This year has been an historical event, first seeing a female nominee for President, and finally a female Vice Presidental running mate. Present choices aside, let's consider our two queens of animation, BETTY BOOP and OLIVE OYL as nominees. Who you you vote for?

Olive, without any hesitation. (Consider who would probably have a lock on the Secretary of Defense position in an Oyl cabinet. Now, who could Boop put forward for that ... Wiffle Piffle?) :D

Olive Oyl is a flip-flopper (Popeye or Bluto?) and is conceited.

Betty is a strong, liberated woman.

Bimbo or Koko could be her running mate.

Definitely Betty. She's proven her flexibility as a sexy, swingin' flapper girl and dedicated, hard workin' homemaker. And I betcha Grampy could find a way out of our current economic woes as well.

I like Betty Boop's views, they seem more socialist since she encourages equality between the classes.

Well, Olive says all we need is brotherly love!
That's kinda like All You Need is Love,
or Make Love Not War.
She's a fickle flip flopper. We've had enough of those.

Betty's well... sexy! More of a flapper than a flopper.
I need to know more about her.
But the current media (Lionsgate) won't give her more exposure.

Um... I'm waiting for a dark horse candidate like Broom Hilda!

Olive may have been ahead of her time in promoting "Brotherly Love." The proponants of "Same Sex Marriage" may be able to endorse this candidate.:D

Why not? Some would say there already is a "Bimbo" as a V.P. running mate, and we've already had a clown in the White House for seven years.

That was Al Smith, Democrat, four time Governor of New York, and proponant of The Empire State Building during The Depression.

Also, I'd like to point out that Olives's got no smiley on this site, unlike her opposition. A decidedly un-American and unfair situation!

Walter Mondale's running mate Geraldine Ferraro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geraldine_Ferraro) was the first female major-party nominee for Vice President, back in 1984.

Walter Mondale's running mate Geraldine Ferraro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geraldine_Ferraro) was the first female major-party nominee for Vice President, back in 1984.

Just combining the recent threads, Al Smith's top political advisor was Belle Moskowitz, the first woman to hold such a high position in government in U.S. history (much of the political programs FDR would introduce during the depression as president were formulated under Smith, his predicessor as New York's governor, and much of that came through the efforts of Moskowitz and Robert Moses. So even though she died in 1933, the New Deal was part her legacy).

On the choice of candidates here, I believe Ms. Boop's looser morals -- heck she even sings about seeing what she can do to provide voters with new kids -- would be an easy target for opposition research staffs. Ms. Oyl is fickle, but capriciouly changing positions from one side to the other has never stopped a smooth-talking politician from advancing (an example is she has all those something-for-nothing promises in her song, which seemed to anger the Republicans once she was elected, but then has that Dan Cupid arrow gun under the lectern, which obviously would earn her support from the National Rifle Association, since it shows automatic weapons can solve disputes ;)).

The platforms of Ms. Boop and Ms. Oyl were oddly similar; in fact, one might argue that the latter copied directly from the former (lol).

That being said, I don't approve at all of Ms. Oyl's Bachelor Act.or her proposal to appoint fey-looking blond male secretaries to businesswomen, so I guess I'm voting for Betty (who probably won't win because that'd mean a dog would become First Gentleman, not to mention her scandalous plan to turn every felon behind bars into a lisping queen).

A "dog" for First Gentleman? Well, we've already made the comparison about Bimbo already. Let's not forget "the clown" either. As for the "fey" aspects, it seems both candidates favor them. BETTY seems in favor of rehabilitation, or should I say "neutering" overly testosterone-driven males, while Olive is in favor of "Brotherly Love," and favors "pretty blonde" male secretaries. They both seem to have something to offer that liberal issue, now don't they?

I voted for Olive Oyl.

Olive Oyl For President is one of my family's favorite cartoons. I even recorded the soundtrack on a cassette (remember those?) for my kids when they were younger.

