past 50, and anyone who's known me here for awhile knows my toon interests)..Weird thing is, my wife got hooked on it for awhile and she was in her upper 20's at the time age wise..I had seen it with her a couple of times..I think the reason she liked it was because of the "so bad it's good" thing..

*sighs* I spent my childhood watching the very first network TV show for kids Howdy Doody. I was already a parent when the Power Rangers came along.

My daughter watched them. Her favorite was the pink Ranger. I watched them with her from time to time. I actually don't know why anybody would be embarasssed about watching the show. It was a lot of fun with gags that probably went over the younger viewers head, but I thought were funny enough.
