Hello! I'm not an impulse buyer, but when I saw these UPA-style cartoon backgrounds for sale on eBay, I took a deep breath and snagged them. I'm still a little jittery given the economy and all, and I've vowed not to start a collection (which would be the ruin of me)!
Can anyone identify the cartoons from which these backgrounds came? The seller, artist and animation historian Leslie Cabarga, describes the illustrations thusly: "The studio was probably Hanna-Barbera, but may have been DePatie-Freleng or another."
Click on these thumbnails, or to see full blowups with guide holes and notes, go here (http://www.ratso.net/background_blowups.html). Thanks, all!

They look like they came from a Freleng cartoon, one that explains economics.

Thanks Mr. Semaj! I got an answer from FluidGirl at the BCDb, which you can read here (http://forum.bcdb.com/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view&post=101049#last). "Studio" (titles mine) comes from an episode of "The Impossibles" made in 1966.

Well, the first background appears to be from a different production that the others; its registration is on top. It also seems to be from the 12th cartoon of whatever "BN" denotes.
I'd suggest looking at the 12th cartoons in various series that might be denoted by BN and seeing if it matches. Gerald Mcboing Boing I suppose might be possible; none of the art at

shows enough of the image of the backgorunds to see the episode production labeling.
(edit: after seeing the above message, I checked the 12th episode of the Impossibles, Televisatron, on YouTube, and it's in there. As BCDB is doing that thing where I can't access it, I'm not sure if that's discussed over there)

Great idea, Ted--thanks! Yep, I watched the episode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ro9AAX-o8c) of "The Impossibles". Way groovie!
If you can't get into the BCDb forum because of the type of email account you have, try gishpuppy.com (http://www.gishpuppy.com) to get around the problem. Someone on this forum recommended that, and it works with my hotmail account.

It's not an email issue; BCDB fails to work (aka, load the website) much of the time for me (probably more than half the times I try). I always assumed the servers were frequently down/bandwidth limits often get exceeded at the times of day I try the site, but since you seem to be able to access them at this time, I'm wondering if it's something on my end.

Ted: I've been using the BCDb steadily for a month now and have never had a problem.

I'm sorry to be so self-serving here, but I figure you folks are my best chance. The mystery of three out of the four backgrounds remains. One clue is the opera house. Here is a chronoligcal list of cartoons pertaining to the opera, culled from the BCDb. None of them are on YouTube, but maybe you might know some of these--at least enough to rule them out.
A Soapy Opera (1953/ :mighty:)
The Talking Dog (1956/ Walter Lantz)
The Plumber of Seville (1957/ Walter Lantz)
The Case Of The Opera Singer (1960/ Courageous Cat)
Drum Up A Tenant (1963/ Modern Madcap)
Dodo at the Opera (1964/ Halas & Batchelor)
Opera Phantom (1965/ Roger Ramjet)
The Phantom Of The Opera House (1966; Beany & Cecil)
The Opera Caper (1967/ Famous Studios)
Wizard Of The Opera (1969/ Winky Dink)
Pheline Of The Opera (1973/ :mighty:)
Thanks again!
