Looks like the same thing that is being done now with Scooby Doo, Garfield, etc (and no doubt what they'd like to do with Popeye and LT). Take some stuff that's already been released, only this time instead of a nice chronological/complete set, just slap together a crappy Walmart impulse-buy disc for the moms. My guess is everything on here (with the exception possibly of the complete episodes) is already on the two Woody Woodpecker sets. Anybody have any other info?

Has Woody boxed set Volume 3 been completely cancelled? I sure hope not!

Aside fron the TV episodes, this sounds like it will be very much like a Spotlight Collection as opposed to the Woody sets already out. I doubt that the shorts will be anything but repeats.

This can best be seen as Universal doing the best it can with what it's got under the present circumstances. If a lower-priced and (presumably) family-oriented Woody "spotlight" set will help keep the Lantz characters alive and in the public eye until/if the raw materials for a Volume 3 box can be rounded up (also presumably) from among the film collectors' community, what exactly is the problem?

I first thought this was the 1999 show. But if this is the original theaterical shorts then this dissapointing if there is nothing new in this set that is not already on the two previous 75 cartoons Woody set but I have not seen any news that the vol 3 has been canselled.

My impression is that they took cartoons directly from the previous two boxsets and made this compilation. The two TV shows might even be the exact same ones that were included in the box sets. Maybe I'm wrong, we'll have to wait for details.
I don't know that a Volume 3 has been "cancelled" per se, since it was never even announced. I think Jerry Beck recently said there were currently no plans for a 3rd set -- not sure there won't be one, just that it isn't forthcoming. Response for a third set seems tepid anyway -- I'm one of the few who would really like to have it, but most seem to not care. And I know there was a fire and all, but I am not aware that Universal has lost all their master elements (or at least very good copies of them) and would have to resort to copies from film collectors.

I wonder which Woody Woodpecker Show they're talking about -- the original one, the 1970s NBC Saturday morning one, the 1980s syndicated one, or the 1999 one (did that have new cartoons)?
At first I figured since it was TV Shows On DVD listing it, it probably would have little to do with the vintage TV show, since even the LTGC releases (for instance) have been listed under The Bugs Bunny/Looney Tunes Comedy Hour -- a title the cartoons once ran under, for one year in 1985-1986. But I'm glad to see there will be a couple of TV episodes.

I have no issues with these lower-priced single disc compilations aimed at the general audiences/family crowd (when chronological sets are available for us collectors). As Geezil said, anything to help keep classic characters in the public eye is a GOOD thing . In fact, I am happy Universal continues to see value in releasing Woody DVDs... maybe we'll see a Volume 3 box set someday. (While no master elements were destroyed in the fire, it is possible some TV/video distribution elements were destroyed and will be missing-in-action until Universal strikes new prints...).
[On a sidenote, what drives me crazy about TVShowsOnDVD is when they list news about Casper DVDs under Beany & Cecil (Matty's Funday Funnies). (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/shownews/Beany-Cecil-Mattys-Funday-Funnies/2293) It's always a letdown when I think it may finally be news of some sort of complete B&C set and it turns out to just be Classic Media's latest repacking of Casper cartoons.]

Just to clarify... This new compilation is indeed a "spotlight collection" using Woody cartoons from Vol. 1. It is not aimed at collectors - or anyone reading this Forum.
I cannot say anymore about it. :woody:
As for Vol. 3... it's possible. :D

Wow! Thank you, sir! I know its not a commitment, but I for one think that's great. I think these collections are very well put together, great cartoon selections, very nice packaging, good transfers. I would really like to see volume 3. :)

Good news!
The only thing I'm worried about is going through chronological order on the Woody cartoons. I just wish they would just skip the Paul J. Smith stuff and just release the ones not done by him.

I didn't say it was a bad idea. I just figured that a family-geared Woody wouldn't contain New-to-DVD shorts.