Plus, when the Famous Studios Olive Oyl is at her best, she is THE SEXIEST FEMALE CARTOON CHARACTER Of All TIME, in my humble opinion.

And, the Famous Studios creators often gave her good reason to dump Popeye, which negates the "bimbo" stigma attached to her.

Also, let's remember that Betty Boop and her twins/clones/doubles were members of a secret organization which carried out horrifying initiations! :)

Hmmmmm... I dunno. It's a tough choice. Let's see their campaign ads before making a decision....

"So, many people think of Betty Boop as the cutest contender since JFK, huh? Well, this footage shows us a different Betty... (Betty in her first cartoon) ...Betty Boop....a DOG! (dramatic sting, close-up on Betty image) Is that what we really need in the White House?"
"I'm Olive Oyl, and I approve this message. Oh...dearrrr!"

***************************************

"Olive Oyl mentions JFK in the latest attack ad. But let's see what her own record is regarding... EXTRAMARITAL AFFAIRS! (footage of Olive drifting from Popeye to Bluto in various cartoons) Olive Oyl. Wasn't Bill and Monica enough? (visual comparison to overweight Monica Lewinsky and Fleishers' Bluto)"
"I'm Betty Boop, and I approve this message. Giggle!"

***************************************

(Footage of Betty being persued by various letches in pre-Code cartoons)
"Look who's talking about fooling around! - in PRE-Hayes Code pictures, yet!"

*****************************************

"While Olive Oyl goes on about morals, her... lover... Popeye, is the worst around!" Bimbo: "You mean in 'Never Sock a Woman'?" "No... much worse!" (footage from the end of "Happy Birthdaze") What's so moral about... MURDER?!"
"I'm Betty Boop, and I Boop-boop-a-doop!"

**************************************

But, most shocking of all is this, from an independent candidate:

"You've seen the vicious mud-slinging between Oyl and Boop. They want you to think they're so different. HAH! They're just more of the same. Look at the record:

BOTH worked at Fleischer Studios.
BOTH were voiced by Mae Questel.
BOTH appeared - together - in Popeye's 1st theatrical cartoon.
BOTH appeared in cartoons where they, get this: BOTH RAN FOR PRESIDENT!!

The same old Toontown gang!"
"I'm Petunia Pig, and I approved this message"

That's a very furshlugginer choice, larriva9/11.

Thanks, J.J.! As for Petunia, I think, like with Popeye and Betty, Petunia will be undone by her very 1st cartoon. I know: a dream sequence - but so was Olive's run, and she's trading on it for all its worth. Plus, if both Porky and Popeye (alliterative, isn't it?) took the dreams seriously, so might voters.

Speaking of the spinach-eating sailor, he held a press conference involving the "Happy Birthdaze" controversy. He was quoted as saying, "It was just a movin' pitcher. Shorty was alive and better in our nexct 2 films, unfortkunakely", adding under his breath in a light, sing-song voice, "Besides, usin' the woid 'bitter' ain't hoit Obamica none."

But all the talk about morals in the campaign has led Betty to shed her naughty image, and even agree to someone's suggestion that she get a cute little puppy dog to win over swing-staters. However, the quality of her campaign took a big hit over that action. Says one unnamed source, "She's losing her maverick status over dat one, Doc!"

In other news, Elmer Fudd has endorsed Sarah Palin, to the surprise of no one.

Well, I think Petunia's first disastrous appearance before the cameras -- where her nervousness almost did her in -- was worse than Porky's dream sequence. Also, Petunia did chose a look-alike gangster over innocent Porky in Porky's Double Trouble. I guess she likes the bad boys. However, in her favor she might win some sympathy votes since Porky did seem to forget about her in the 40's and 50's -- leaving her to care for the psychotic Pinky all by herself.

