Is this the one where Radio and TV's source material was missing the ending and they decided to improvise? Becuase that ending is atrocious.

Yep, I'm the one who uploaded this (I was planning to post this on my blog, as a finale to my R&TVP season). It was taken from a UK PD DVD (I forget which one, but it's a reissue of a Screen Originals title which originally didn't include any of these redrawns).

Seriously, would it have really made a difference if Radio & TV Packagers just ended the cartoon right where they lost the material?
Move over, "Ali Baba Bound". You have some competition!

Course then it would be like the few LT's I hated seeing too often due to missing footage in their endings like 'The Daffy Doc" and "Porky's Five & Ten", this is a slight improvement from just having it end with Bosko getting blown up and that was it, but not good by any stretch of the word, but it's very awkward (like the switchover to the canned music and no sound effects for the end).

Thanks for giving me a reason for being thankful I've only saw about 8 of these R&TVP redrawns as a child from similar VHS releases we had over here back then. The entire thing is practically a lesson in bad taste in both execution and cruel intentions upon whomever thought they could make a quick buck on shoving these at the faces of TV stations desperate for any content to fill up their morning/afternoon slots (the kind of stuff that could only be sold to those markets in the botton 100, but obviously not the top 20/40 unless it was a real seedy UHF outfit in the 'burbs). I just get this impression of how EVIL these guys were, but I don't want to go that far to condemn these pieces of tripe like some AVGN rant, now that it's on the net, people'll now have a reason to see how bad some had it!
The only redeeming thing perhaps is that KPM stock library they've used in many of these (one Mutt & Jeff cartoon "Egyptian Daze" uses one side of the "Beat Incidental" LP as it's entire score).

Wow, that ending is messed-up! I like the use of the word "GOAL," among many other things. Imagine the addled Korean animators excitedly working on their precious few seconds of out-of-it footage. I can only hope they were pleased and proud of the results!

Makes me think of way too many 8-bit games that ended up using that word for everything!

Hey Bosko; that hot pink derby looks, like, soooooooo amazingly cute on you. You go girl! :p
Seriously, that was one of the worst looking redrawns I've ever seen (yeah Matt, I have to disagree with you). A purple dachshund? You definitely don't see that every day. And as for that "new" ending? Wow. Just wow. Especially when it switches to that canned music I used to hear all the time on Nickelodeon as a kid.

To tell you the truth, this was not not the first time I saw this mess-up version of "Up N' Down". It was on a PD tape that had some other redrawn cartoons from the same company. I bought it because it had a Terrytoon on it (Cleaning House). This was the same tape that had that redrawn Felix with the bad 70's music on it I've mention a while ago on this fourm.

Was it put out under the title "Cartoon Classics', and featured color bars at the beginning. That's how I saw these myself in the 80's!

I was trying to remember where I may've heard that music before but it could be that! Again, music you could only hear in commercials or promos during that time!

It was on an episode of Salute Your Shorts, and I think it was also during some of Nickelodeon's first party commercials (usually to denote a comedic/slap-stick scene) in the early-90's.

They probably got it from Associated Production Music anyway. Hadn't seen too much Salute Your Shorts so I didn't know. I often heard this music more in the 80's in one way or another.
That was great fun! I'm not sure it's the worst redrawn ever. I mean obviously it's no masterpiece – the colours are horrible, frames are missing and the whole thing winds up quite a bit shorter than the original, but I've seen worse. What makes this stand out from other bad colorizations is the bonkers ending. It was fun to see this and the original on Lee's site (I've never seen either of them before) one thing that struck me is how similar some of the scenes in this short are to certain scenes in the Disney Oswald cartoons.

Well...you told me so. I have to say though that this isn't the "worst" I've ever seen. If they had redrawn it with the original ending it would have been alot better but no. Now I need to make sure I never watch that again. EVER!!!:ysam:

Here's a redrawn version of Freleng's 1935 short Country Boy. This one isn't quite as bad as the Bosko redrawn (although that purple rabbit looks really macho! ). And, for "better" or for worse, the cartoon just ends after the B&W print is cut off (so there's no "weird alternate ending" like there was in the Bosko cartoon):
Dailymotion - Country Boy - redrawn, a video from ldglover. cartoon, cartoons, redrawn, merrie, tunes (http://www.dailymotion.com/related/x74jza_ups-n-downs-redrawn_fun/video/x4r1uj_country-boy-redrawn_family?from=rss)
In that case, are there any other cartoons on DailyMotion with weird alternate endings? I'd like to see a few more, actually.

The redrawn version of the Porky Pig short "Rover's Rival" has a strange edit. The part where the little dog says, "You can't teach an old dog new trick", is covered up by the sound of someone speaking (faintly).
Also, the Censored Cartoon page mentions the redrawn version of "Naughty Neighbors" having alternate lyrics to the duet between Porky and Petunia.

I apologize for bumping an old thread, but that ending...
OH... MY... GOD!
I wonder what Warner Bros. thought of that? Maybe that ending wouldn't be so bad if it were stand-alone from the rest of the short, so we don't have a jarring cut from the 1930s short colorized to a bad wobbly weirdly-colored ending that makes no sense and is animated like the Gene Deitch "Tom & Jerry" cartoons?
Maybe if this short were released on DVD (the original uncut black and white version), they could include that alternate ending as a special feature? I can see the title card preceding the segment now...
"When 'Ups 'N Downs' (1931) was colorized as part of a TV packaging company in 1973, the colorizers most likely did not acquire a print of the cartoon with its ending intact. So therefore, they attempted to recreate the short's ending, which is actually very different from the original." :D

Probably nothing. Hadn't they sold those cartoons by then? Why would they care about something they didn't own any longer? They got their money.

Well, by this time, WB owned the rights to the Bosko shorts again. I know they used a public domain print obviously at Color Systems, but I wonder how WB reacted to that alternate ending? Maybe they were all like "WTF?!" or something ;)

What I don't understand is why they had to redraw the B/W Popeye cartoons when they had the technology to computer colorized by then? At least we would have the original animation.

Here's the only colorization I know that has Felix in his trademark black:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50mVUAbkRKM
And at least this was also originally a silent cartoon, so they just added music and some sound effects, and left the caption cards/speech bubbles intact. It's still like watching an old silent cartoon, just with music and color added.
I also love the music used in this colorization. The music at the beginning of the short was also briefly used at the beginning of the "Everyone Makes Mistakes" story on "Three Sesame Street Stories!"

While many often laud over the Capitol "Hi-Q" library of the 50's and the legacy that has left in the hearts of the Baby Boomer generation, I often look to the KPM stuff of the 60's 70's and 80's as defining moments of the 20th Century!

I like the music when Felix is tinkering with that rake (very jazzy/funky). And I like that little rock tune he plays on his saxophone (as well as the music that plays when that guy attempts to play his saxophone).
In response to the comparison one of our posters made between the KPM music and the Capitol/Hi-Q stock music, I'd argue that the KPM music isn't nearly as memorable. The Capitol/Hi-Q music was fully orchestrated motion picture-esque music. The KPM music, however, is really just elevator music.

I'm not sure when Chris grew up, but the only KPM music I can think of that when I was a kid (60s into the early 70s) was on the later Spider-Man shows. The Capitol beds, of course, were seemingly everywhere .. not only in cartoons. You'd hear them in commercials and they'd pop up in some industrial films that we'd have to sit through in school.
Those Spider-Man beds have that processing the Brits just loved in the 60s to make the music sound bigger. I can't explain it; anyone listening to them should be able to recognise what I mean (eg. on the old The Avengers episodes).