Mars
Africa
Radio RhythmI'd take MARS and leave out AFRICA if it were me—they share identical song sequences (with reused animation for Oswald), and the surrounding material is far better in MARS, directly foreshadowing PORKY IN WACKYLAND and THE CAT THAT HATED PEOPLE.
If I were choosing Lantz Oswald shorts for the new set, they'd probably be PERMANENT WAVE, CHILLY CON CARMEN, MARS, STONE AGE and TOWNE HALL FOLLIES.

Nick, that's the problem. I have the first two volumes and I'm not excited enough about the 1960s Lantz product to actually want to own copies. In fact, I haven't each watched all the Woodys in Vol. 2; they're stiff with uninteresting character designs.
If there were more of the 30s and 40s cartoons, and more of the cartoon-making segments from the old Woody show, I might be inclined to pick it up. If I were writing a corny Homer Brightman joke, I'd say the prospect of buying some Chilly Willy cartoons leaves me cold.

The Chilly Willys, assorted stuff, and certain Woodys are okay/fine. It's the Paul J. Smith films I would skip. Heck, if they put the remaining watchable Smith films (like "Bats in the Belfrey") alnog with all the remain Lovy, Hannah, and Markus directed shorts, we have a full content of Woody films for set three.
Granted, the Hannah ones range from average to good (according to the book "Of Mice and Magic", he said he got board there.), and I prefer his Beany and Cecil work that he did after leaving Lantz, they were at least watchable and attractive for a low budget studio.

Well I, for one, am looking forward to the potential Volume 3 Woody, no matter what director did the cartoons. The way Universal presented these films, some of which have not been seen at all on TV as far as my memory serves me, shows that they too are looking for a piece of the action that WB and Disney have with their respective Gold Collections and Treasures. If Jerry Beck is right and this new "Best Of" DVD is aimed at the children of "soccer moms" looking for good, non-offensive entertainment, then us GACsters should concentrate on the Volume 3 release.

Looks like a nice "sampler" of Lantz shorts to me. :woody:
On a sidenote, if anyone was curious, the two bonus episodes of The Woody Woodpecker Show were both included on Volume 14 of the Columbia House collection. So, if you already have the CH discs and the Universal box sets, you should be all set. :)

Don't mean to argue with you Dave, just my opinions. :) Theres just something about the pyramids joining in on Ozzies song thats wonderously surreal. Africa has the full Ozzie themesong, Mars but an 25 second excerpt, with reused footage. Other than this they are totally different subject matter wise and delightfully so! Theres room for both!! I do like your other choices , cept'n maybe Stone Age :D .
Thing is, I'm sure we'll be pleased with whatever Jerry and the other powers might choose. Lets just hope that they are really given the opportunity to do so!

Yeah another thing I appreciated about the two recent box sets was they were attractively priced for the amount and quality of content, especially after the typical Amazon discount. I certainly would have paid more to own them. I did notice the TV show episodes on this one-off disc seem to be different. Not sure it's worth the $13.99 Jerry mentions on cartoonbrew just for that, but it's not much of a stretch. I would also consider buying it to support Lantz.

I would buy whatever Universal wants to package for a vol. 3, thank you very much... even if it's 3 DVDs full of Paul Smith and Sid Marcus cartoons, because ANY Lantz cartoons are VERY hard to come by (but I would prefer 3 DVDs of Swing Symphonies and Oswald cartoons though :D ). The Universal library has almost completely disappeared from the face of television.
Hey some of the Paul Smith cartoons are funny (Heap Big Hepcat, Bats In The Belfry, Sufferin' Cats, Teepee For Two...)

"Tepee for Two" is actually a Sid Marcus cartoon (and, I agree, a very funny one at that:D ).
There's also the Jack Hannah-directed Lantz cartoons too, don't forget.

I would personally like to get a few more Andy Panda cartunes (especially Crazy House) and some of the color one-shots from the late 1930's (especially those directed by Burt Gillett).
As long as the set also has some Sid Marcus-directed Woody cartoons, I guess I can stomach the inclusion of more of Paul J. Smith's drivel.