There is some controversy (or, as Popeye puts it, "controvoisky") over Olive's cynical change of appearence in 1946 to pump up her image, with Betty noting that it took place before her original run for office. Her hairstyle, indeed, was changed to appeal to the "hepcats" - the youth vote. Also noting Olive's use of a voice coach to rid her of her whinier, Zazu Pitts quality at the same time.

There's been some dust-up over Betty's promise to stop constant catchphrasing among the cartoon populace. This especially irked the Looney Tunes people. "No 'you nasty man!', no 'I like him, he's silly'!", says spokesman Daffy Duck. "An' let me tell yuh, brother, that won't go down well with the Tex Avery contingent over at MGM, either!" Of course, as Daffy went on to brag about his affiliation with Mr. Avery at length, the media people wandered off.

"No sir, I don't like it!", added Mr. Horse.

Betty has fired back, commenting that Popeye keeping his World War II uniform on after the war was a cynical play to voters' patriotism. Even that was questioned by the Boop camp, as Betty pointed out the many times Popeye was pals with Bluto, who was supposed to be the sailor's mortal enemy. "Olive's boyfriend had been associating with a well-known terrorist", Boop said, refering to the time Bluto eliminated the entire spinach crop in 1950.

"That happened way back when most voters were only 3 and a half years old", said Oyl in her own defense.

Well, now that we're back to the journalistically ethical treatment of this serious topic, a la Jane Curtin on "Weekend Update" after defending her credibility against rogue editorialists in the '70s ;) .....

Olive's boyfriend is still causing controversy. In a major campaign stop in Kuk....amunga, Betty Boop ordered a meal before the cameras, asking facetiously for some "Pop-pie ala mode", a pointed reference to one of the one-eyed sailors more controversial outtings of his career. "The mainstream media", Boop then said, refering to TV networks airing Popeye cartoons, "has been quick to hold back information they have about the sailor's associations with severe racial stereotyping. Morals, indeed!" The Olive Oyl campaign was quick to point out, via spokesman known only as "Wimpy", that Miss Oyl was not even in that picture, adding, "Those were different times, and we fully expect a DVD release soon. We have nothing to hide."

Wimpy is known by the media covering the campaign as being notorious for mooching burgers off of press people, offering to "gladly pay them Tuesday", only to put it off.

Betty has been busy with other matters as well. She has made it a habbit to punctuate her rallies with the slogan "Frill, baby, frill!" She was soon to continue exploiting Popeye's effect on his "sweet patootie" in this campaign. She has once again sought to attack his service in wartime, often refering to it as just being a "cynical War For Oyl". Again on the defensive, Popeye answered the charge, "I was fighting to stop the orijigunnul Axisk of Evil. Whaddaya think I am, some kinda cowboy?", punctuating the comment with a series of "toot"s from his pipe. He later cited her info as coming from a group calling themselves "Blutoboat Veterans for Truth, Or A Reasonable Facsimile Thereof". She denies the charge, claiming that the info came from someone named Brutus, not Bluto. Spokesman Wimpy pointed out that Brutus was not around when Popeye served in World War II.

Ignatz: Friends and e-e-e-enemies! There is a blight in our fair society—and it is the spectre of police corruption—
Officer Pupp: Look who's talking, the insolent yinn.
Ignatz: And look who's answering... the herewith errant son of John Law who, when I am elected, will answer to a strict moral code— no more will he go by his gut! Speak loudly, I say, and carry a big brick! When I am President, better kops will catch better criminals! Oyez... oyez...
[Without explanation, Ignatz is in jail]
Ignatz: ...oy-yoyez.
Officer Pupp: A mousie in every klink, and who cares what the better kops are catching—

Well, I recall reviews you were doing on Amazon only eight years ago. But this thread is about our choices between BETTY BOOP and OLIVE OYL for President.

Well, you asked about Ignatz and he answered.

Not that I can ballot in an American election, but I should point out to voters that Ms. Oyl's too inconsistent. Oh, sure, she talks a good game, as all politicians do, promising a blond stud for every lap and such. But one minute she wants Popeye. Then Bluto. Then Shorty. Does the world really need a leader who can't make up their minds on such important military considerations like which sailor they want to go home with?

WOW!! I never thought of Olive as being such a brazen, slatternly trollop before!!!:p;)
Thank God I didn't waste my vote on her and it went instead to the ever Boopish One! :betty:

excerpt from an Olive Oyl campaign speech Oct. 28:

The election may offer a clear choice - between pre-Hayes Code values and values of strength and honor - however, we must remember the lessons of the Ignatz-Krazy race of 1932. While I have not seen any discussions on the internet about the topic (her long, thin, gangly arms make internet searching impossible, along with the incident at a typewriter attempting a manuscript about Alladin's Lamp), I do recall that election decided by a brick to the head. And while the local authorities put the mouse candidate in jail - even with the Kat ceding the election to the mouse based on the brick incident - the lesson here is that the use of force can be instrumental in running the country. There is no shame in the necessary use of spinach! (wild applause)

With that speech, Boop charged that Oyl is much better in scripted moments, citing this infamous moment in their debate the night before:

Moderator: "Miss Boop has charged that you are too slick on the stump, and not up to the job for which you seek. Many have agreed. Your response?"

Olive Oyl: "An Oyl is not slick! You - you - you - ...that's what you are!"

That, and the charge that Oyl and her buddies sold out to Famous Studios, while Boop stayed loyal to the Fleischers, has hurt Olive's campaign.

Sarah Palin is a real-life look-a-like of Petunia Pig. The difference is that Petunia doesn't roll around in feces.

If Elmer Drops dead, Petunia could become president. Scary thought. Not that Elmer would make a good one anyway..

Clearly Lil Eightball is the better choice

Bugs Bunny urged citizens to buy War Bonds, and Donald Duck reminded them to pay their taxes on time. This means they are obviously socialists! While their military service is laudable, they are far too liberal for my staunch conservative tastes.

That's why in the mayoral race I chose Yosemite Sam over Bugs Bunny. Sure, Yosemite is short tempered (as well as just plain short), has anger management issues, and of course there are those rumors of criminal activity, but his take-no-prisoners attitude is just what this country needs. :ysam:

Daffy Duck and Screwy Squirrel are obviously anarchists. Any notice how they're quite fond of explosives? The FBI should investigate their activities.

Maybe someone, somewhere, is gonna frame Sarah Palin as the political archetype of what happened to kids raised and conditioned on those execrable Saturday Morning H-B/Filmationfests in the 60s and 70s...

Your faith in Washington should stay the same, since the video in question is actually a satire by The Onion. It would be absurd to see a congressman reading into the record his confession about murdering a hobo, and his enjoyment of it, as if he were a serial killer. It's the deadpan reading by the actor that makes the piece funny to me.

Then they should join with Little Audrey and take it to the Seapreme Court.

The problem with that is that the Seapreme Court is biased in Betty's favor. All the justices are as smitten with her as all those bosses and such in her pre-Code films. The Chief Justice has already likened her to the sexiest mermaid. There is a case to be made for Olive getting a fair shake, though, since both her campaign cartoon and Audrey's were dream sequences - which also insures her the Bob Newhart vote.

ELECTION DAY NEWS - from the Passe Newsreel.....

TROUBLE AT THE BALLOT BOX: Yosemite Sam, mayoral candidate, is being put on suicide watch in case he loses. The code for going in to stop him has been revealed as, "Well, now I've seen everything!"

MORE TROUBLE: Popeye has revealed to exit pollers that he voted for Betty Boop. A frustrated Olive has been quoted as saying, "Oh, great! He's going all 'Never Sock a Woman' on me again!" Bluto is said to be preparing for her revenge.

CROSSING PARTY LINES: Although a puppet and not an animated person, the Count from "Sesame Street" has offered his services in the case of a Florida 2000 type situation. Also see quote at the top of this post.

"Politicians is da cwaziest peoples!"
